To judge whether an October Prime Day deal is genuinely good, compare the exact item’s current checkout price with its own recent price history and the price for the same item elsewhere. A large discount badge, crossed-out price, or countdown does not establish that the offer is unusually cheap.

Amazon’s U.S. Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6–7, 2026, and have ended. The guidance below applies to checking October sale offers generally; event dates and availability can differ by country.

Start with the item’s price history

On an eligible Amazon product page, open Price History and compare the current price with the graph, paying particular attention to the weeks before the event as well as the longer trend. Amazon says eligible listings can show up to 365 days of history. Its seller guidance describes the graph as showing each day’s lowest Featured Offer price, which helps put the current price in context but is not necessarily the price every shopper paid.

A current offer near the product’s ordinary recent range is less compelling than one clearly below that range. A brief dip before the event can also change how impressive a sale looks: compare against the actual history, not just the highest point on the graph.

Amazon’s 2026 event guide describes the Price History feature. Amazon Seller Central’s reference-pricing guidance explains the daily Featured Offer measure.

Check that the comparison is truly like for like

Search other retailers for the same product and verify the model number, size, color, bundle, and condition. A price for a different configuration or a refurbished item is not a direct comparison. Check the seller as well: two listings for the same model can differ in seller and condition.

Compare the price you would actually pay at checkout, including shipping and any coupon that applies to you. Also note whether an offer requires Prime membership or another paid service. Those details can change the effective cost, and the final checkout total depends on the particular listing and shopper.

Understand what the crossed-out price means

Amazon distinguishes between a List Price and a Typical Price. In Amazon’s explanation, List Price is a suggested retail price validated against market evidence. Typical Price, also called Was Price, is based on prices customers recently paid on Amazon. A discount may be calculated against one of these reference prices; neither figure, on its own, tells you whether today’s offer is the product’s best price.

Amazon Seller Central’s 2026 guidance says a List Price can be validated when another retailer recently offered the product at that price or when it was purchased on Amazon as the Featured Offer at that price. The guidance describes Typical Price as based on the 90-day median non-promotional price. It also says that from May 18, 2026, if more than half of the 90-day history is below that non-promotional median, Typical Price uses all sales, including promotional sales. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its own reference-pricing rules, not independent confirmation that an offer beats other retailers or the item’s year-long low.

Amazon says it works to offer a 30-day low, but its reference-price explanations are still not a substitute for checking the item’s actual history and current alternatives. See Amazon’s explanation of its deal pricing and the 2026 Seller Central guidance.

Use price trackers as cross-checks, not verdicts

For a purchase where the exact historical low matters, compare Amazon’s graph with another price-history source. WIRED names Keepa and CamelCamelCamel as examples, while warning that third-party records can miss some deals and may not always be reliable. A difference between records is a reason to treat the precise historical low cautiously, not proof that one source is correct.

Separate sale urgency from value

Amazon’s U.S. event page described a 48-hour sale and scheduled new Today’s Big Deals at midnight, 8 a.m., and 1 p.m. PDT, while supplies lasted. The page also warned, “All deals and availability are subject to change.” These mechanics explain why listings may use countdowns or show changing availability; they do not establish that a particular price is unusually low. Dates and sale mechanics can vary outside the U.S.

Amazon reported that more than 80% of deals during the “most recent Prime Day” were at Amazon’s lowest price of the year so far. That is Amazon’s own claim, not an independent audit of October 2026 Prime Big Deal Days or evidence about any one listing. Amazon also reported that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history tool; that figure measures reported feature use, not accuracy or savings. Both figures appear in Amazon’s guide to checking deal prices.

Make the buy-or-wait decision

Before you purchase, use this short comparison for the exact item:

Check What to verify
Checkout cost Current price after applicable coupons, plus shipping and any membership requirement.
Price history Current price against recent weeks and the longer history available for the listing.
Other sellers and retailers The same model and configuration, with condition and seller accounted for.
Reference price Whether the discount is based on List Price or Typical/Was Price; do not treat the crossed-out value as proof of a low.

Set a target price based on what the item has recently cost and what comparable sellers charge. Amazon offers price alerts and target-price features; if the current offer misses your target and you do not need the item now, waiting is a reasonable choice. A deadline is a cue to check availability, not a reason by itself to buy.
