The fastest screenshot shortcut depends on whether you want to capture the whole display, one window, or only a selected area. On Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu, some shortcuts save an image immediately while others copy it to the clipboard or open a capture overlay.
Use the shortcut that matches the result you need, then check the platform-specific save location below.
Windows 11 and Windows 10

Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
- Press Windows + PrtScn at the same time.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Pictures > Screenshots.
Windows may briefly dim the display when it captures the screen. If nothing appears in the folder, make sure you pressed the Windows key as well as PrtScn; pressing PrtSc by itself normally copies the image instead of saving it as a file.
Copy the whole screen to another app
Press PrtSc, open an app such as Paint, Word, an email message, or an image editor, and press Ctrl + V. This is useful when you do not need a separate screenshot file.

Windows behavior can vary with configuration and version. In current Microsoft documentation, PrtSc is a clipboard capture and can also open Snipping Tool, while Windows + PrtScn is the shortcut specifically documented for saving the full screen.
Capture part of the screen, a window, or the entire display
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose one of the capture types: Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select the area or window to capture.
- Use the notification that appears to open the image in Snipping Tool, or paste the capture directly with Ctrl + V.
To open Snipping Tool without a shortcut, select Start, type snipping tool, and select Snipping Tool from the results.
Capture a menu that disappears when you click elsewhere
Snipping Tool can add a delay before capturing, which gives you time to open a context menu or other temporary menu.

- Select See More (…) > Settings if you need to check its automatic-save behavior.
- Set a delay of one to five seconds. You can also use Alt + D.
- Open the menu you want to show.
- Press Ctrl + PrtSc, choose the required snip type under Mode, and select the capture area.
Some older Windows instructions refer to the arrow beside New. Current versions use Mode; the label depends on the Snipping Tool version.

Capture the whole Mac screen
Press and release Shift + Command + 3. macOS normally saves the result on the desktop with a name similar to Screen Shot [date] at [time].
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Drag the crosshair over the area you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button.
Press Esc to cancel. Hold the Space bar while dragging to move the selection without changing its dimensions.

- Open the window or menu.
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Press and release the Space bar. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the window or menu.
Hold Option while clicking if you want to leave out the window’s shadow.

Copy a Mac screenshot instead of saving it
Hold Control in addition to the normal shortcut. For example, use Control + Shift + Command + 3 to copy the entire screen to the clipboard. You can then paste it with Command + V.
Change the save location and other options
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. You can also open it from Applications > Utilities > Screenshot. Select Options to change the save location, set a timer, show or hide the mouse pointer, and control the floating thumbnail.
The thumbnail may appear briefly in a corner after capture. Click it to edit the screenshot immediately, or wait for it to save automatically. Holding the pointer over the thumbnail keeps it visible until you act on it or move the pointer away.

Important: Shift + Command + 5 opens the Screenshot app; it is not the direct full-screen capture shortcut. Use Shift + Command + 3 for an immediate full-screen screenshot.

Use the screenshot overlay
- Press Print, or open the system menu and select the screenshot button.
- Choose an area, Screen, or Window.
- For an area capture, select the area with the handles or crosshair.
- For a window capture, select Window and choose a window from the overview. The active window is selected initially.
- Select the large round capture button.
Ubuntu automatically saves screenshots to ~/Pictures/Screenshots/. The filename begins with Screenshot and includes the capture date and time. The captured image is also copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it into an image editor or another application.

On current Ubuntu versions, Shift + Print captures the entire screen immediately. It does not open a rectangular-area selector; use Print first and select the area in the overlay.

When a screenshot shortcut does not work
- Nothing happens: try the platform’s overlay shortcut instead—Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Shift + Command + 5 on macOS, or Print on Ubuntu.
- The image is not in a folder: check whether the shortcut copied it to the clipboard. Open Paint or another editor and paste it.
- Your laptop has a combined key: hold Fn as well as the screenshot key. On Windows devices without a Print Screen key, try Fn + Windows + Space.
- A menu closes before capture: use Snipping Tool’s delay on Windows or the Screenshot app’s timer on macOS.
- A protected video window is blank or blocked: some applications, including Apple TV, can prevent screenshots of their windows.
- The screenshot has the wrong dimensions: use a window or area capture instead of the full-screen command, particularly when multiple monitors are connected.
