To get sharp telephoto photos at night, steady the phone, confirm it is using the telephoto camera, focus on the subject, and match the exposure to how much the subject moves. Night mode or a longer capture can bring out detail in a static scene, but it can blur a moving person, animal, or vehicle. Keep the phone still until the capture finishes, then inspect the image at full size and adjust one cause of blur at a time.
Why telephoto night photos turn out blurry
At night, the camera receives less light. A phone may compensate by collecting light for longer, which makes small movements more visible in the final image. There are two separate sources of blur:
- Camera shake: the phone shifts during capture. Bracing it or using a tripod can help.
- Subject motion: the person, animal, or vehicle moves while the camera is capturing. A steady phone cannot freeze that movement; a shorter exposure is needed.
Google Pixel Camera Help explains that Long Exposure duration adapts to motion in the scene and also depends on the size and speed of the item in focus. The practical choice is a tradeoff: longer capture can reveal more detail in a still scene, while a shorter shutter can preserve movement but leave the image darker or noisier.

How to take the shot
- Clean and steady the phone. Wipe the rear camera glass. For a static subject, brace the phone against a solid surface or use a phone tripod with a smartphone holder. A timer or remote shutter, if available, can reduce movement from tapping the screen. A tripod is optional and helps with phone movement, not subject motion.
- Check which camera is active. Frame with the telephoto camera’s native optical view when possible. If your camera app offers manual lens selection, choose Tele. On phones that select cameras automatically, check the preview and lens indicator: a displayed zoom value alone does not prove that the physical telephoto camera is being used. Google documents automatic lens selection and manual selection on eligible Pixel models; the available controls vary by device and software version.
- Focus on the subject. Tap the subject to help autofocus when needed. Avoid moving the phone forward or backward after focusing, since that can change the focus distance. For distant sky subjects on supported Pixel devices, Google documents a Far focus setting for subjects more than 4 meters (13 feet) away. That specific control is not a general instruction for other phones or ordinary distant subjects.
- Choose the capture for the subject’s motion. For a building or still landscape, try Night mode and keep the phone still until the camera indicates that capture is complete. For a moving person or animal, do not maximize capture duration; if manual controls are available, try a shorter shutter speed and raise ISO only as needed. A shorter exposure reduces light, so the result may be darker or noisier. Samsung confirms that Pro mode on some Galaxy phones exposes shutter speed, ISO, exposure, focus, and white balance; available settings depend on the model.
- Take several frames and inspect them full size. Look for whether softness comes from camera movement, subject movement, missed focus, or digital zoom. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what helped.
Choose the approach by scene

Check your phone’s lens and Night mode behavior
Zoom labels and Night mode do not work identically across phones. Some models switch cameras automatically as you change zoom; a zoom number by itself does not establish which physical camera recorded the image. Night mode may also use different cameras on different devices, so do not assume it always uses a dedicated telephoto lens.

Google’s Pixel guidance describes automatic lens selection and manual selection on eligible models, including Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel 9 and later. This does not establish that every listed device exposes identical controls in every software version. Google’s hardware specifications also show that optical telephoto and stabilization details are model-specific, not universal phone features. Check your own model’s camera instructions for the available lens selector, Night mode, and manual controls.
What to expect from Night mode
Night mode can take several seconds. Apple advises holding an iPhone steady until the capture completes; Google and Samsung also recommend a steady surface or tripod for suitable low-light captures. Do not move the phone immediately after pressing the shutter. The exact duration and available modes depend on the phone, camera app, and scene.

There is no single shutter-speed setting that guarantees a sharp result across phones and subjects. The right balance depends on how quickly the subject moves, how much light is available, and which controls your camera app provides.
