The shortcut depends on your operating system. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S to select a region, window, full screen, or freeform area. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-3 for the entire display, Shift-Command-4 for a selection, or add Space after Shift-Command-4 to capture a window. In GNOME, press Print to open the screenshot tool, Alt+Print for a window, or Shift+Print for the entire screen.
Choose whether you need the whole screen, one window, or a smaller region before capturing. The sections below show exactly what each shortcut does, where the image is saved, how to copy it instead, and what to do when a shortcut fails.
Choose the capture you need
| Need | Windows 10/11 | macOS | GNOME |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entire screen | Print Screen copies it to the clipboard; Windows+Shift+S, then choose full screen, opens the capture overlay. | Shift-Command-3 saves the display. | Shift+Print captures the entire screen. |
| One window or menu | Windows+Shift+S, choose Window, then select it. | Shift-Command-4, press Space, then click the window or menu. | Alt+Print captures a window. |
| Rectangular or freeform area | Windows+Shift+S, then Rectangle or Freeform. | Shift-Command-4, then drag. | Press Print and choose Area in the screenshot tool. |
| Copy rather than save | Print Screen or Ctrl+C in Snipping Tool. | Hold Control with a screenshot shortcut. | Use the screenshot tool’s copy-to-clipboard option. |
The built-in tools are sufficient for ordinary monitor captures. A screenshot is a still image; Windows+Shift+R, where available, opens video snipping and is a recording feature instead.

Capture a selected area, window, or full screen
- Press Windows logo key+Shift+S. A Snipping Tool overlay appears at the top of the screen.
- Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- For Rectangle or Freeform, drag around the content. For Window, click the window you want. Full screen captures the display immediately.
- Open the notification preview to edit the image. Press Ctrl+C to copy the snip or Ctrl+S to save it.
Use Snipping Tool’s delay setting when you need to expose a menu, tooltip, or other temporary item before the capture occurs. The shortcut and Snipping Tool workflow apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the visual layout can vary with updates.

Capture the entire screen directly
Press Print Screen (sometimes labelled PrtSc or PrtScn). Windows places a full-screen image on the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, a document, or another image editor with Ctrl+V, then save from that application.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar as an alternative on supported hardware. If that combination does nothing, use Windows+Shift+S instead.
Find saved Windows screenshots
When Windows saves a screenshot as a file, look in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. A snip that was only copied to the clipboard will not appear there until you paste and save it.

Capture part of the screen
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag over the area you want.
- Release the pointer to capture it. Press Escape while dragging to cancel.
Capture a window or menu
- Open the menu or window.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the target window or menu.
This method captures the selected window, including its normal shadow. If an application blocks window capture, use a permitted region capture or the application’s own export function. Apple notes that some apps, such as the Apple TV app, may not let you take screenshots of their windows.
Use the Screenshot app (macOS Mojave 10.14 or later)
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar. Select the entire screen, a window, or a portion, then open Options to set a timer, choose a save location, show the pointer, or keep a floating thumbnail. The default location remains the desktop unless you change it.
To copy instead of saving, hold Control while using Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4. You can also use the floating thumbnail’s clipboard action. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Screenshot options can offer SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF capture format; this is optional and does not change the basic shortcuts.
GNOME Linux
Use the screenshot tool
- Press Print to open GNOME’s screenshot interface.
- Choose Area, Screen, or Window.
- Select the target and capture it.
For shortcuts, press Alt+Print to capture a window or Shift+Print to capture the entire screen. GNOME saves shortcut captures in your home folder under Pictures/Screenshots. The tool also provides a copy-to-clipboard action when you need to paste the image into another application.

These instructions are for GNOME, not every Linux desktop environment. KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, and distribution-specific tools can use different shortcuts and save locations.
Save, copy, and share the image
Save as a file
Saving creates a reusable PNG or other image file that you can attach, archive, edit, or upload. On Windows, use Ctrl+S in Snipping Tool or save after pasting a Print Screen capture. On macOS, the default desktop file can be moved or renamed. In GNOME, shortcut files appear in Pictures/Screenshots.
Copy to the clipboard
Clipboard capture is fastest for a support ticket or chat message. It does not create a permanent file: paste it immediately into the destination, or save it from an image editor if you need a copy later. Windows uses Print Screen or Snipping Tool’s Ctrl+C; macOS uses Control with the screenshot shortcut; GNOME exposes copying in its screenshot interface.
Protect information before sharing
Inspect the image for passwords, private messages, authentication codes, personal addresses, browser tabs, and confidential documents. Recapture a smaller region or obscure sensitive details in an editor before uploading. A full-screen image can include notifications that were not part of the problem you intended to show.

Multiple monitors and display selection
Full-screen behavior varies with the operating system, display arrangement, and current capture mode. The documented shortcuts provide full-screen, window, and region workflows but do not establish one cross-platform shortcut that always captures exactly one monitor. On a multi-monitor setup, open the interactive capture interface, select the intended screen or region, and verify the preview before saving. A window capture is often safer when you need content from only one application.

Nothing happens
- Confirm that you are using the instructions for Windows, macOS, or GNOME rather than another desktop environment.
- Press the modifier keys together: Windows logo, Shift, and S; or Shift, Command, and the number on a Mac.
- On a laptop, check whether the function layer is required for Print Screen. On supported Windows hardware without PrtScn, try Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar.
- In GNOME, open the keyboard-shortcut settings. Defaults may have been customized by you or by a distribution.
The image is not where expected
Check the platform’s default: Windows uses Pictures/Screenshots for saved screenshots, macOS uses the desktop, and GNOME uses Pictures/Screenshots. A clipboard-only capture will not have a file until you paste and save it.
A menu disappears before capture
On Windows, set a delay in Snipping Tool. On macOS, open the Screenshot toolbar with Shift-Command-5 and choose a timer. For GNOME, use the screenshot tool while the target is visible, or capture the resulting window rather than relying on a transient menu.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A protected app shows a blank or blocked window
Some applications restrict screenshots for licensing or security reasons. Apple specifically identifies Apple TV as an example. Do not attempt to bypass a protection mechanism; use an approved export, share, or support function instead.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you really need is a screenshot of a website rather than the monitor image in front of you, ScreenshotNeo captures the page through one API request. It is not a replacement for the operating-system shortcuts above: it produces a clean, repeatable webpage image for scripts and services.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a screenshot without a Print Screen key?
Yes. Windows+Shift+S opens the Windows capture overlay, and macOS and GNOME provide their own keyboard shortcuts without requiring a dedicated Print Screen key.
How do I screenshot only one monitor?
There is no single documented shortcut that guarantees one-display capture across Windows, macOS, and GNOME. Use the platform’s interactive tool, select the intended display or region, and check the preview before saving.
What is the difference between a screenshot and a screen recording?
A screenshot is one still image. Windows+Shift+R opens Windows video snipping, which records motion instead of creating a single still frame.
