Start with the AI provider’s official status page and check the specific product or component you use. Then compare the service in another session, browser, device, or network—changing one thing at a time. A matching incident makes a provider problem more likely; a successful comparison points toward the original setup or route. Neither result is proof on its own.
1. Check the official status page
Open the provider’s status page directly and look for the affected product or component, not just the page-wide summary. Check the incident history too: a recently resolved incident may explain a problem that has stopped or is improving. OpenAI’s status page lists components and notes that its availability metrics are aggregated across tiers, models, and error types, so an individual customer’s experience can differ. OpenAI Status
A green status page is a useful clue, not a guarantee that every region, account, model, or feature is working. A narrow or localized problem may not be apparent in an overall status summary. Status pages and incident histories also vary by provider; use the official page for the service you are troubleshooting rather than assuming every provider reports the same detail.

At the time it was accessed on October 3, 2026, the OpenAI Status page said, “We’re fully operational” and “We’re not aware of any issues affecting our systems.” That wording is a time-sensitive snapshot, not a promise of uninterrupted availability.

2. Check whether the problem follows the session, account, or model
Make one change at a time so you can see what affects the result. First refresh once, sign out and back in, and try starting a new conversation. If the service offers multiple models, try another model. OpenAI’s ChatGPT troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks to help distinguish a conversation- or model-specific problem from a broader one. ChatGPT error troubleshooting
If a new chat works, the fault may be tied to the earlier conversation; if another model works, it may be model-specific. These outcomes narrow the possibilities but do not establish that the provider is otherwise healthy. If the same failure follows your account, continue testing the browser, device, and network.

3. Compare browsers and devices
Try a private or incognito window with extensions disabled. If that works, test a different browser on the same device. Then, if available, test another device. These comparisons help isolate browser-profile issues, extensions, stored site data, or device-specific constraints.

4. Compare networks
Try the same device and account on another network, such as mobile data, if available. If the service works there, the original route becomes more suspect: a VPN, proxy, firewall, company network policy, or other network change could be involved. That result does not identify which component is responsible. If you are on a work or school network, ask its administrator about relevant access policies.
For API users, check client timeouts, proxy or load-balancer changes, and HTTP status and error rates. OpenAI’s API guidance says that client-side errors without matching records in Service Health commonly indicate that requests did not reach OpenAI, for example because of an upstream timeout, proxy, or networking problem. 5. Interpret the pattern without overclaiming

If the problem persists, record the details before contacting the provider. Include the exact error and when it occurred, with the time zone, as well as the affected product, model, or API endpoint. Note the browser or app version, account or tier where relevant, and which alternate browser, device, or network tests succeeded or failed.

For API issues, include request IDs when available, the relevant endpoint and model, the time range, and error details or rates. OpenAI’s API guidance requests this information. For persistent blank, frozen, or stuck ChatGPT sessions, its consumer guidance suggests that a HAR file and browser-console errors can help support investigate. How the same checks apply to Claude and other AI services
Use the same basic sequence for Claude or another AI service: check its official status page, then compare session, browser, device, and network conditions. Anthropic’s official status-history page links to current status, uptime, and support, but the detail providers expose differs, so do not expect identical component lists, incident history, regional reporting, or troubleshooting steps.
