Tell a child plainly that someone died, answer questions with simple, truthful language, and let the child decide how much to talk or take part. Before a funeral or memorial, explain what will happen and offer choices—including attending only part of it or not going. Children can remember someone in many ways, and they may need support again as they grow.
How to tell a child someone has died
Use direct words such as “died” and “death.” Euphemisms like “went to sleep” or “we lost him” can leave children unsure what happened or afraid that sleep itself is dangerous. Explain the cause simply and truthfully, with detail suited to the child’s age and questions. The National Cancer Institute recommends telling children the truth “with as much detail as he or she is able to understand.”
You might begin: “I have something sad to tell you. Grandma died. Her body stopped working, and she can’t come back. I’m here with you. What questions do you have?” Change the example to fit what actually happened. If your family has religious or spiritual beliefs, you can share them as beliefs while also explaining plainly what happened to the person’s body.
After sharing the news, pause. Listen, answer what the child asks, and say when you do not know. Children may ask the same question again as their understanding changes. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that asking about the death does not cause the grief: “it is the death itself, and not the question, that is the cause of the distress.” Avoid minimizing worries, telling a child how they should feel, or making the conversation a request for them to comfort you.

Offer accurate reassurance about care and safety. A child may wonder whether another loved one will die or who will look after them. Say who will care for them and what you know; do not promise that nothing bad can ever happen.
Adapt the conversation to the child
Age can offer a starting point, but children develop differently and family circumstances matter. The National Alliance for Children’s Grief (NACG) advises using simple, repeated answers for younger children and keeping the conversation open as understanding develops.

| Age range | Helpful approach |
|---|---|
| 2–5 | Use short, concrete explanations and be ready to repeat them. Avoid language that could make death sound temporary or like sleep. |
| 6–8 | Explain directly and give the child room to ask questions. Check what they understood rather than assuming. |
| 8–12 | Acknowledge feelings, offer reassurance, and answer questions honestly. Invite the child to say what is worrying them. |
| Teens | Be open and nonjudgmental while respecting privacy. Listen without rushing to fix their feelings. |
These are broad prompts, not rules. A child may move between wanting details and wanting space, or return to earlier questions later. Culture and family traditions also shape how people talk about death and remember someone; explain your family’s practices without suggesting every family observes them.

Should a child attend a funeral or memorial?
There is no single right answer. Invite the child and explain the options, but do not force attendance or participation. Some children want to be present; others prefer a different way to say goodbye. The AAP’s clinical report cautions that children excluded from memorial services may resent missing a meaningful activity involving someone they love, and recommends inviting participation to the extent the child wishes.

Preparation helps the child make an informed choice. Describe the service in concrete terms: who will be there, what the child might see and hear, what people may do, and how long it is expected to last if you know. Depending on the family’s customs, mention prayer, flowers, burial, an open casket, or people crying. Explain that people may show strong feelings in different ways.
Before the event, agree on a trusted adult who can step outside with the child or take them home. Offer a role only if they want one, such as placing a flower, choosing a photo, or sharing a story. Never pressure a child to view or touch the body or to speak publicly. They may attend all of the event, part of it, or none of it.

Ways children can remember someone
A child who does not attend a ceremony can still have a meaningful remembrance, at the service or another time. Ask what feels comfortable rather than prescribing a ritual. NACG puts it simply: “There is no one correct way to commemorate the death of a loved one.”

When to seek extra support
Grief has no fixed timetable, and it can resurface around birthdays, holidays, or other milestones. Consider talking with the child’s pediatrician if difficulties persistently interfere with sleep, eating, schoolwork, relationships, or basic self-care. Persistent depression or anxiety, substance use, or unusual risk-taking are also reasons to seek professional guidance.
Take self-harm or suicidal statements seriously and seek urgent evaluation if there is an immediate risk of suicide. Depending on the child’s needs, possible support includes grief counseling, peer support, or help through a faith community. The AAP’s parent guidance on grief and loss in childhood and preparing children for a memorial offers additional guidance; Nationwide Children’s Hospital also describes ways to talk with children about death.
