Look for an explicit Sponsored label and a separate ad unit below the end of ChatGPT’s response. OpenAI says ads are visually distinct from answers. Treat the label and placement as the key clues—not as evidence that the answer above was written or ranked by an advertiser.

How to identify a ChatGPT ad

  1. Check for the Sponsored label. OpenAI says ads are clearly labeled as sponsored.
  2. Check where it appears. OpenAI describes ads as appearing below a response, in a unit visually separated from that response.
  3. Look for ad-specific content. The advertiser-facing description says an ad unit can include an advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, landing page, and image asset. These elements belong to the placement, not to ChatGPT’s answer.

OpenAI’s Help Center says, “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” OpenAI also says ads run on systems separate from the chat model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. These are OpenAI’s stated policies, not the result of an independent audit or user study measuring how reliably people recognize ads.

Does a relevant ad mean it influenced the answer?

No. Relevance alone does not show that an advertiser influenced the response. OpenAI says current conversation context and intent may help select ads. When ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may also be used. Ad selection and answer generation are distinct according to OpenAI’s description.

An ad is also not an endorsement. OpenAI’s Help Center says: “Ads are paid placements, and seeing an ad doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser or its products or services.” Evaluate a product or service on its own merits rather than treating its appearance beside a response as ChatGPT’s recommendation.

What to do with an ad in ChatGPT

Learn why it appeared, hide it, or report it

When available, open the ad’s menu and choose About this ad or the option explaining why you are seeing it. Choose Hide ad to dismiss a placement. Use Report ad if it seems misleading, unsafe, inappropriate, or otherwise policy-violating.

Change ad personalization

For eligible Free and Go users in regions where the controls are available or expected soon, OpenAI lists the path as Settings > Ad Controls. Turning personalization off does not remove ads: OpenAI says ads may still be selected using the current chat thread, while signals from other threads, ad history, and topics are excluded from selection. Ad controls and availability can vary by region and may change.

Consider the available ad-free options

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads. It also describes an Ads-Free option on the Free plan, with reduced message limits and feature access, and says Plus and Pro are ad-free. Check the current plan and settings screens for availability and terms before choosing; these details can change.

Who may see ads, and what advertisers receive

According to OpenAI, Free and Go users may see ads, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not. OpenAI also says accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 do not see ads. The test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, with gradual expansion to selected regions; rollout and eligibility are time-sensitive, so the experience may differ by location and account.

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, or personal details. It says advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as views or clicks. If you send a message directly to an advertiser through an ad, OpenAI says that advertiser can see the message you send. This describes the information OpenAI says advertisers receive; it is not a broader statement about all of OpenAI’s data processing.

Quick distinction

What you see How to read it
ChatGPT response The answer generated in the conversation; OpenAI says ads do not influence it.
Sponsored unit below the response A paid placement, labeled and visually separated according to OpenAI.
Product mentioned in the response and a related ad nearby Proximity or relevance does not establish that the ad shaped the answer or that OpenAI recommends the product.

OpenAI’s public help material describes the labeling and separation, but does not provide an independent recognition study or a statistic showing how often readers distinguish an ad from an answer.
