The shortcut depends on your device. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S for a selected area or PrtScn for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard. On a Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the entire display, Shift-Command-4 for a selection, or Shift-Command-5 for capture controls. On a Chromebook, press its Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. iPhone and Android use physical-button combinations rather than computer keyboard shortcuts.
Choose the shortcut by capture type

Use the full-screen command when you need everything visible, a selection command to avoid exposing unrelated content, and window mode when documenting one application. Save destinations and clipboard behavior vary by platform and settings.
Windows keyboard shortcuts
Capture part of the screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- When the snipping overlay appears, choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture as available.
- Drag over the area or select the window. The result is placed in the clipboard and a notification opens the Snipping Tool editor.
- Paste with Ctrl+V into an email, document, chat, or image editor, or use the editor’s save command.
Capture the whole screen
Press PrtScn. Windows normally copies the full display to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl+V. On some systems, Print Screen is configured to open screen snipping instead. Open Windows Settings and search for the Print Screen shortcut setting to change that behavior.

Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. Select rectangle, freeform, window, or full-screen mode, then capture and save from the editor. Current Windows versions automatically save Snipping Tool captures to a Screenshots folder according to the app’s configured behavior. In Snipping Tool settings, review or change automatic saving and the destination if your files are not where expected.

Do not confuse shortcuts: Windows+Shift+R starts a video snip, not a still screenshot.
Mac keyboard shortcuts
Capture the entire screen
Press Shift-Command-3. macOS saves the image to the desktop by default. Hold Control as well if you want the screenshot copied to the clipboard instead of saved as a file, then paste with Command+V.
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Drag the crosshair over the area you want.
- Release the trackpad or mouse button to capture.
- Hold Control during the shortcut if you need a clipboard copy.
Capture one window or menu
Press Shift-Command-4, press Space when the crosshair appears, and click the target window. This captures the window rather than an arbitrary rectangle.
Open the Screenshot control panel
Press Shift-Command-5. The panel provides full-screen, window, and selected-area capture, screen recording, a timer, pointer options, and a save-location control. Apple describes this command as opening Screenshot and displaying its tools. Use the panel when you need a delay, a different destination, or recording rather than a still image.

To customize combinations, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots (the exact label can vary by macOS release). If a shortcut does nothing, check for a conflicting app shortcut or a keyboard layout that changes the symbols.
Chromebook keyboard shortcuts
Use the Screenshot key
On keyboards with a dedicated Screenshot key, press it and choose full-screen, partial, or window capture in the toolbar.
Use the standard key combination
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. The Show windows key is the rectangle beside the brightness controls on most Chromebook keyboards.
- Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture.
- Confirm the selection. ChromeOS copies the image to the clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default.
Open the capture settings to change the save folder. If an external keyboard lacks Show windows, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5 as the fallback. Chromebook tablet mode uses Power+Volume Down; keyboard guidance is intended for standard English QWERTY keyboards.

iPhone and Android: use hardware buttons
iPhone
On an iPhone without a Home button, quickly press and release Side+Volume Up together. On models with a Home button, press and release Home+Side. The image appears in Photos, where you can crop, mark up, share, or delete it.

Android
Press Power+Volume Down together. If that fails, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot. Controls differ among manufacturers and Android editions, so consult the phone maker’s instructions when neither method works. On Android 12 and later, devices that support it offer a Capture more or scrolling-screenshot option for eligible scrolling screens.
Where the screenshot went
- Windows: PrtScn copies the image; paste it before copying something else. Snipping Tool’s automatic file location is controlled by its settings and may be the Screenshots folder.
- Mac: files go to the desktop by default unless Shift-Command-5’s save-location control was changed. Adding Control copies instead.
- Chromebook: captures are copied and normally saved in Downloads; capture settings can change the folder.
- iPhone: open Photos and look in Screenshots or Recents.
- Android: open the Photos or Gallery app and its Screenshots album; the exact app depends on the manufacturer.
Clipboard versus saved file
A clipboard capture is temporary: paste it immediately into the destination you need. A saved capture remains available for attachments, editing, or later reference. Windows PrtScn and Chromebook capture provide clipboard access; Mac does so when you hold Control. If you need both, paste the clipboard image into an editor and save a second copy.
Troubleshooting shortcuts
Nothing happens when I press the keys
- Use the platform’s modifier keys exactly: Windows uses the Windows logo key; Mac uses Command, not Control; Chromebook uses Ctrl and Show windows.
- On compact or laptop keyboards, hold Fn with PrtScn or another function-layer key.
- Disconnect or close keyboard-remapping utilities and screen-recording tools that may reserve the shortcut.
- On managed work or school devices, an administrator policy may disable capture.
The screenshot is black or incomplete
Protected video, banking software, virtual machines, and hardware-accelerated content can block capture. Try the application’s own export function, disable hardware acceleration only if your organization’s policy permits it, or capture a different, non-protected screen.
The image is not in the expected folder
Check the platform’s screenshot settings rather than assuming a universal path. On Windows review Snipping Tool settings; on Mac open Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options; on Chromebook inspect capture settings. Clipboard-only captures will not create a file until you paste and save them.

The wrong monitor was captured
For multi-display setups, use a region or window capture so you can identify the target, or capture each display separately. A full-screen command may include the active display or all displays depending on operating-system configuration.
The shortcut conflicts with another action
Change the screenshot shortcut in macOS Keyboard settings or Windows keyboard/accessibility settings where available. On Chromebooks, use the dedicated Screenshot key or the external-keyboard fallback.
