The right HP screenshot shortcut depends on whether your computer runs Windows or ChromeOS. On an HP Windows PC, press Windows+PrtSc to save the whole screen, Windows+Shift+S to select an area, or PrtSc to copy the screen for pasting. On an HP Chromebook, press the Screenshot key or Ctrl+Shift+Show windows, then choose full-screen, partial, or window capture.

First identify your HP operating system
“HP device” describes the hardware, not the software. HP laptops and desktops commonly run Windows, while HP Chromebooks run ChromeOS. The shortcuts and storage locations are different.

To check Windows, open Start > Settings > System > About and look for Windows specifications. On a Chromebook, click the time in the lower-right corner; ChromeOS controls appear in the status area.

Windows: save the entire screen immediately
Use Windows+PrtSc
- Arrange the HP screen exactly as you want it captured.
- Press the Windows logo key and PrtSc together. The key may be labeled PrtScn or another similar abbreviation.
- If nothing happens, hold Fn as well: Fn+Windows+PrtSc. Some HP laptop keyboards put Print Screen on a shared function key.
- Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Windows saves the image as a PNG, usually with a sequential filename.
This is the quickest choice when you need a permanent image of every visible monitor area. It does not ask you to drag a rectangle or choose a destination each time.
What if you use multiple monitors?
Windows+PrtSc captures the desktop arrangement shown by Windows, which can include more than one display. If you need only one application or monitor, use Snipping Tool instead and select a window or a rectangle.
Windows: copy a screenshot instead of saving a file
Copy the full screen with PrtSc
- Press PrtSc. On an HP laptop that uses the key for another function, press Fn+PrtSc.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, a chat window, or another image-capable application.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
PrtSc normally places the image on the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file in Pictures. Clipboard contents can be replaced by your next copy operation, so paste the image before copying something else.

Windows supports Alt+PrtSc for the currently active window. Because behavior can vary by keyboard and Windows configuration, use Windows+Shift+S and choose window mode when you need a clearly defined result. HP also documents Shift+PrtSc on some supported laptop setups, but it is not universal.

Windows: capture a region, window, or freeform shape
Open the Snipping Tool overlay
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool overlay opens at the top of the screen.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangle, drag around the content. For freeform mode, draw the outline. In window mode, select the window you want.
- Click the notification that appears after the capture to open Snipping Tool.
- Use the available pen, highlighter, crop, or other editing controls, then choose Save or share the result.
Current Windows versions can automatically save captured snips in the Screenshots folder. Snipping Tool settings let you change automatic saving behavior and the destination, so check those settings if the file is not where expected.
Choose the best Snipping Tool mode

Windows: keyboard and accessibility alternatives
If reaching the physical key is difficult, open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app directly. You can also pin it to the taskbar or create a keyboard shortcut through a taskbar pin. The on-screen keyboard, available from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, can provide a virtual Print Screen key when the hardware key is damaged.
For delayed captures, open Snipping Tool and choose its delay control before selecting a snip. A delay is useful for menus that disappear as soon as you press a key.
HP Chromebook: capture with ChromeOS Screen Capture
Use the dedicated Screenshot key
- Display the page or app you want to capture.
- Press the keyboard’s Screenshot key, if your HP Chromebook has one.
- Choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture in the controls that appear.
- Confirm the selection. ChromeOS copies the image to the clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default.
Use the Chromebook shortcut
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle followed by two vertical lines on many Chromebook keyboards.
- Select Screenshot if a menu appears.
- Choose full, partial, or window mode, then make your selection.
On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl+Shift+F5 as the alternative shortcut.

Open Screen Capture from the status area
Click the time in the lower-right corner, open the Screen Capture control, and select the capture type. This route is useful when the keyboard legend is unfamiliar or a shortcut conflicts with an external keyboard layout.
Where screenshots are saved

If you changed OneDrive or another backup service to manage your Pictures folder, the visible path may include that service’s folder. Search File Explorer for “Screenshots” if the standard folder is empty.
Fixes when an HP screenshot shortcut does not work
The Print Screen key shares another function
Try Fn+PrtSc, and check whether the key has a lock, camera, or other secondary icon. On some HP models, function-key behavior changes when the Fn-lock state changes.
You expected a file but only copied an image
That is normal for PrtSc. Open an image editor and press Ctrl+V. For an automatic file, use Windows+PrtSc or save the result from Snipping Tool.

The Snipping Tool overlay does not appear
- Press the shortcut again after clicking the desktop; another app may have consumed the first key press.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and use its capture button.
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Check whether a corporate keyboard utility or remote-desktop session is intercepting Windows-key shortcuts.
You cannot find a Chromebook capture
Open the Files app and check Downloads. Also look at the clipboard by pressing Ctrl+V in an image-capable app. ChromeOS may show a thumbnail notification; selecting it opens the captured image.
The capture is black or missing protected content
Some video players, banking pages, virtual machines, and protected-media surfaces deliberately block screen capture. Try capturing the surrounding application window, consult the service’s export feature, or ask the content owner for an authorized copy. Do not bypass access controls.
