There is no single Android setting that sets a maximum file size for photos. Smaller pictures come from three different levers: a lower capture resolution for new photos, if your phone’s camera offers one; a cropped copy of a photo you already have; or Google Photos’ Storage saver setting, which affects backed-up copies in your Google account. Each one changes something different, so pick the one that matches your problem before you start tapping.
Start by identifying your phone and camera app
Android camera apps are made by each manufacturer or by Google, and their menus differ. Google’s Pixel Camera help documents aspect-ratio choices but says its guidance is written for Pixel phones and points other users elsewhere. Google’s Camera from Google feature for 4:3 and 16:9 is available only on certain devices. Before following any menu steps, note your phone’s brand and model (Settings > About phone shows it) and the name of the camera app you open from the home screen.
Lower the capture resolution for future photos
Resolution is the only setting that changes how much image data the camera records for each new photo. Fewer pixels generally means a smaller file, although the exact size still depends on the scene and how the image is encoded, so the result is never guaranteed.

Depending on the phone, it may be labelled Resolution, Picture size, or a megapixel value such as 12 MP or 50 MP.

- Open the Camera app and tap the settings control (often a gear icon, or a menu under the three-dot or hamburger button).
- Search the settings list for Resolution, Picture size, or a megapixel setting. Some phones place it under a photo or camera section rather than the top level.
- Choose a lower pixel count if one is offered and you are comfortable with reduced detail.
- Take a test photo, open it in Google Photos or the Gallery app, and check its dimensions and size in the details or info view.
If no resolution option exists, the camera app on your phone does not expose capture resolution. Move on to the cropping or backup methods below, or check your manufacturer’s support pages for the model-specific menu.
Understand what aspect ratio changes
Some camera apps offer a choice between 4:3 and 16:9. This changes the shape of the frame, not the size of the file in any predictable way. Google’s Pixel Camera help labels the two options “Full image (4:3)” and “Wide crop (16:9)”. On a 16:9 capture, the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame are removed, so you lose composition, not a fixed share of the file.
| Option | What it changes | Effect on file size | Where it appears (per Google’s pages) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:3 (Pixel label: Full image) | Taller frame that keeps the full sensor area | Not stated as a size reduction; use the test-photo check | Pixel Camera help; Camera from Google on certain devices |
| 16:9 (Pixel label: Wide crop) | Wider frame that removes height from the top and bottom | Not stated as a guaranteed reduction | Pixel Camera help; Camera from Google on certain devices |
Choose the ratio for composition. Do not select it expecting a fixed percentage saving.

Cropping is the only built-in method covered in Google’s Android Gallery instructions for reducing a photo you have already taken. Google says edits can be saved as a separate photo, so the original stays in your library. The instructions do not promise a particular byte count or an exact-size compression control, so check the new file’s size after saving.

- Open the photo in the Gallery app.
- Tap Edit, then Crop.
- Drag the edges or corners to remove the parts you do not need.
- Tap Save as copy if offered, or otherwise save and keep the original in a separate file.
- Open the copy’s details to confirm its dimensions and size.
Cropping removes the parts of the picture outside the frame, so the copy has less composition. If you may need the full image later, keep the original.
Use Storage saver for Google Photos backups
Storage saver is a backup setting, not a camera setting. It changes how backed-up photos are stored in your Google account. It does not compress the photos stored on your phone, and it does not apply to photos that were never backed up.
According to Google Pixel Phone Help (undated page, accessed 2026), Storage saver resizes photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP. This is Google’s own product threshold, not an independent measurement of image quality. Google also says some files may be stored at their original size, so do not assume every photo will be reduced.
- Open the Google Photos app and sign in to the account you back up to.
- Open your profile picture or initial, then go to Photos settings and select Backup.
- Change Backup quality to Storage saver.
New backups use the setting from then on. Photos already in your account are not guaranteed to be re-encoded, so check the file size of an affected image after the change.

Free phone storage without altering the photos
If the goal is more room on the phone rather than smaller files, two options do not change image dimensions:
- Android Settings > Storage shows what is using space. Use the built-in file cleanup options there to review and remove items you no longer need.
- Moving files to an SD card or computer frees device storage. This works only on phones with an SD-card slot, and it changes where the file is stored, not how large the image is.
When a photo must fit an exact size limit
An email provider, job application portal, or form may set a limit in megabytes. The sources available for Android camera settings do not establish a universal built-in control that sets an exact target size in kilobytes or megabytes. The practical approach is to edit or re-capture, then check the file’s size in the details view before you attach it. If the file is still too large, repeat the crop or lower the capture resolution and check again.
Compare the three approaches
| Approach | When it applies | What changes | Quality or composition trade-off | Availability | Guarantees an exact file size? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower capture resolution | Future photos | Pixel dimensions recorded by the camera | Less detail; more noticeable when printing or zooming | Only where the camera app offers a resolution or picture-size option | No |
| Aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9) | Future photos | Shape of the frame and what is cropped | Loss of framing at the top and bottom on 16:9 | Pixel Camera; Camera from Google on certain devices | No |
| Crop a copy in Gallery | One existing photo | Dimensions and framing of the saved copy | Removed edges cannot be recovered from the copy | Google’s Android Gallery instructions | No |
| Storage saver in Google Photos | Backed-up photos in your Google account | Stored backup copy, with photos above 16 MP resized to 16 MP | Reduced backup quality; some files may stay at original size | Google Photos backup settings | No |
Troubleshooting
- The camera has no resolution setting. Use the crop-a-copy method for existing photos, or Storage saver for backups.
- The file is still too large after cropping. Cropping changes dimensions; check the copy’s size, and crop further or lower the capture resolution for future shots.
- The backup still shows the original size. Google says some files may be stored at original size under Storage saver, so the setting cannot be relied on for every image.
- Storage is still full after moving files. Check Settings > Storage for other large items, such as apps, downloads, and cached data, and confirm that the files you moved are no longer on the phone.
Keep the original of any photo you may need later, whichever method you use.
