The shortcut depends on your operating system: Windows uses PrtScn, macOS uses Shift-Command-3, and ChromeOS uses Ctrl+Show windows. The result differs—Windows copies the image, while macOS normally saves it and ChromeOS opens its capture workflow.
Whole-screen screenshot shortcuts at a glance
| Computer | Shortcut | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | PrtScn | A whole-screen image is copied to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, a document, an email, or a message to use or save it. |
| Mac | Shift-Command-3 | The entire screen is captured and normally saved to the desktop. |
| Chromebook | Ctrl+Show windows | ChromeOS takes a screenshot using its built-in capture function. |
These are direct whole-screen shortcuts, not a universal combination that works everywhere. Identify the operating system first, then use the matching row.
Windows: capture the entire display with PrtScn
What PrtScn does
On Windows, press PrtScn (also labeled Print Screen or PrtSc on some keyboards). Microsoft documents this key as taking a screenshot of the whole screen and copying it to the clipboard. It does not, by itself, create a PNG or JPEG file in a folder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the captured image
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it to appear.
- Press PrtScn.
- Open an app that accepts images, such as Paint, Word, an email composer, or a chat message.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard image.
- Save or send the image from that app. In Paint, for example, use the Save command to choose a file format and location.
If you expected a file to appear automatically, the clipboard result is the reason you cannot find one: Windows has captured the screen, but you still need to paste it somewhere that can save it.

When PrtScn opens a selection tool instead
Windows can be configured so the Print Screen key opens screen snipping rather than placing the complete image directly on the clipboard. If pressing PrtScn displays a region-selection interface, check the Windows setting for the Print Screen key and turn off the option that assigns it to screen snipping. The exact Settings wording can vary by Windows release, but it is the setting that controls whether Print Screen opens the snipping experience.
Do not confuse PrtScn with Windows+Shift+S
Windows+Shift+S opens the screen-snipping interface. Microsoft’s shortcut table describes it as a way to capture part of the screen; it is therefore not the direct whole-screen shortcut requested here. The snipping tool can offer a full-screen mode after it opens, but that requires choosing a mode in the tool rather than taking the whole desktop immediately with one key.
Mac: save the full display with Shift-Command-3
Default behavior
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire Mac screen. macOS normally saves the resulting screenshot to the desktop, so look there after the shutter or capture feedback appears. If your Mac has more than one display or a customized screenshot destination, check the resulting desktop and the destination configured for screenshots.

Copy to the clipboard instead of saving
Hold Control with the same shortcut: Control-Shift-Command-3. This places the full-screen image on the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor, document, email, or message with Command-V. This is useful when you want to send the capture immediately and do not need a file on the desktop.
Mac screenshot limitations
Some applications can block screenshots of their windows. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may prevent a window from being captured. If a particular app produces a blank or protected result while other desktop content captures normally, the restriction may belong to that app rather than to the keyboard shortcut.
Chromebook: use Ctrl+Show windows
Immediate screenshot
Press Ctrl+Show windows. The Show windows key is the rectangular key on a Chromebook’s top row that displays the open-window overview. ChromeOS uses this combination for a screenshot of the screen.

Open the capture controls
When you need to choose between a full-screen, partial, or window capture, press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. ChromeOS opens its capture toolbar. Select the full-screen option there when you want the entire display, or choose another mode when the whole screen would include unrelated content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExternal keyboards and alternate keys
An external keyboard may not have a Show windows key. Google’s Chromebook instructions document Ctrl+Shift+F5 for opening the capture interface in that situation. Some Chromebook models also include a dedicated Screenshot key; if yours does, it can open the same capture controls without relying on the Chromebook-specific top-row key.
A reliable three-step method
- Identify the platform. Confirm whether the computer runs Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. The names and positions of keys differ between them.
- Choose direct capture or controls. Use the whole-screen shortcut when you want an immediate capture. Use the Windows or Chromebook chooser when you need to select a mode; on Mac, add Control only when the destination should be the clipboard.
- Confirm the result. On Windows, paste the clipboard contents into an app. On macOS, look for the saved image on the desktop unless you held Control. On ChromeOS, follow the capture toolbar or the system’s normal screenshot notification to open or save the image.
Troubleshooting common shortcut problems
Nothing seems to happen on Windows
- Press PrtScn once, then immediately paste with Ctrl+V into Paint or another image-capable app. The capture is normally in the clipboard, not in a folder.
- If a selection overlay appears, the Print Screen key has probably been assigned to screen snipping. Change that Print Screen behavior in Windows settings if you want the direct clipboard capture.
- If the key is combined with another function on a laptop, look for the keyboard’s Fn modifier or a secondary label such as PrtSc. The exact key arrangement is manufacturer-specific.
A Mac screenshot is missing
- Look on the desktop after using Shift-Command-3. macOS normally stores the file there.
- If you used Control-Shift-Command-3, there will be no new desktop file because the image was copied to the clipboard. Paste it with Command-V.
- If only one protected application fails while the rest of the desktop works, check whether that app blocks screenshots. Apple lists Apple TV as an example of an app that may do so.
The Chromebook shortcut does not work
- Make sure you are pressing the Chromebook’s Show windows key, not a similarly shaped key on a conventional keyboard.
- Use Ctrl+Shift+Show windows to open the capture toolbar and choose full-screen capture.
- With an external keyboard that lacks Show windows, use Google’s documented Ctrl+Shift+F5 alternative.
- If your Chromebook has a dedicated Screenshot key, press it to open the capture controls.
The result is not a whole-screen image
On Windows, this usually means Windows+Shift+S or a Print Screen assignment opened the snipping interface. On ChromeOS, a partial or window mode was selected in the toolbar. Choose the full-screen mode explicitly. On macOS, Shift-Command-3 is already the full-display command; a protected application can still limit what appears in its own window.

Choosing between a saved file, clipboard image, and chooser
| Need | Best option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Save a complete Mac screenshot immediately | Shift-Command-3 | macOS normally writes the image to the desktop. |
| Paste a complete Windows screenshot into another app | PrtScn | The whole screen goes to the clipboard. |
| Paste a complete Mac screenshot instead of saving it | Control-Shift-Command-3 | The Control modifier changes the destination to the clipboard. |
| Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture on ChromeOS | Ctrl+Shift+Show windows | It opens the capture controls and their mode choices. |
| Use a Chromebook with an external keyboard lacking Show windows | Ctrl+Shift+F5 | Google documents this combination for opening capture. |
Or skip the browser setup
The keyboard methods above capture your computer’s physical display. If what you actually need is a clean image of a webpage for documentation, testing, previews, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server rather than a desktop shortcut. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF of a URL.
It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

What this guide does not standardize
There is no single keyboard shortcut that applies to every operating system. The procedures here are based on the official Windows, Apple, and Chromebook instructions. Linux desktops can assign different shortcuts depending on the distribution and desktop environment, so use the documentation for the specific Linux environment rather than assuming one of the combinations above will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these shortcuts work the same way on every keyboard?
No. Laptop layouts may put Print Screen behind an Fn key, Chromebook external keyboards may lack Show windows, and Mac modifier keys are different from Windows keys. Use the operating-system shortcut and the key labels on your keyboard.
Can I use one shortcut for Windows, Mac, and Chromebook?
No. Whole-screen capture is implemented by each operating system, so the key combination and whether the result is saved or copied vary by platform.
