On a Dell XPS 13 running Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool, choose a capture mode, and select what you want to copy. For a full-screen image saved automatically as a file, press Windows+PrtScn. Use Alt+PrtScn when you need only the active window copied to the clipboard.
The best shortcut depends on the result you need: a selected region, one window, or the entire display. The methods below follow Microsoft’s Windows guidance, not a Dell-only utility.
Choose the right screenshot method

- Arrange the XPS 13 display so the content you want is visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. A Snipping Tool toolbar appears at the top of the screen.
- Choose the mode you need: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area. For a window snip, select the window. For a full-screen snip, let Windows capture the display.
- Windows copies the result to the clipboard and normally shows a notification. Select the notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- In Snipping Tool, annotate if required, then use its save command. You can also paste the clipboard image directly into an email, document, chat, or image editor with Ctrl+V.
This is the most flexible option when you need to exclude taskbars, neighboring windows, or private information. The overlay also avoids having to identify the Print Screen key on a particular XPS 13 keyboard.

Rectangular versus freeform snips
Use rectangular mode for a clean, predictable box around a dialog, web section, or product image. Freeform mode lets you outline an irregular shape. Both initially place the capture on the clipboard, so save it from Snipping Tool or paste it into another application before moving on.
Window and full-screen modes
Window mode targets one open window without manually tracing its edges. Full-screen mode captures the entire display through the Snipping Tool workflow; it is different from Windows+PrtScn because the Snipping Tool result is first presented for editing or saving rather than being silently written to the Screenshots folder.
Save the entire display with Windows+PrtScn
- Press Windows+PrtScn together.
- Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots (the Windows path is
PicturesScreenshots). - Open the newest image, rename it, move it, or attach it as needed.
This is the quickest choice when you want a file immediately and do not need to crop or annotate first. Microsoft identifies PicturesScreenshots as the destination in its screen-copy guidance.

- Click the window you want so it has focus.
- Press Alt+PrtScn. Windows copies that window’s contents to the clipboard.
- Open the destination app and press Ctrl+V.
- Use the destination app’s own save or export command to create a file.
Unlike Windows+PrtScn, this shortcut does not place a file in PicturesScreenshots by itself. If the pasted image is not what you expected, return to the target window and click its title bar before repeating the shortcut.

What if your XPS 13 has no PrtScn key?
XPS 13 keyboards vary by generation, region, and layout, so there is no single Print Screen key location that applies to every model. Inspect the legends printed on your keyboard. If there is no dedicated key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar as an alternative for print-screen capture; see the Microsoft Print Screen shortcut page.
You can also bypass the key-location question entirely with Windows+Shift+S. That shortcut opens Snipping Tool on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations regardless of where a physical Print Screen legend appears.
Change what the PrtScn key does
Pressing PrtScn alone is not identical on every Windows setup. Microsoft says its behavior can be changed at Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Depending on that setting, PrtScn may copy a full-screen image or open screen snipping. If the key starts an unexpected action, check that path and use the explicit Windows+Shift+S, Windows+PrtScn, or Alt+PrtScn shortcut that matches your goal.

Look in Pictures > Screenshots. Sort by date modified if several captures are present. This is the automatic file location documented by Microsoft.

Check the notification area for the Snipping Tool notification, select it, and save from the editor. Until you save it, the initial result is available through the clipboard and the Snipping Tool notification rather than as an automatically named file in the Screenshots folder.
It was made with Alt+PrtScn
Paste with Ctrl+V into an app that accepts images. This shortcut copies the active window; it does not automatically create a file.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears after Windows+Shift+S
- Press all three keys together and release them; do not hold a modifier while waiting for a separate Print Screen key.
- Look for the Snipping Tool toolbar at the top edge of the display and select a mode before dragging.
- If the shortcut still does not open the overlay, launch Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu and use its capture control.
The result is not in PicturesScreenshots
That folder is the automatic destination for Windows+PrtScn, not for every screenshot method. Windows+Shift+S and Alt+PrtScn start with a clipboard image. Open the Snipping Tool notification or paste into another app, then save from there.

Alt+PrtScn captured the wrong window
Alt+PrtScn uses the active window. Click the intended window’s title bar to focus it, then repeat the shortcut. If another window remains active, its image is what Windows will copy.

PrtScn opens snipping instead of copying the screen
Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Windows allows the Print Screen behavior to be changed, so use Windows+PrtScn for a direct file or Windows+Shift+S for the Snipping Tool overlay.
You cannot find a Print Screen label
Do not assume every XPS 13 generation uses the same key position. Read the legends on your particular keyboard, try the documented Fn+Windows+Space alternative, or use Windows+Shift+S, which does not require a dedicated PrtScn key.
Which method should you use?
- Need to mark up or crop a portion: Windows+Shift+S, then open the notification in Snipping Tool.
- Need a full-display file with the fewest steps: Windows+PrtScn.
- Need one application window in a report: Alt+PrtScn, then Ctrl+V in the report or image app.
- Unsure which key is Print Screen: Windows+Shift+S avoids model-specific key placement.
These built-in Windows methods require no purchase. The cited Microsoft instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; they do not establish the same shortcuts for an XPS 13 running another operating system.
