To take a picture on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open the Camera app, select Photo if needed, frame your subject in the viewfinder, and tap the shutter button. The camera chooses settings automatically in Photo mode, and Samsung says your photos and videos are saved in Gallery. Camera modes, menu names, and controls vary by model and software version, so use the controls visible in your app if an option below is missing.
Take a basic photo
- Open Camera. Tap the Camera app on your phone.
- Select Photo. If another mode is active, choose Photo from the modes shown in the app.
- Frame the shot. Position your subject in the viewfinder. If your camera offers tap-to-focus, tap the subject on screen.
- Capture. Tap the shutter button. On supported devices, a configured volume button can also take the picture.
- Find the result. Open Gallery to view and manage saved photos.
Samsung describes Photo mode as using automatic settings, making it a practical place to start before trying controls that require more adjustment. Exact control placement differs across Galaxy interfaces. Samsung’s overview of Galaxy camera modes and settings notes that available options vary by device.
Choose a camera mode for the shot
Modes are designed for different kinds of pictures. The choices available on your phone may differ by model and software version; treat these as examples, not a guaranteed list.

Portrait for a background effect
Choose Portrait when you want the camera to apply an effect to the background behind a subject. The feature may not appear on every Galaxy phone. Samsung explains availability and use in its Portrait mode and Live Focus guide.

Night for dim scenes
When the scene is dark, look for Night mode rather than assuming Photo mode will offer the same controls. Samsung says: “Night mode uses multi-frame processing to combine 30 images into one clear photo.” That description is Samsung’s published explanation of Night mode, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model uses identical controls or processing. Pro when you want manual adjustments
Pro mode can expose controls such as ISO, shutter speed, exposure value, focus, and white balance. These settings change how the camera captures a scene, but you do not need to adjust them for ordinary pictures; start with automatic Photo mode and explore Pro when you want to make deliberate changes. Samsung India describes these controls in its Galaxy camera modes guide. Availability may differ by model and region.

Take a selfie or group photo hands-free
If you cannot comfortably reach the shutter, check your Camera app’s shooting-method settings. Depending on the phone, you may find options such as voice commands, showing your palm to the camera, a floating shutter button, or using the volume buttons. These methods can help when the phone is positioned away from you, but neither their availability nor their labels are universal. Samsung describes examples in its Galaxy selfie guide and basic Galaxy camera instructions.

Optional settings can help you compose or tailor a shot. Look through the settings actually shown in your Camera app rather than relying on a fixed path: menus and features change between devices and software versions.

- Grid lines or composition guides: May help you line up the subject and scene.
- Tracking autofocus: On supported devices, can help the camera follow a selected subject.
- Stabilization: Video stabilization settings may be available for recording clips.
- Image and video formats: Some phones offer choices for how photos or videos are saved.
These are examples, not features present on every Galaxy model. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 camera-features guide covers options for that generation; do not assume its settings appear on other devices.

If a mode or control is missing
- Check the modes and settings displayed in your own Camera app; a feature may not be supported on your model.
- Bear in mind that software version and region can affect available features and labels.
- For a named feature, consult Samsung support for your specific device rather than applying steps written for a different Galaxy model.
