An SSD may be failing if files produce read or write errors, the computer repeatedly crashes while booting, SMART reports a warning, or the drive disappears from BIOS or the operating system. None of these symptoms alone proves the SSD is dead: a loose connection, unsupported configuration, or another system problem can look similar. Protect readable files first, then isolate the drive and check it with the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools.

Which symptoms can point to SSD failure?

Samsung lists these as possible warning signs: difficulty reading, saving, or moving files; intermittent crashes during boot; and SMART errors. A drive that vanishes from BIOS or the operating system is another reason to investigate, though it can also indicate a connection or compatibility problem.

  • File errors: Files may fail to open, save, or copy. File corruption and other system issues can cause similar problems.
  • Repeated boot crashes: Intermittent failures during startup may involve the SSD, but they are not conclusive on their own.
  • SMART warnings: Treat a warning as a reason to protect data and investigate. SMART attributes and their interpretation vary by manufacturer and model; a single status or percentage cannot establish that every SSD is healthy.
  • Missing drive: If the SSD is absent from BIOS, check the connection and host support before concluding that the drive has failed.

These are clues, not a guarantee that a drive is failing or that a failure will give advance warning. Samsung’s SSD guidance describes possible warnings and emphasizes safeguarding data.

What should you do before troubleshooting?

If the SSD is still readable, copy your most important files to a different device or storage location before attempting repairs, updates, or other changes. A backup is more important than determining the exact cause immediately. Samsung advises keeping important data in more than one place and cautions that recovering data after an SSD has actually failed can be difficult.

How to diagnose an SSD that is missing from BIOS

A BIOS detection problem can come from the SSD, its connection, or the computer’s supported configuration. Intel’s BIOS troubleshooting guidance recommends checking drive support and connections, and comparing the drive with other compatible hardware. Intel last reviewed that article on November 7, 2022.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the computer or motherboard documentation for supported SSD form factors, interfaces, and ports. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not, by itself, identify the drive’s protocol or guarantee compatibility.
  2. Check the connection. For a SATA SSD, verify the data cable, power connection, and motherboard port. For an M.2 drive, confirm it is seated correctly and installed in a supported slot. Inspect connectors and the drive for visible damage.
  3. Try another supported connection. If available, use a known-good compatible cable or another supported port. Follow the computer or motherboard maker’s installation instructions.
  4. Test the SSD in another compatible system. If it is detected there, the original computer’s connection, configuration, or support may be the cause.
  5. Test another compatible SSD in the original computer. If that drive also fails to appear, investigate the system, slot, port, or configuration rather than assuming the original SSD is dead.

If the SSD remains undetected after these checks, contact the computer or system manufacturer for model-specific support.

How to check SSD health with a manufacturer tool

Use the drive maker’s current health utility and instructions for the specific model. For Samsung SSDs, Samsung recommends Magician to check drive health and SMART status; a diagnostic scan is available on certain models. SanDisk’s guidance also discusses checking remaining life or endurance, while noting that the details shown depend on the SSD. Do not assume every brand or model reports the same attributes or offers the same tests.

Read the result conservatively. A SMART warning or failed manufacturer test is a serious reason to back up what remains readable and plan next steps. Seagate’s support guidance says a test-generated error means the drive needs replacement; follow the instructions for your own drive model rather than applying one manufacturer’s result rules to every SSD. Conversely, a tool that reports no warning does not prove that the drive cannot fail.

When should you replace the SSD?

Replacement becomes reasonable when the manufacturer’s diagnostic reports a failure, SMART raises a warning, or drive-specific problems persist after you have ruled out the connection and host configuration. Before buying a replacement, check the computer’s supported interface, form factor, capacity, and installation requirements. A physically fitting drive is not necessarily compatible.

If files on the suspect drive matter and are not backed up, decide whether to pursue recovery before replacing or attempting further repairs. Samsung cautions that recovery after actual SSD failure can be difficult; no recovery outcome is guaranteed.
