To screenshot a page reached through an internationalized URL, navigate to the exact Unicode URL and capture the rendered page with a browser or browser-automation tool. If the evidence must show what appeared in the browser’s address bar, take a separate screenshot of the whole browser window or desktop: a page screenshot does not include browser chrome.
That distinction matters because a domain such as Bücher.de is processed into an ASCII-compatible hostname for DNS, while a browser may display it as Unicode or as Punycode beginning with xn--. The address bar’s display can vary with the browser’s safety rules; it is not necessarily the same representation as the URL supplied to your capture script.
Decide what the screenshot needs to show
Before capturing, decide what claim the image is meant to support. A browser page capture records rendered content, not the browser interface. Choose the capture type accordingly:
- Viewport: the visible page area at the current scroll position.
- Full page: the page’s full scrollable content in one image, where the capture tool supports it.
- Element: one selected page component, such as a heading or form.
- Visible URL: the browser’s address bar and surrounding chrome. This requires a whole-window or operating-system screenshot, not a page-only capture.
If the URL itself is evidence, preserve both views when useful: a page capture to show the result and a browser-window capture to show the address-bar presentation. Label each image so viewers can tell what it establishes.

Understand Unicode hostnames, paths, and address-bar display
Why a Unicode domain may appear as xn--
Internationalized domain names are mapped and validated through IDNA processing, then encoded in Punycode for DNS-compatible ASCII handling. For example, Unicode’s UTS #46 shows Bücher.de becoming xn--bcher-kva.de for the ASCII hostname and then being rendered as bücher.de in a browser-facing form. This is not necessarily a redirect or a different destination; it is a different representation of the processed domain label. See the Unicode Consortium’s UTS #46.
Why the browser may show Unicode or Punycode
Browsers do not have to display every internationalized hostname in the same way. Chromium’s URL display guidance explains that visually deceptive lookalike characters, or homoglyphs, are a key spoofing risk. Chrome may display Unicode when its rules permit and use the ASCII Punycode form when it considers that safer. A visible xn-- form is therefore a safety-oriented display choice, not proof by itself that the page failed. Consult the Chromium URL Display Guidelines.
Unicode can occur outside the hostname
A URL may contain non-ASCII characters in its path or query as well as in its host. Those parts follow different URL handling rules: RFC 3987 describes mapping IRI characters to UTF-8 octets and percent-encoded URI sequences, while domain labels have their own IDN conversion. A copied or serialized URL may consequently show percent escapes even when the address bar or page looks readable. See RFC 3987.
Be careful with right-to-left text
When a URL contains bidirectional text, its visual order can make the boundary between hostname and path hard to read. The WHATWG URL Standard warns that IDNs, special characters, and bidirectional text should be handled with care to prevent spoofing; it notes that bidirectional rendering can confuse host and path. For a URL being documented as evidence, identify the hostname explicitly in the caption or accompanying text rather than relying on visual direction alone. Capture an internationalized URL with Playwright
For a repeatable page capture, Playwright can navigate to a Unicode URL and save a viewport, full-page image, or element image. Install Playwright and its browser binaries as described in the Playwright screenshots documentation. The examples below use Node.js and the documented page screenshot API.

Save this as capture.mjs after installing Playwright in the project. Replace the example URL with the exact URL you need to document.

}page.png captures the viewport; page-full.png asks Playwright to capture the full scrollable page. The viewport is specified in CSS pixels. A page screenshot does not include the browser tabs, controls, or address bar. If a page never reaches network idle because it maintains long-running connections, choose a different readiness condition suited to that site—for example, wait for a known selector or use a bounded delay after navigation—rather than letting a capture hang indefinitely.

Capture one element
Use a locator screenshot when the evidence concerns one component. Select a stable selector that identifies the intended element:

If the selector matches multiple elements, make it specific enough to identify the one you mean. A missing or hidden target should be handled as a capture failure, not silently represented as a successful screenshot.
Make the capture reproducible
When another person needs to reproduce or compare the image, record the browser name and version, operating system, Playwright version, exact Unicode input, final URL reported by the browser automation, viewport dimensions, and device scale factor. This is useful because browser URL rendering policies and pixel output may differ. Inspect the saved image for clipped content, missing glyphs, and legibility, especially at the host/path boundary or when right-to-left characters are present.

Capture the visible address bar separately
To show the browser’s displayed URL, capture the browser window or the entire operating-system screen while the address bar is visible. The exact window-capture controls differ by OS and browser, so use the method available on your system and verify the saved image includes the address bar and enough context to identify it as browser chrome. A page automation screenshot alone cannot establish what characters were visibly shown in that bar.

Troubleshooting internationalized URL screenshots
The browser shows xn-- instead of the Unicode domain
This can be the browser’s IDN safety display behavior, particularly where Unicode characters could resemble other characters. Record the shown form faithfully. If your purpose is to show the human-readable input, include that exact input in the caption or a separate note; do not edit the screenshot to imply the browser displayed something else.

The page capture has no address bar
That is expected for a page-level screenshot. Take an additional browser-window or OS screenshot with the address bar visible. Use the page capture for rendered content and the whole-window capture for the displayed URL.

The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing images
First confirm the page actually loaded and that the URL resolves to the intended destination in the same browser context. Wait for a meaningful page condition, such as the main content selector becoming visible, instead of relying only on a fixed delay. For lazy-loaded images, scroll the page or otherwise trigger loading before requesting a full-page image; check the result because a full-page option does not guarantee every site’s deferred content has loaded.
Unicode appears as percent escapes after copying
Some browsers may percent-encode Unicode URL characters when copying a URL. Unicode’s UTS #58 discusses this behavior and gives examples that remain usable when pasted back into the address bar. If the copied string is part of the record, preserve it as copied and distinguish it from the original human-entered URL and the browser’s visible rendering. See Unicode UTS #58.
Right-to-left text makes the URL hard to interpret
Do not rely on visual ordering alone. Record the hostname and path separately in explanatory text, and make sure the screenshot is clear enough to show the relevant boundary. The URL Standard identifies bidirectional rendering as a potential source of host/path confusion.

The automated run times out
A timeout can mean the destination is slow, unreachable, waiting on a challenge, or never becomes idle because of ongoing network activity. Confirm the URL manually, increase the timeout only when a longer load is expected, and prefer a page-specific readiness selector over waiting for all network activity to stop. If the page cannot be loaded, do not label a blank or failed capture as a successful screenshot of its content.

- the exact Unicode URL entered, including path and query;
- the final URL reported after navigation, if available;
- whether the image is a viewport, full-page, element, or whole-window capture;
- browser and version, operating system, capture-tool version, viewport, and device scale;
- whether the browser displayed the host in Unicode or Punycode;
- a note identifying any right-to-left text or potentially confusing host/path boundary.
These notes explain the conditions behind the pixels. They do not turn a page screenshot into proof of the address bar, DNS traffic, or the legitimacy of a domain; capture each kind of evidence using a method that actually shows it.

Does a screenshot prove that an internationalized domain is safe?
No. A screenshot records displayed pixels, not domain ownership or safety. Unicode lookalikes can be deceptive; verify the destination independently when trust matters.
