Start with body shape, then check for a head, feeding tentacles, gills, and tube feet. A sea cucumber is usually an elongated, soft-bodied echinoderm; a sea star has a central body with radiating arms; and a sea slug is a gastropod mollusk, often with a distinct head and sensory tentacles. Color alone is not a dependable identifier.
Compare the body shape first
| Animal | Animal group | Typical body plan | Structures to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea cucumber | Echinoderm | Elongated, usually cylindrical body with soft or leathery skin | Feeding tentacles around the mouth; small tube feet may run along the body |
| Sea slug | Gastropod mollusk | Variable, often with a recognizable head and slug-like outline | Sensory tentacles; some species, especially nudibranchs, have exposed back gills |
| Sea star | Echinoderm | Central body with radiating arms | Tube feet on the underside |
These are broad group-level clues, not a key for identifying a species. Sea cucumbers and sea slugs can both look soft-bodied, so softness by itself is less useful than their overall shape and visible anatomy. NOAA describes sea cucumbers as echinoderms with tube feet and feeding structures (NOAA Ocean Service); sea stars are also echinoderms (NOAA Ocean Service).
Check for a head and sensory tentacles
A distinct head with sensory tentacles points toward a sea slug. In nudibranchs, those sensory structures are called rhinophores. A sea cucumber does not have a slug-like head; instead, its mouth is surrounded by feeding tentacles. That difference matters when looking at the animal’s front end: tentacles around the mouth of a cucumber serve a different role from the sensory tentacles of a slug. The University of Hawaiʻi Waikīkī Aquarium also recommends looking for a head as a simple field clue (Waikīkī Aquarium).
Look at the back and underside
Back gills suggest some sea slugs
Some sea slugs, particularly nudibranchs, have exposed gills that can look feathery on the back. Not every sea slug has the same visible features, so use this clue alongside body shape and sensory tentacles rather than treating it as a requirement. Ocean Conservancy describes the variety of sea slugs and their distinguishing structures (Ocean Conservancy).

Tube feet occur in different places
Sea cucumbers and sea stars both have tube feet, a feature of echinoderms, but their arrangement differs. A sea cucumber’s small feet may be distributed along its body and can be hard to make out in a photograph. A sea star’s tube feet are on its underside. If you cannot see the underside, the star’s central body and radiating arms are usually the more obvious clue. NOAA explains the sea star’s tube feet and water-vascular system (NOAA Ocean Service).
Use color and texture only as supporting clues
Sea cucumbers can have soft, leathery skin and may show projections or papillae, while sea slugs vary widely in appearance and can be vividly colored. Those traits can help describe an animal, but they do not separate the groups reliably on their own. Give more weight to body plan and structures: arms for a sea star, a long body with mouth-end feeding tentacles for a sea cucumber, or a distinct head with sensory structures for a sea slug.

Make a careful identification from a sighting
- Look at the outline. A central body with radiating arms indicates a sea star; an elongated cylinder suggests a sea cucumber; a more recognizable head and slug-like form suggests a sea slug.
- Check the front end. Feeding tentacles surrounding the mouth fit a sea cucumber. A distinct head with sensory tentacles fits a sea slug.
- Check the back and underside if visible. Exposed feathery gills can support a nudibranch identification, while underside tube feet support a sea-star identification.
- Keep the conclusion at group level unless you have more evidence. A clear photograph and the animal’s location can help with species identification; use a regional guide or ask a local marine-life expert if the exact species matters.
Do not handle or remove an animal to inspect it. Visible features and photographs are enough for this basic comparison.
