File read or save errors, intermittent boot problems, and a drive-health warning can be signs of SSD trouble, but none alone proves the SSD is the cause or tells you how long it will last. If the drive is still accessible, copy important files to a separate destination now; then check the exact warning and consider replacement if the drive reports a critical status.
Signs an SSD may be failing
Samsung identifies these as possible warning signs:
- Errors when reading, saving, or moving files.
- Intermittent crashes or problems during startup.
- A SMART error or other drive-health alert.
These symptoms warrant protecting your data and investigating the drive, but they are not a diagnosis. Other problems can cause similar symptoms, and the signs do not provide a reliable failure countdown. Samsung’s SSD troubleshooting guidance describes them as potential warning signs.
What an SSD health warning means
SMART is information a drive reports about its condition. A monitoring tool may use SMART attributes to show a health state or estimate remaining life, but the numbers need context: Intel says its health display is based on current SMART attributes and that remaining-life estimates depend on workload and can vary. Western Digital explains that attribute meanings and thresholds are defined by the manufacturer, so a number or status should be interpreted using guidance for the specific drive and tool.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
A critical warning is a reason to back up and consider replacement, not a universal deadline. Intel’s Memory and Storage Tool guidance says, “It is strongly recommended to back up the data and consider replacing the SSD.” ASUS says its “SMART Status BAD: Backup and Replace” warning means the drive has failed or may fail soon, and cautions that continued use may result in data loss.
What to do if you suspect SSD failure
- If the drive is readable, copy important files to a separate destination. Use another device or a separate backup location; a copy on the same failing drive is not a backup. Samsung recommends keeping important data in more than one place, and ASUS advises backing up accessible data when its SMART backup-and-replace warning appears.
- Record the exact message and where it appeared. Note the tool, status, or error text so you can check it against the guidance for your particular SSD or computer.
- Check the drive maker’s health utility and support instructions. Health information and thresholds vary by manufacturer and tool. For example, Intel’s SSD management-tool guidance explains its health indicators; Western Digital’s SMART attribute guidance discusses manufacturer-defined meanings and thresholds.
- If the tool reports a critical status, plan for replacement. Confirm the replacement fits your computer’s interface and form factor, and consult the computer or drive maker’s model-specific instructions. A warning does not establish how much time remains before failure.
If the SSD is inaccessible or files are missing
Recovery from an SSD that has actually failed can be difficult, and success is not guaranteed. Samsung names third-party recovery software and a data recovery service as possible options, but that guidance does not establish which provider is suitable or promise a result. If the inaccessible data is especially valuable, consider a recovery professional before further attempts; avoid treating any recovery route as certain.
