Tell your clinician what you have noticed, when it began, whether it is changing, and how it affects pain, erections, or sex. A primary-care clinician or urologist can begin the evaluation; treatment is not automatic, and observation may be reasonable for some people. Use your appointment to understand what the findings mean, what choices fit your priorities, and what should prompt follow-up.
What to prepare before the appointment
A short timeline is often more useful than trying to arrive with a diagnosis or a precisely measured curve. Write down what changed and when, including details that may feel personal: they can affect evaluation and treatment decisions.
- When you first noticed a curve, lump, or other change, and whether it has changed since.
- Whether you have pain during an erection or at other times, and whether the pain is changing.
- Any change in penile shape or length. Note the direction of the curve and its approximate degree only if you already know it; you do not need to measure it.
- Whether erections are difficult to get or maintain, and whether the curve or other symptoms make sex or penetration difficult or impossible.
- Any relevant injury, health conditions, medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
- Family history of Peyronie’s disease or related conditions, if known.
Consider writing your questions down. You may bring a partner for support if you want to and privacy allows, but you can also ask to speak with the clinician alone.

If you are comfortable and it is safe, ask the clinic whether erection photographs would help and how to take or securely share them. A urologist may request photographs to assess curvature at follow-up, according to NIDDK’s patient information. You do not have to provide images simply because you have symptoms.

How clinicians evaluate a penile curve or lump
Evaluation commonly starts with your medical and sexual history and a physical examination. The clinician may ask when symptoms began, whether there is pain, how the shape has changed, and whether erections or intercourse are affected. A urologist may feel a plaque—a firm area of scar tissue—when the penis is not erect.
The European Association of Urology (EAU) guideline also describes assessing plaque, length, curvature, erectile function, and associated conditions. Depending on the question, curvature may be assessed using photographs, a vacuum-assisted erection test, or a medication-induced erection examination.
When imaging may help
Imaging is usually not needed just to diagnose Peyronie’s disease, though it may provide additional information. An ultrasound or Doppler ultrasound can be considered when the clinician needs to assess plaque or blood flow, including in some evaluations of erectile dysfunction or before an intervention. The EAU cautions that ultrasound measurement of plaque size is operator-dependent and inaccurate, so a scan should not be treated as a definitive measure of disease severity.

Useful questions include: “What examination or tests do you recommend, and what will each one tell us?” and “What do you think is causing the curve or lump, and what else could explain my symptoms?”
Discuss what matters most to you
Be direct about effects on pain, erections, sex, confidence, and relationships. Difficulty with penetration or avoiding sex because of symptoms is relevant medical information, not an embarrassing detail to leave out. Tell the clinician which outcomes matter most to you—for example, reducing pain, improving the ability to have sex, addressing erectile difficulty, or limiting further change.
The EAU guideline cites studies reporting erectile dysfunction in 30–70.6% of patients with Peyronie’s disease. That wide range is not a prediction of any one person’s risk; your own erectile function and health need individual assessment.

Understand the choices without assuming treatment is required
Treatment depends on symptoms, curvature, function, whether the condition is changing or stable, erectile function, general health, and your preferences. Observation can be reasonable for some people. Depending on the situation, a clinician may discuss options aimed at pain, curvature, or erectile function, including medicines, injections, other therapies, or surgery. The evidence and suitability of approaches vary, and treatment access and regulatory status can differ by country.

The AUA guideline advises clinicians to discuss available treatments and their known benefits and risks or burdens. For each option your clinician raises, ask about:
- The goal and realistic degree of improvement, including uncertainty and limitations.
- Risks and possible effects on penile length or erectile function.
- Time, visits, daily effort, recovery, and follow-up.
- Cost, insurance coverage, and local availability.
- Alternatives, including observation, and how the choice fits your priorities.
Ask how the clinician defines stable disease in your case and what changes should lead you to contact the clinic sooner. There is no reliable single figure in the cited patient and guideline material that predicts whether an individual’s symptoms will worsen or improve.

If traction therapy comes up
Penile traction is a mechanical device-based therapy to discuss with a clinician, not a one-size-fits-all solution. Mayo Clinic notes that wearing schedules vary substantially by device; the cited guidance describes daily use ranging from 30 minutes to 3–8 hours. Ask whether it fits your situation, which device and schedule the clinician recommends, what evidence and precautions apply, and how progress would be assessed. Do not assume a device will restore normal anatomy or that one device is best for everyone.
When surgery may be considered
Surgery is not an early default. The EAU recommends offering it only when disease is stable and the deformity compromises intercourse. Before considering surgery, the clinician should assess penile length, curvature severity, erectile function—including response to medication when relevant—and your expectations. Ask when surgery might be appropriate for you and how different procedures could affect those factors.
Options may improve curvature, discomfort, or function, but no treatment can guarantee a return to exactly the way the penis was before the disease. The British Association of Urological Surgeons’ March 2025 patient leaflet describes those possible improvements while noting that limitation.

Questions to take into the room
- “Does this appear to be changing or stable, and how will we track that?”
- “How are pain, erection problems, and difficulty with sex affecting the treatment plan?”
- “What are my reasonable choices, including observation? What benefit, risk, time, cost, and effort come with each?”
- “If you recommend a treatment, what improvement is realistic and when would we assess it?”
- “Would traction therapy make sense in my situation? Which device and schedule would you recommend, and what evidence or precautions apply?”
- “When would surgery be considered, and what factors make one procedure more suitable than another?”
- “What should make me contact you sooner, and when should I follow up?”
- “Can you recommend reliable patient information or a specialist if I want another opinion?”
Mayo Clinic’s appointment-preparation page, updated August 6, 2025, suggests asking: “What tests will I need?”; “What treatment do you recommend?”; “Can you tell if my symptoms are likely to become worse or get better?”; and “Are there any brochures or other printed material that I can take home with me? What websites do you recommend?”
After the visit
Before you leave, make sure you understand the next step, when to follow up, and which changes merit an earlier call. If you are unsure about a recommendation, ask the clinician to explain the trade-offs again or whether a urologist with experience in male sexual medicine would be appropriate. You can start the conversation with a primary-care clinician or urologist; a specialist referral is not a prerequisite to asking for an initial evaluation.
Avoid self-diagnosing, self-prescribing pain medicines, or relying on unverified supplements or home treatments. Bring questions about anything you are considering to the clinician, particularly because treatments and their regulatory status can vary by jurisdiction.
