Open the Gmail message or screen you need, then use your device’s built-in screenshot control. On Android, press Power + Volume down together. On a Chromebook, press the Screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture.
Take a screenshot of Gmail on Android
- Open Gmail and display the inbox, message, attachment, or other screen you want in the image.
- Press Power and Volume down at the same time. Hold them briefly and release together.
- Use the thumbnail or preview that appears to open, crop, annotate, or share the screenshot.
If that shortcut does not work, press and hold the Power button for a few seconds, then tap Screenshot in the power menu. Button layouts and menus vary by manufacturer, so consult your phone or tablet maker’s instructions if neither method is available.
Find the Gmail screenshot
On devices with Google Photos, open Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On devices without Photos, open the Gallery app and look for its Screenshots folder. From there you can rename, edit, attach, or delete the image.
Capture a long Gmail message
Android 12 and later supports scrolling screenshots on most screens that allow scrolling. Take the normal screenshot, tap Capture more, and drag the crop guides until the required portion of the email is included. Tap the save control when the selection is complete. The option is not available on every device or every scrollable view; if Capture more does not appear, take several ordinary screenshots or use Gmail’s print option instead.

Take a screenshot of Gmail on a Chromebook
- Open Gmail and position the inbox or message exactly as you want it captured.
- Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key, if your keyboard has one.
- If there is no dedicated key, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines. You can also open Settings > Screen capture to start the capture controls.
- Choose one of the capture modes: Full screen, Partial screen, or Window. For a partial capture, drag around the Gmail area; for a window capture, select the Gmail window.
- Confirm the capture. Chromebook copies the image to the clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default.
You can paste the copied image directly into a document, chat, or image editor. To use another folder, change the save location in the Screen capture settings before capturing.
External keyboards
An external keyboard may not include the Show windows key. Google’s Chromebook instructions provide Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative shortcut in that situation. If it still does not open the toolbar, use Settings > Screen capture and select the capture mode there.
Choose the right capture mode
| Situation | Android | Chromebook |
|---|---|---|
| One visible message or inbox view | Power + Volume down | Window or full-screen capture |
| Only a selected part of Gmail | Take a screenshot, then crop in the preview or Photos/Gallery | Partial screen capture |
| A long, scrollable email | Capture more on Android 12+ where supported | Capture successive sections, or use print for a document-style copy |
| Where the file goes | Photos’ Screenshots collection or the Gallery Screenshots folder | Downloads by default; save location is configurable |
Privacy and confidential-mode limits
Gmail’s confidential mode can restrict a recipient’s ability to copy, print, download, or forward message text and attachments. It does not prevent screenshots or photographs. Google Gmail Help states: “While confidential mode can help prevent recipients from accidentally sharing emails, they can still take screenshots or photos of your emails.” Treat a screenshot as a copy that may be retained or shared even when the original message has an expiration date.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Before sharing, check that the image does not expose addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, recovery codes, or other private content.
- Crop unrelated inbox rows and notification banners.
- Use the built-in markup tools to redact sensitive text, but remember that drawing over text is not always secure if the original image remains available.
- Store screenshots in a protected folder and delete temporary copies after you finish.
Printing Gmail instead of taking a screenshot
Use printing when you need a paper copy or a paginated document rather than a bitmap image. On a computer, open the email, click More (the three-dot menu), and choose Print. Confidential mode may prevent printing message text and attachments.

On an Android phone or tablet, Gmail can print a message or conversation if a printer can receive data over Wi-Fi or a mobile network. Printing is a separate workflow; it does not create a screenshot file.
Why the screenshot shortcut may fail
Power + Volume down does nothing
- Press both buttons at exactly the same time rather than holding one first.
- Try the Power-button menu and tap Screenshot.
- Remove a case that prevents one button from being fully pressed.
- If the controls are still unavailable, follow the device manufacturer’s screenshot instructions.
The Android scrolling option is missing
Capture more requires Android 12 or later and a screen that supports scrolling screenshots. Some Gmail views, embedded documents, or managed devices may not expose it. Capture several sections, open the message on another supported device, or print it.
The Chromebook toolbar does not appear
- Use Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, or Ctrl + Shift + F5 with an external keyboard.
- Open Settings > Screen capture and launch the controls manually.
- Check that another app is not intercepting the keyboard shortcut.
The image is not where expected
Android stores captures in Photos’ device Screenshots collection or the Gallery Screenshots folder. Chromebook saves to Downloads by default and copies the image to the clipboard. Check the configured save folder in Chromebook Screen capture settings.

Wait for Gmail images and attachments to finish loading before capturing. For a very long message, scroll in stages and capture each section. A screenshot records only what is rendered on screen; it does not recover content that Gmail has not loaded.

Automate Gmail or website captures with ScreenshotNeo
Manual device capture is best for a message you are viewing. For repeatable website screenshots, an API can open a URL and return an image or PDF without setting up a browser. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
These examples capture a public page. Replace the URL with a page you are authorized to access; a Gmail account page normally requires authentication and should not be exposed through a public URL.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const body = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', body);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Cost and failed-page handling
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; annual billing provides two months free. Every feature is included on every plan. A clean capture is the billable result, while the failure and cache cases described above are not.
Or skip the browser setup
With one API call, ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and an MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude or Cursor call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. You get 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
What this guide covers
The documented workflows here are for Android phones and tablets and ChromeOS. Exact iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows shortcuts are not included because the cited Google instructions do not establish those controls; use the screenshot instructions for your specific Apple or Microsoft device when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Gmail confidential mode stop someone from taking a screenshot?
No. Confidential mode can limit copying, printing, downloading, and forwarding, but recipients can still take screenshots or photos.
Can I screenshot an entire Gmail conversation at once?
On Android 12 and later, use Capture more when the Gmail view supports scrolling screenshots. Otherwise capture several sections or print the conversation.
Where does a Chromebook Gmail screenshot save?
It is copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads by default. Screen capture settings let you change the save folder.
