On an HP Envy running Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + S to choose and capture part of the screen, a window, or the full screen. For an automatically saved full-screen image, press Windows + PrtScn. HP Envy keyboards vary by model, so the Print Screen key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, or may require the Fn key.
Choose the shortcut that matches what you want to capture
Windows 11 includes several screenshot methods. Their main differences are what they capture and whether the image is copied or saved automatically. Start with this table, then follow the matching steps below.
| What you want | Shortcut | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen, a window, or the whole screen | Windows + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay; the capture is copied to the clipboard. |
| Copy the entire screen | PrtScn | Copies the full screen to the clipboard. |
| Copy just the active window | Alt + PrtScn | Copies the active window to the clipboard. |
| Save the entire screen automatically | Windows + PrtScn | Saves a screenshot in PicturesScreenshots. |
| Use a keyboard with no dedicated Print Screen key | Fn + Windows + Space Bar | A Microsoft-listed alternative on supported hardware; availability depends on the keyboard. |
For most tasks, use Windows + Shift + S: it lets you choose the capture area before taking the screenshot. Use Windows + PrtScn when you want the entire screen saved as a file without first pasting it into another app.
Capture a selected area, window, or full screen with Snipping Tool
- Arrange the screen as you want it to appear in the image.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Windows dims the desktop and displays the Snipping Tool overlay.
- Choose a capture mode: Rectangular, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
- Make the selection. For a rectangular snip, click and drag over the area. For a window snip, choose the target window. For a full-screen snip, capture the desktop.
- Use the notification that appears after capture to open the image in Snipping Tool if you want to edit or save it.
The image is copied to the clipboard, so you can also switch to an app and press Ctrl + V to paste it. If you need a file, open the capture in Snipping Tool and select its Save button. Snipping Tool also provides pen and highlighter tools and a way to crop the capture before saving.
#1 Best Overall
Which Snipping Tool mode should you use?
- Rectangular: Use this for a defined part of the desktop, such as a dialog box, chart, or section of a webpage.
- Freeform: Use this when you want to draw an irregular outline around the content instead of capturing a rectangle.
- Window: Use this to capture one application window rather than the whole desktop. It is the most direct choice when you want one window but prefer the Snipping Tool workflow.
- Full screen: Use this to capture everything visible across the desktop.
Take a full-screen screenshot and save it automatically
Press Windows + PrtScn. Windows saves the full-screen capture in the PicturesScreenshots folder. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures, then open Screenshots, to find it. If your Windows setup redirects the Pictures folder, look for the Screenshots subfolder inside the Pictures location shown in File Explorer.
This shortcut is useful when you want a saved image straight away rather than a clipboard capture. It captures the full screen; it does not let you select a region or a single window. Use Windows + Shift + S for those choices.
Capture only the active window
Bring the window you want to capture to the foreground, then press Alt + PrtScn. Windows copies that active window to the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another application that accepts images, and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
This shortcut does not automatically create a screenshot file. To keep the capture as a file, paste it into an app and use that app’s save command, or use Snipping Tool and save the image from its editor.
Find the Print Screen key on an HP Envy
“HP Envy” refers to multiple laptop models with different keyboard layouts. Look across the top row and near the upper-right area of the keyboard for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. The exact position and labeling depend on the model, so there is no single Print Screen key position or combination that applies to every Envy.
If the Print Screen label is printed as a secondary function on a key, hold Fn while pressing that key. If you cannot find a Print Screen label, try Fn + Windows + Space Bar; it is an alternative documented by Microsoft for supported hardware, not a guarantee for every HP Envy.

You can use Windows + Shift + S without finding a dedicated Print Screen key. It is often the easiest option when the keyboard labeling is unclear, and it provides capture modes for an area, window, or full screen.
Save, paste, and edit the screenshot
The key question after a capture is whether it went to the clipboard or became a file. Windows + Shift + S, PrtScn, and Alt + PrtScn are clipboard-oriented: after capturing, press Ctrl + V in an image-capable app to paste the picture. The recipient app may let you edit or save it using its own controls.
For a Snipping Tool capture, open the notification that appears after the snip to reach the editor. Make any needed crop or annotation, then select Save. If you dismiss the notification, open Snipping Tool from Start and use its available controls; a clipboard-oriented shortcut does not by itself place a file in PicturesScreenshots.
Use Windows + PrtScn when you want Windows to save the whole-screen image directly. Use the Snipping Tool editor when the capture needs a crop, pen mark, or highlight before you save it. If you only need to insert a screenshot into a document or message, pasting from the clipboard avoids making and locating a separate file first.
Capture a menu that closes when you click elsewhere
Some menus disappear when you click outside them to start a selection. In that case, open Snipping Tool from Start first, rather than beginning with the Windows + Shift + S overlay. Use the app’s delay option, which supports delays from 1 to 5 seconds, then open or position the menu during the delay and capture it when ready.

Windows + Shift + S does nothing
Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app directly. You can make a capture from there. This also gives you access to the delay option when a menu or other transient item needs to remain visible until capture.

Pressing PrtScn copies an image, but no file appears
That is expected for the clipboard-oriented PrtScn shortcut. Open an app and press Ctrl + V, or use Windows + PrtScn when you want Windows to save the full-screen image automatically in PicturesScreenshots.
PrtScn opens the snipping overlay instead of copying the screen
Windows may be set to use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Microsoft documents a setting for changing that behavior. In Windows Settings, search for Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping and change it if you want the key to behave differently. The exact label or location can vary with Windows updates; using Windows + Shift + S directly still opens the overlay.
The Print Screen shortcut does not work on the keyboard
Check whether the key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, and whether that label is a secondary function requiring Fn. If there is no dedicated key, try Fn + Windows + Space Bar on supported hardware. Since Envy layouts differ, use Windows + Shift + S if neither keyboard option works.

The screenshot is not in the folder you expected
Only Windows + PrtScn automatically saves a screenshot to PicturesScreenshots. The other shortcuts described here copy captures to the clipboard; paste one into an app or open a Snipping Tool capture and save it. If Pictures is redirected on your PC, inspect its current location in File Explorer.

For a different task—capturing a webpage by URL rather than taking a picture of your laptop’s current desktop—ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is not a replacement for a Windows screen capture: it captures a URL you supply, not the current contents of your HP Envy display.
Here is the cURL call, using the documented endpoint and a sample target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
