The quickest method on a Windows PC is to open WhatsApp Web, display the chat area you need, press Windows + Shift + S, select the conversation, and save the snip. WhatsApp Web runs in a desktop browser, so your computer’s built-in screenshot utility—not a WhatsApp setting—captures the image. The steps below cover a focused chat capture, a full-screen image, privacy checks, platform differences, and an API alternative.
Take a focused WhatsApp Web screenshot on Windows
- Open WhatsApp Web. Go to https://web.whatsapp.com in a desktop browser. On your phone, open WhatsApp, choose the linked-devices option, and scan the QR code shown in the browser. Follow the on-screen prompts until your chats load.
- Open the right conversation. Select the chat or screen you need. Scroll until every relevant message, timestamp, attachment, or banner is visible. Resize the browser window if that gives you a cleaner frame.
- Start Snipping Tool. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Select the capture mode. Rectangular snip is the best default for a chat. Drag around only the WhatsApp Web content you want. You can also choose window, full-screen, or freeform capture from the overlay.
- Save and inspect the image. Click the notification preview to open the snip, then use Save as and select PNG, JPEG, or another offered format. If you only need to paste it into a document, the capture is already on the clipboard; press Ctrl + V in the destination app.
Windows may also save captures automatically in the Screenshots folder under Snipping Tool’s current behavior. Check the saved file rather than assuming the location, especially on a managed or customized PC.
When a rectangular snip is preferable
Select an area when you are sending a single message, documenting a support issue, or preserving a small exchange. It excludes browser tabs, bookmarks, desktop icons, and unrelated notifications, which reduces accidental disclosure and makes the image easier to read.

Use a window capture when you need the complete browser window, including context around the chat. Use full-screen capture only when the surrounding desktop or another application is genuinely part of the evidence. A full-screen image can expose open tabs, account names, notifications, and private files, so review it before sharing.

Save, crop, and redact before sharing
- Check the edges. Confirm that the first and last message you intended to show are not cut off.
- Remove unrelated content. Crop browser chrome, other tabs, bookmarks, and desktop areas that do not serve the purpose of the screenshot.
- Hide personal data. Conceal names, phone numbers, profile photos, addresses, order numbers, and message text that recipients do not need. Use an opaque drawing or redaction tool; a translucent highlight may still reveal text.
- Check notifications. Mail, calendar, and operating-system alerts can appear during a full-screen capture.
- Keep the original private. Store the unredacted file securely and share only the edited copy when possible.
Full-screen capture with Print Screen
For a complete display image, press PrtSc. Microsoft documents this as placing the snapshot in the clipboard. Open Paint, an image editor, or a document, press Ctrl + V, and save the pasted image. This method is fast, but it captures everything visible on the monitor, not just WhatsApp Web. Use Snipping Tool’s area or window mode when privacy or a clean presentation matters.
macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux
WhatsApp Web is available in a browser on operating systems other than Windows, but the official material used for this guide does not establish one current, universal screenshot shortcut for macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux. Use the built-in screenshot utility for your operating system and verify its current shortcut in that system’s documentation or help menu. The WhatsApp portion is unchanged: open https://web.whatsapp.com, link the phone with the QR code, open the chat, and frame the messages before capturing.
Browser versus desktop application
This guide concerns WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp separately lists a Windows desktop app for Windows 10.1 64-bit version 1903 or later and a Mac desktop app for macOS 11 or later. If you use one of those apps, select its window in your operating system’s screenshot tool; do not assume the Web instructions or browser controls are identical.

Cases that may not capture normally
View Once photos and videos
WhatsApp announced screenshot blocking for View Once messages on August 9, 2022, saying: “Now we’re enabling screenshot blocking for View Once messages for an added layer of protection.” View Once photos and videos are designed to disappear after they are opened. Do not promise that an ordinary screenshot shortcut will capture this media, and do not interpret screenshot blocking as making content impossible to record by every possible means. Respect the sender’s privacy and obtain permission before attempting to preserve sensitive media.
Locked chats
Locked chats are placed behind an additional privacy layer. WhatsApp’s help guidance says that unlocking a locked chat on WhatsApp Web requires first creating a secret code on an Android phone or iPhone. If a chat is not available in the Web interface, use the account owner’s authorized unlock process. Never try to bypass a lock or capture content you are not permitted to access.
Troubleshooting
The QR code will not link the account
Confirm that the phone has an internet connection, that you are scanning from WhatsApp’s linked-devices screen, and that the code has not expired. Reload WhatsApp Web to obtain a fresh code, then scan again. If the browser session is managed by an organization, a policy may block linking; ask the administrator rather than installing an unapproved extension.

The chat is blank or messages are missing
Wait for the conversation to finish loading, check the network connection, and scroll to the exact position before opening the screenshot overlay. A narrow browser window can also hide message text or attachments; widen it and capture again.

Try opening Snipping Tool from the Start menu and selecting New. On a managed computer, the shortcut or app may be disabled by policy. You can use PrtSc to copy the full screen, paste it into an editor, and crop it there.
The image is not where you expected
Open the Snipping Tool notification immediately after capture and use Save as to choose a known folder. Also check the Screenshots folder and your browser’s download location; a clipboard-only capture does not create a file until you paste and save it.

Text is unreadable
Capture at the browser’s normal or enlarged zoom, maximize the window, and select a smaller area that keeps message text large. Avoid repeatedly enlarging a low-resolution image after capture; recapturing at a larger display scale produces a clearer result.
A notification or private tab appears in the image
Crop the image, redact the exposed information, and retake the screenshot with Do Not Disturb enabled if appropriate. A rectangular snip around the chat prevents most unrelated content from entering the frame.
