Unfamiliar calls or apps, unexpected data use, or repeated battery drain can be reasons to check your Samsung phone—but none proves that someone accessed it. Start by reviewing recent activity, app permissions and Samsung’s built-in security tools; then isolate suspicious apps and secure your accounts. Samsung’s menus and features vary by model, carrier and software version.
What signs should you check?
Samsung lists several possible warning signs of a compromised Galaxy phone. Treat them as prompts to investigate, not as confirmation of spying or access.
- Calls or messages you did not send: Check recent outgoing activity for anything you cannot explain.
- Apps you do not recognize: Look through the installed-app list, especially for recently added apps.
- Unusually high mobile data use: Check Settings > Connections > Data usage and look for unexpected usage.
- Rapid battery drain: Note whether it persists, but remember that battery drain alone does not establish that an app is monitoring you.
- Intrusive pop-up ads: Repeated pop-ups can be a reason to inspect recently installed apps.
Updates, ordinary app behavior and other device issues can also explain individual symptoms. Look for activity you cannot account for rather than relying on one symptom.
How to inspect security and app permissions
Review the Security and privacy dashboard
- Open Settings > Security and privacy.
- Review the available account security, app security, software update and permission sections.
- Open recent permission-use information and check which apps accessed sensitive features such as the camera, microphone or location.
- Open the Permissions Manager and review whether each app’s access makes sense for what it does. Revoke permissions an app does not need.
Samsung Knox documentation describes permission-use information for recent activity; Samsung says Permission Usage can cover the last 24 hours or seven days depending on the feature and device context. The precise screen and period are not identical on every Galaxy phone. These records can show app permission use, but they do not identify every person who unlocked the phone or everything that person viewed.

Run App Protection if your phone offers it
On supported devices, go to Settings > Security and privacy > App security > App protection, then run Scan phone. Samsung cautions that App Protection is not available on some models or through some carriers. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “App protection” or check support information for your exact model.
How Safe mode can help isolate an app
Safe mode disables third-party apps, which can help determine whether one of them is behind a problem. Samsung puts it plainly: “In Safe mode, your phone will not run any third-party apps.”

- Start your Galaxy phone in Safe mode. The button sequence can vary by model and software version; consult Samsung’s instructions for your device if needed.
- Use the phone in Safe mode and see whether the problem continues.
- If it stops, restart normally, open Settings > Apps, and review apps you do not recognize or recently installed.
- Uninstall an app only if you can identify it as unwanted or suspect. If the issue continues in Safe mode, the cause may not be a third-party app.
Secure access to your phone and accounts
- Check your screen lock: Use a strong PIN, password or pattern, and change it if someone else may know it.
- Review biometrics: Inspect enrolled fingerprints and face-unlock settings; remove entries you do not recognize.
- Check registered accounts: Review Samsung and Google accounts on the phone and remove any you do not recognize.
- Change account passwords safely: If you suspect someone knows your credentials, use a separate trusted device to change the relevant passwords and enable additional sign-in protection where available.
- Keep software current: Install available updates for your device.
- Use trusted app sources: Samsung recommends installing apps from Google Play or Galaxy Store.
Consider Auto Blocker
If available on your phone, find Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker and review whether to turn it on. Samsung says it can block unauthorized app sources, USB cable commands, software updates via USB cables and malware images in messaging apps. Maximum restrictions adds protections but may limit some features, so review its effects before enabling it. If the setting is missing, search Settings for “Auto Blocker”; availability depends on the device, software and market.

If the abnormal behavior continues after checking apps and settings, Samsung lists a factory data reset as a later troubleshooting step. A reset removes installed apps and data, so back up essential personal files first. Avoid restoring suspicious apps or settings afterward, or you could bring the problem back.

If the issue remains after the reset, Samsung recommends contacting a walk-in service center or scheduling an online repair. Use Samsung’s support options for your region and device.
If checking the phone could put you at risk
If you suspect a partner, family member or someone else with physical access is monitoring you, consider using a separate trusted device to change account credentials. If changing the phone or its settings could increase personal risk, seek help from a trusted local support organization before making changes. Prioritize your safety over completing a technical checklist.

What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
Samsung’s security dashboard and permission history can help you inspect app access and device security, while Safe mode can help isolate third-party apps. The reviewed Samsung guidance does not describe a complete log that identifies every person who unlocked a phone or exactly what they viewed. No single symptom or initial check identifies a person responsible for suspected access.
Settings, dashboard options and Safe mode steps can differ by Galaxy model, carrier, market and software version. If a menu path is missing, search Settings for “Security and privacy,” “App protection” or “Auto Blocker,” or consult Samsung support for your specific model.
