HDMI ports are usually wide, shallow sockets with a slight trapezoid shape; USB-A ports are rectangular, and USB-C ports are smaller, rounded ovals. If the shape is unclear, check the label and the port diagram in the manual for your exact laptop or TV. A USB-C port may carry video, but its shape alone does not tell you whether it does.

How to recognize HDMI, USB-A, and USB-C

Port What the opening looks like What to check
HDMI Relatively wide and shallow, with a slightly tapered outline; often marked “HDMI.” Confirm the port in the device’s manual or port diagram. TVs often place numbered HDMI inputs on a side or rear panel.
USB Type-A Larger rectangular opening, often marked with the USB trident symbol or USB wording. Do not identify it by color: USB-A ports can be black, blue, or another color.
USB Type-C Small rounded oval opening; the plug can be inserted either way up. Check the model’s specifications to learn whether it supports data, charging, video, or some combination.

Manufacturers document HDMI and USB as separate ports. For example, see HP’s computer port guide and ASUS’s laptop port guide. When a socket is hard to see, compare it with the diagram for your exact model instead of trying connectors until one fits.

Does USB-C mean HDMI or video output?

No. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed feature set. A USB-C port can support data transfer and charging, and some models also support video output; other USB-C ports do not. MSI explains that USB-C functions vary by laptop model and advises checking the exact model’s specifications in its USB Type-C port guidance. ASUS likewise directs users to the product specifications or manual to verify display support in its USB-C display FAQ.

Look in the laptop’s official specifications or manual for an explicit video capability, such as DisplayPort output or Thunderbolt. Logos near the port can be clues, but the model documentation is the confirmation. If video output is supported, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable can connect the laptop to an HDMI display.

Choose the right connection for your setup

Laptop HDMI to TV HDMI

For the usual laptop-to-TV connection, run an HDMI cable from the laptop’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. Select the corresponding numbered HDMI input on the TV. Check both devices’ specifications and match the cable to the resolution, refresh rate, and features you need; there is no single cable specification established for every setup.

Laptop USB-C to TV HDMI

Use this path only if the laptop’s exact USB-C port supports video output. Then choose an adapter or cable compatible with the laptop and TV, including the resolution and refresh rate you need and any required HDR or audio features. USB-C ports vary by model, so a connector that fits does not guarantee a working display connection.

Console or camera HDMI to a computer

A laptop’s HDMI port is typically an output for sending its picture to a TV or monitor, not an input for receiving a console’s picture. To bring an HDMI source into a computer for viewing or recording, use an HDMI capture device that accepts the source and connects to the computer, commonly over USB. Check the capture device’s supported formats and content-protection limits. Lenovo explains the distinction between HDMI input and USB-C video connections.

Check before buying an adapter or cable

  • For HDMI-to-HDMI: Confirm that the laptop has HDMI output and the TV has an HDMI input, then select the TV’s matching input.
  • For USB-C-to-HDMI: Verify video output on the laptop’s exact USB-C port in its official specifications or manual. Compare the adapter’s supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio features with your needs.
  • For HDMI capture: Choose capture hardware for an HDMI source entering a computer, and check its input formats and protected-content handling.
  • Avoid vague “USB-to-HDMI” listings: USB-A, video-capable USB-C, and HDMI have different capabilities and signal directions. Confirm the specific port and connection path before buying.
