For a sharper cover-screen selfie, use your foldable’s rear-camera workflow if it supports one, steady the phone on a firm surface, and trigger the shutter without touching the device. Then check focus and framing on the outer display and review the photo while you can still retake it. Exact gestures and camera tools differ by model.
Use the rear-camera workflow your foldable supports
Many clamshell foldables let you frame a selfie on the cover screen while taking the picture with the rear cameras. That gives you a way to use the phone’s rear-camera system instead of the selfie camera, but it does not guarantee a sharper result: steadiness, focus, light, and framing still matter.
On Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Flip6, Samsung describes FlexCam as a way to use the rear camera for selfies and to position the phone on a flat surface or at an adjusted Flex angle. For the Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung says to partially fold the phone and set it on a stable surface for hands-free photos with the rear camera. The guide identifies a 50 MP rear wide camera with autofocus and optical image stabilization; those are Z Flip8 specifications, not a general description of foldable cameras. Camera launch gestures and cover-screen capabilities vary. Check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that a gesture or camera arrangement shown for another foldable will apply.
Steady the phone before taking the picture
Small movements while framing or pressing the shutter can make a photo look less crisp, particularly when the phone is in your hand. Set the phone on a firm, level surface and adjust its angle before composing. A partially folded phone can act as its own support when the model allows it; Samsung specifically recommends stable placement for hands-free Z Flip8 photos.

If there is no suitable surface, a compact stand or tripod is an optional way to hold the phone still. It is not required if the phone’s hinge and a stable surface already give you a secure position.

Trigger the shutter without nudging the phone
Once the phone is positioned, avoid tapping the screen at the instant of capture if that movement could shake it. Choose a hands-free option that your model provides:

Samsung’s Z Flip8 guide documents palm and voice capture; its Z Flip6 guidance documents timer controls. These options are model-dependent, so check the camera controls on your phone. A hands-free trigger reduces the need to touch the device at capture, but does not correct poor focus or an unstable support.
Check focus and framing on the cover display
Before shooting, make sure the subject is in focus and placed where you want it in the frame. Use the cover-screen preview to verify that the phone is showing the intended camera view, especially if you are switching between lenses or changing zoom.

Available aids differ by model. Samsung documents tracking autofocus and composition grid lines for the Galaxy Z Flip6. Tracking autofocus can help keep a moving subject selected, while grid lines provide a framing reference. The Z Flip8 guide describes Auto Zoom and Dual Preview, which can help with subject placement and previewing. Those figures describe that model’s hardware; megapixel counts alone do not show which camera will produce the sharper photo in a particular situation.

Review the photo and retake if needed
Look at the captured image before the subject or moment is gone. Check the subject’s eyes or other important detail for focus, and confirm that the framing is right. If the result missed, adjust the phone’s position or focus and take another picture.

What these settings can—and cannot—do
Rear-camera cover-screen shooting, stable placement, hands-free shutter controls, and focus or framing aids address common causes of missed shots and movement. Manufacturer guides explain how to use these features, but they do not establish a universal or quantified sharpness improvement. Results depend on the phone, subject, conditions, and technique; review the image and retake it when focus or framing is off.
