Use the Galaxy Z Fold’s cover screen to let a portrait subject check their framing, and use the main screen or Flex mode when a larger view or hands-free setup helps. The exact controls vary by Fold generation, software and shooting mode, so the steps below identify model-specific workflows rather than treating every Fold alike.
Use the cover-screen preview for portraits and group photos
Cover Screen Preview (also called Dual Screen Preview on some models) lets people in front of the camera see how they appear before you take the picture. They can adjust their pose, expression or position while you frame the shot. This can be especially useful for group photos, where subjects can see whether they are in the frame. Samsung notes that preview availability is limited to some shooting modes.

Samsung documents Cover Screen Preview for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra; the Fold6 manual documents a dual-preview workflow. Names and availability differ across models. Check the Camera app on your Fold rather than assuming the feature or its controls match another generation. Samsung’s Fold8 Ultra camera guide and the Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual describe their respective versions.

The Fold6 manual describes using the rear camera while monitoring the cover-screen preview. Samsung’s wording is: “You can check the preview on the cover screen and take self-portraits with the rear camera.” The manual limits this feature to some shooting modes.

Use the main screen to compose and review
For a larger view while composing, open Camera on the main screen, choose Photo, position the phone and capture the image. Samsung’s Fold7 guide describes opening the resulting image in Gallery from the thumbnail. On Fold7, the guide also covers opening Camera from either screen and switching cameras; its controls should not be assumed to apply unchanged to other generations. See Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 camera guide.

Feature availability and menu placement can vary by software and model. The details are in the Fold6 user manual.

Set focus and brightness on Galaxy Z Fold6
On the Fold6, Samsung’s manual says to tap the viewfinder where you want focus, then use the displayed adjustment bar to change picture brightness. The exact presentation may differ by model or software version, and the bar appears as part of the camera interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Flex mode for a hands-free shot
When the device and app support it, partially fold the phone and set it on a stable, flat surface to use the Camera app hands-free. A timer can give you time to join the frame; timer controls vary, so check your model’s Camera interface. Flex mode and app support are not universal. Samsung’s current Flex mode guidance lists device exceptions, including the Fold8, so verify compatibility before relying on this setup.
Open the cover-screen camera quickly on Galaxy Z Fold7
On Fold7, double-pressing the Power button opens Camera on the Flex Window if the Side button’s double-press action is set to Camera. If the shortcut does not open the camera, check that Side button setting. Samsung’s Fold7 cover-screen and main-screen tips describe the shortcut.
Quick Recap
Choose the screen for the shot
- Subject should see the framing: use Cover Screen Preview or Dual Screen Preview, if your model and shooting mode support it.
- You want to use the rear cameras for a self-portrait: follow the Fold6 rear-camera selfie workflow if you have that model; check your model’s instructions for equivalent controls.
- You want a larger composing view: open Camera on the main screen. Fold7’s guide documents this workflow and reviewing the photo from its thumbnail.
- You need a hands-free position: use Flex mode on a stable surface only if both your device and Camera app support it.
- You need to act quickly: Fold7 can open Camera with a configured Side button double-press.
