Before correcting a family member’s political post, verify the specific claim and decide whether a response will help. Then ask where they heard it, share relevant evidence without embarrassment or accusation, and pause if the exchange turns hostile or repetitive. The aim can be to reduce harm and keep a channel open—not to win a debate or change someone’s mind on the spot.
1. Verify the exact claim before you respond
Start with what your relative actually said, rather than what you suspect they meant. Check the original source, its date and context, and whether credible independent reporting or a reputable fact-check addresses the same claim. PEN America cautions that suspecting content is false is not the same as confirming it: its guide to talking with friends and family who share misinformation recommends checking before correcting.
For a claim about election rules or local procedures, check the relevant official election authority. Keep your conclusion narrow: a fact-check of one detail does not automatically settle a broader political argument.

Consider what you hope to accomplish: correcting information that could harm others, understanding your relative’s concern, or preserving a relationship in which you can talk again. The best channel depends on the post’s reach, its potential harm, and whether a reply is likely to help or amplify it.

| Situation | Possible response | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| A recent post with a small audience | Send a polite private message. | It may spare your relative public embarrassment, but fewer bystanders will see the correction. |
| A false claim already reaching many people | Consider a public correction with a credible source. | It may help bystanders, but replying can also draw more attention to the original claim. |
| You are unsure what the person means or wants | Ask a question before deciding whether to correct. | You may learn what matters to them; the question alone does not resolve the claim. |
This public-versus-private choice follows PEN America’s guidance; it is a judgment call, not a guaranteed way to change minds.
3. Begin with a question, not an accusation
A simple opener is: “Do you mind telling me where you heard that?” TIME’s expert-informed advice on responding to political misinformation recommends asking about the source and the concern behind the claim. You might also ask, “What worries you most about it?” or “Would it be OK if I looked into this and shared what I find? Maybe we can compare notes.”

These are examples, not experimentally proven scripts. Use your own voice, listen to the answer, and avoid treating a question as a setup for a lecture. As counseling psychology professor Tania Israel told TIME, asking about a claim can be a way to explore “the meaning and the concerns that underlie the grip that misinformation has on them.”

When you have checked the claim, offer a source that addresses it directly. Explain what the source establishes and what it does not establish. If your relative is open to it, compare the sources and their evidence together rather than demanding that they accept your conclusion.

A low-pressure introduction could be: “I was curious about the thing you posted, so I looked into it. Here’s what I found.” PEN America also suggests acknowledging a time you shared something false, if that is genuine. That can make room for correction without implying that only the other person is capable of being mistaken. Avoid mocking a source or calling your relative foolish or malicious; TIME’s expert interviews warn that insults can close the discussion.
5. Recognize when facts alone may not be enough
Political beliefs can be connected to identity, values, relationships, and a wider view of the world. The UK Government Communication Service’s Wall of Beliefs framework explains why simply supplying accurate information may not overturn a deeply held belief, and why direct challenges can sometimes provoke psychological reactance. It is a planning framework, not a formula that guarantees a productive family conversation.

- A BOLD NEW GAME FROM WE'RE NOT REALLY STRANGERS — with 150 ‘would you rather’ questions that you didn't know you needed to ask. Reveal sides of your friends, your partner, and yourself that you've never seen before.
- THREE CATEGORIES - Use the spinner to let fate decide which deck you pull a card from. Land on LIFE for the big questions, LOVE for relationship dilemmas, or for the answers nobody saw coming. With each conversation starter card, the conversations are guaranteed to go places you didn't expect.
- NO EASY ANSWERS - These questions might feel impossible to answer, and that is by design. Watching other players struggle to choose is half the fun, and the other half is learning more about them, whether you use it as a conversation card couple activity or with a whole group, based on their answers.
- THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE - Don't overthink it. Your first instinct is the most honest one. This game works best when you stop second-guessing and start saying how you really feel for a fun party game or a relationship card game.
- WHAT’S INSIDE - 150 unique ‘would you rather’ question cards divided into three categories, and 1 spinner.
Family dynamics matter, too. A UCL-hosted qualitative study of UK family members who had encountered misinformation in their networks identifies personality and preconceptions as barriers to discussing and challenging it. Its interviews illuminate reported experiences; they do not establish that any one approach causes belief change. A 2023 Communication Studies article’s available abstract reports that family conversation and conformity orientations positively predicted intention to correct misinformation shared by a family member, while a history of family conflict was negatively related to that intent. The abstract does not establish causation or provide grounds for a more specific prediction about your family.
6. Pause before the exchange becomes a fight
Watch for signs the conversation has stopped helping: the same points are cycling, either person feels attacked, or defensiveness is replacing curiosity. Suggest returning to it later, or leave a credible fact-checking resource for the person to read independently. PEN America advises against escalating and notes that continued pressure may make someone more resistant. You do not have to force agreement to make a useful choice about how you respond.

What survey data can—and cannot—say about family conversations
A Pew Research Center survey conducted November 7–13, 2018, found that 59% of U.S. adults said their family was OK with talking about politics, while 40% said they tried to avoid the subject. Comfort varied with perceived political agreement: 82% of people who said almost everyone in their family shared their views were OK discussing politics, compared with 28% of those who said almost no one did. These are dated U.S. survey results, not a current estimate or a forecast about any particular family. Pew’s 2018 report provides the full context.
