For most everyday scenes, start in the Camera app’s standard Photo mode. Clean the lens, steady the phone, and frame the subject; switch to Portrait for background blur, Night for dim scenes, or Pro when you want to control exposure and focus. Expert RAW is for photographers who want more latitude to edit afterward—not a shortcut that automatically makes every picture better.
Camera modes, menu names, and advanced features vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region. The paths and capabilities below are therefore described by purpose rather than as universal button-by-button instructions.
Set up the shot before changing camera settings
- Clean the camera lens. Fingerprints or dust can soften detail and add haze, especially around bright lights.
- Hold the phone securely. Brace your arms or rest the phone on a stable surface when possible. Stability matters more in dim light or during a long capture.
- Check the frame. Look for distracting objects near the edges and make sure the subject is where you want it.
- Tap the subject to focus or set exposure if your camera interface supports it. The exact response and controls differ across devices.
Samsung notes that available camera modes and interfaces can differ between devices, and that some modes have been removed on newer models. Check the Camera app on your own phone rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same options. Samsung’s guide to Galaxy camera modes
Choose a mode that fits the scene
Photo mode: the everyday starting point
Standard Photo mode is the simplest choice for everyday subjects. The camera makes exposure and other automatic decisions, which is convenient when the light or subject is changing quickly. Take a moment to check the preview and framing before you shoot; use a specialized mode only when its effect suits the subject.

Portrait: separate a person from the background
Portrait or Live Focus is designed to emphasize a subject with simulated background blur. On devices covered by Samsung’s UK guidance, the blur can be adjusted, and the guide recommends placing the subject around 1–1.5 m from the phone for that specific Live Focus workflow. Treat that distance as device-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every Galaxy portrait mode. Samsung’s guide to Galaxy camera modes
Night: help with dim scenes
Night mode is intended for low-light scenes. Samsung says its camera recognizes scene light levels and adjusts exposure and white balance. Keep the phone as still as you can while it captures; a stable surface or compatible smartphone tripod can help when handheld steadiness is difficult. A tripod is optional, not a requirement. Pro mode is useful when automatic choices are not producing the look you want or you want to make settings intentionally. Samsung lists ISO, shutter speed, exposure, focus, and white balance among the Pro controls, though the interface and available options vary by device. Change one control at a time and check the preview so you can see what it does.

- ISO: Changes sensor sensitivity. Raising it can brighten a dim image, but can also make visible noise more noticeable.
- Shutter speed: Sets how long the camera captures light. A longer exposure can brighten a still scene, but movement can appear blurred; keep the phone steady as the exposure gets longer.
- White balance: Shifts the image’s color temperature, helping adjust whether the scene looks warmer or cooler.
- Focus: Lets you control what distance or subject appears sharp when manual focus is available.
- Exposure compensation: Nudges the camera’s target brightness brighter or darker without requiring a single fixed setting for every scene.
There is no one ideal ISO, shutter speed, or exposure setting for every subject and Galaxy model. Start with a small adjustment, inspect the image, and revise according to the light, motion, and look you want. For Samsung’s overview of Pro controls, see its camera-mode guide.
Understand JPEG, RAW, and Expert RAW
A JPEG is generally the more convenient choice when you want a ready-to-share image. RAW is intended for further editing: it retains more original sensor information and gives you more latitude to adjust the image later. That latitude does not guarantee a better-looking photo without editing.

Samsung says Expert RAW saves both a JPEG and a 16-bit Linear DNG RAW file. The app also offers manual adjustments including ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus. It is an option for people who plan to edit or want more deliberate control, rather than an automatic replacement for the regular Camera app. Samsung’s Expert RAW instructions

Galaxy S23-specific astrophotography details
For the Galaxy S23 guidance specifically, Samsung documents Astrophoto capture durations of four, seven, or ten minutes and an optional Sky Guide that can be shown or hidden. Those choices are not universal Galaxy settings. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 camera features
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Photograph the night sky and other long exposures
Where the phone and software support it, Samsung’s Expert RAW workflow lets you choose astrophotography, adjust focus, white balance, and exposure time, and optionally use a constellation Sky Guide. A longer capture makes steadiness especially important, so a stable surface or compatible smartphone tripod may help. Results also depend on conditions such as weather and light pollution, as well as the phone model; feature availability alone does not guarantee a particular result. Samsung’s Expert RAW instructions
Edit and share in the format that suits the next step
Choose JPEG when convenience and broad sharing are the priority; choose RAW or RAW+JPEG when you expect to edit and want the extra image data. Expert RAW’s paired JPEG and DNG files let you keep a more immediately usable version alongside the file intended for editing.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 guidance notes that high-efficiency HEIF may not be supported by some apps or websites, and documents JPEG, RAW+JPEG, or RAW choices for Pro mode on that series. Treat those format choices as S23-specific guidance: your own phone’s Camera settings and the app or site you use determine what is available and accepted. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 camera features
