Look for the Sponsored label to identify a Google Shopping ad. A product card’s photo, price, rating, sale badge, or position on the Shopping tab does not by itself tell you whether it is paid. Google can show ads and eligible free product listings on the same surface, and their layouts vary.
Why Google Shopping results look different
Google Shopping ads are paid product placements managed through Google Ads and built from a retailer’s product information in Merchant Center. An ad can show a product photo, title, price, store name, and other details. Google’s overview of Shopping ads describes the format.
Free product listings are eligible product results that can appear without a merchant paying for that placement. Google says they may appear across Search, the Shopping tab, Maps, Images, Lens, YouTube, Gemini, and other surfaces; eligibility does not guarantee that a listing will appear. The Shopping tab can include both free listings and ad placements, so being on that tab is not proof that a result is an ad. Google’s free listings documentation explains where they may show.
Ads and free listings can use similar product-card designs because both present product information. Placement and grouping can also change by surface, device, country, and over time. For that reason, do not try to identify paid placement from card design alone.
What the “Sponsored” label means
Google’s clearest shopper-facing cue is the Sponsored label. In an October 13, 2025 announcement, Google Ads VP of Product Management and Data Science Omkar Muralidharan said: “The new ‘Sponsored’ label also applies to other ad units on the search results page, like Shopping ads.” Google’s announcement identifies the label and its application to Shopping ads.
Check the label on the result you are viewing. Do not infer that a product is paid because it appears in a prominent position, next to other ads, or in a particular-looking card; the layout and grouping can differ.

How to read other product-card labels
Labels and annotations such as sale prices, original prices, promotions, shipping details, and ratings describe the offer or product. They are not, on their own, proof that the placement is an ad. Google says it selects annotations and badges dynamically based on relevance, and they may not appear on every product. Availability can depend on device, surface, and country. Google’s product-data guidance on annotations describes these variations.
Sale prices and badges
A sale-price annotation may show the current price alongside the original price and include a sale badge when applicable requirements are met. Requirements vary by country and listing type, so a sale badge is not a universal paid-ad marker. Google’s guidance on product annotations covers sale-price display.

Price, shipping, promotion, and rating details
Read these as information to help assess an offer or product, not as disclosures about who paid for placement. A result can have detailed offer information whether it is an ad or a free listing; use the Sponsored label to determine paid status.

- Look for “Sponsored” on the result. If it is present, Google identifies the placement as sponsored advertising.
- Separate the surface from the status. A result on Search, the Shopping tab, or another Google property is not automatically paid; those surfaces may show free listings as well as ads.
- Read product annotations separately. Sale, price, shipping, promotion, and rating details tell you about the offer or product, not whether the merchant paid for the placement.
Why the distinction matters to shoppers and merchants
As a shopper, the visible Sponsored label is more useful than guessing from a product card’s appearance. As a separate merchant-side distinction, Google reports free-listing traffic as organic in Merchant Center, while Shopping ad traffic can be measured through Google Ads. That reporting classification helps explain the difference, but it is not a substitute for checking the label on a shopper-facing result.
