The fastest way to screenshot a Dell XPS 14 is Windows + Shift + S. Windows opens Snipping Tool, where you can capture a rectangle, freeform shape, window, or the entire display. Select the capture notification to annotate, crop, copy, share, or save it. For an automatically saved full-screen image, press Windows + PrtScn; Windows stores it in Pictures > Screenshots.
Choose the method that matches what you need
| Goal | Shortcut or action | Result | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture part of the screen | Windows + Shift + S | Choose rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen | Snipping Tool overlay and clipboard; save manually |
| Save the entire screen immediately | Windows + PrtScn | Full-screen image file | Pictures > Screenshots |
| Copy the entire screen | PrtScn | Static full-screen snapshot | Clipboard; paste into Paint, Word, email, or another app |
| Capture one application window | Windows + Shift + S, then Window | Only the selected window | Snipping Tool and clipboard until saved |
| Capture an open menu or tooltip | Open Snipping Tool first, then use its capture flow; Microsoft also documents Ctrl + PrtSc | Menu or tooltip included in the selection | Snipping Tool and clipboard until saved |
How to capture a selected area
This is the best general-purpose method when you need a portion of a webpage, document, or app without surrounding desktop clutter.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool bar appears.
- Choose Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen from the toolbar.
- For a rectangle or freeform snip, drag around the content. For a window snip, click the window you want. For full screen, select the display.
- Click the Snipping Tool notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool directly, to annotate, crop, copy, or share the capture.
- Press Ctrl + S, choose a filename and location, and save the image.
If you do not need an edited file, the capture is already on the clipboard. Press Ctrl + V in an image-capable app to paste it.
Rectangle versus freeform
Use Rectangle for clean documentation and predictable dimensions. Use Freeform when the subject has an irregular outline and you want to exclude nearby content.

Capture one window without the taskbar
Press Windows + Shift + S, choose Window, and click the target application. This avoids including other open windows, desktop icons, or the taskbar.
How to save a full-screen screenshot automatically
- Press Windows + PrtScn.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or share the image as needed.
This method saves immediately and does not require the Snipping Tool notification. If your XPS 14 keyboard has no dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space bar as an alternative.
How to copy the full screen without saving a file
Press PrtScn once. Windows places a static image of the full screen on the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable application and press Ctrl + V. You can then crop or annotate it and save it from that application.

This is useful when you need to paste a screenshot directly into a support ticket or document and do not want an image file left in your Screenshots folder.

How to screenshot a menu or tooltip
- Open Snipping Tool before opening the menu or tooltip.
- Open the menu or move the pointer so the tooltip appears.
- Start the capture from Snipping Tool and select the required area. Microsoft also documents Ctrl + PrtSc for capturing an open menu before selecting a region.
- Open the resulting notification to edit and save the image.
Starting the tool first matters because a menu can disappear when you use a shortcut from another application.
Finding the Print Screen key on an XPS 14
Dell uses different keyboard layouts across XPS 14 generations and regions. Look for a legend reading PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrtScr, either on its own key or as a secondary symbol on a function-row key. Dell laptop layouts may require combinations such as Fn + F10 or Fn + Insert; use the combination printed on your keyboard rather than assuming every XPS 14 is identical.
When the function row is in media-key mode
Hold Fn while pressing the key that carries the Print Screen symbol. If the key is an F-row key, the XPS 14 may otherwise interpret the press as volume, brightness, or another media command.
If Print Screen opens Snipping Tool
That behavior is supported by Windows. Use the overlay intentionally for a selectable capture. If you specifically need an automatically saved full-screen file, use Windows + PrtScn instead.

Model-specific guidance
The XPS 14 9440 owner manual includes a keyboard-shortcuts section. Other XPS 14 generations can place secondary functions differently, so the legends on your physical keyboard take priority over instructions for another generation.
Editing, annotating, and sharing with Snipping Tool
After a capture, open the Snipping Tool notification or launch the app to access its editing workflow. You can annotate, crop, copy, save, and share the image. Use a delay capture when you need time to open a menu, expand a control, or position a tooltip before the shutter occurs.
- Annotate: mark the exact button, error, or region that another person must inspect.
- Crop: remove unrelated desktop or browser content before sharing.
- Copy: place the edited result on the clipboard for immediate pasting.
- Save: use Ctrl + S and select the destination rather than relying on a temporary clipboard copy.
- Share: send the saved or edited capture through an application that supports image files.
Troubleshooting Dell XPS 14 screenshots
The shortcut does nothing
- Try Windows + Shift + S; it does not depend on locating the Print Screen legend.
- Check whether your keyboard requires Fn with the Print Screen key.
- Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrtScr on an F-row key or Insert.
- If the function row is in media mode, hold Fn while pressing the marked key.
The screenshot was taken but cannot be found
PrtScn alone copies to the clipboard; it does not create a file. Paste it into Paint or another app and save it. Windows + PrtScn saves to Pictures > Screenshots. A Snipping Tool capture remains unsaved until you select the notification and use Ctrl + S.

The wrong display or window was captured
Use Window mode and click the intended application, or use Rectangle to define the exact area. Full-screen shortcuts capture the display state rather than isolating one application.

A menu closes before capture
Open Snipping Tool first, then open the menu and begin its capture flow. For an open-menu capture, try the documented Ctrl + PrtSc sequence.
The keyboard has no visible Print Screen label
Use Windows + Shift + S, which works without a dedicated Print Screen key. You can also try Microsoft’s documented Fn + Windows + Space bar alternative for a full-screen capture.

If what you actually need is a repeatable screenshot of a website rather than a picture of your XPS 14 desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and lets you turn each cleanup step off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL request captures Stripe as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
