To capture a web page that extends below the browser window, use Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command. Open the page in Chrome, open DevTools, enable Device Mode, choose More options in the Device Mode toolbar, and select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome downloads one image containing content outside the visible viewport.
macOS’s normal screenshot shortcuts capture the display, a window, or a visible selection; they do not automatically scroll through a long webpage. Safari can save a page as a Web Archive or HTML source, but those files are not screenshot images.
Choose the result you actually need

The distinction matters: “entire screen” means the pixels currently displayed by your Mac, while “entire webpage” means the document’s full scrollable height.

Chrome’s DevTools full-size command is the clearest built-in Mac workflow for a scrolling webpage. It captures the page beyond the viewport rather than merely taking a picture of the browser window.

- Open the page. Load the URL in Google Chrome and wait until the visible content has finished rendering.
- Open DevTools. Use Chrome’s developer-tools menu to open DevTools. The exact browser-level shortcut can vary with your keyboard settings and Chrome version, so the menu is the dependable route.
- Turn on Device Mode. In DevTools, activate the device emulation toolbar. The page will appear in a responsive viewport.
- Open More options. In the Device Mode toolbar, open the menu labeled More options.
- Capture the page. Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome downloads the resulting image, normally to your configured Downloads folder.
Chrome’s documented description is explicit: the command captures the whole page, including content that is not visible in the viewport. If the downloaded image is not where you expect, check Chrome’s download location and the download shelf or history.
Do not confuse full-size and area screenshots
Command-Shift-P opens the DevTools Command Menu. Chrome’s Command Menu includes an area screenshot action, which lets you select a region. That is different from the Device Mode menu’s Capture a full size screenshot command. Use the latter when you need the complete scrollable document.
Before you capture
- Close obstructive cookie notices, newsletter dialogs, chat bubbles, and other overlays if they cover page content.
- Scroll through the page once if it loads important sections only after interaction or scrolling.
- Check that fonts, images, and embedded components have finished loading.
- For a responsive design, set the Device Mode width that best represents the layout you want to document.
When the normal Mac screenshot shortcuts are enough
Use these shortcuts when you need the visible screen rather than a scrolling webpage:

- Shift-Command-4: lets you drag around a visible portion of the screen.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: captures a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: opens the Screenshot controls, where you can choose the capture mode, timer, save location, pointer visibility, and thumbnail behavior.
These commands do not scroll a browser page automatically. If the page is taller than the display, the resulting image contains only what was visible at capture time (or the selected window/area).

macOS Tahoe 26 and HDR captures
Apple’s current Screenshot guidance says that, on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot can offer SDR capture as PNG and HDR capture as HEIF. Those format choices affect the ordinary screen-capture workflow; they do not turn Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-5 into a scrolling webpage tool.
Safari: save the page instead of taking a screenshot
Safari provides a useful alternative when your goal is an offline or reusable copy rather than a single image. Choose File → Save As, then select one of the available page formats:
- Web Archive: preserves page graphics and links in an archive. Links continue to work as long as their destination pages remain available.
- Page Source: saves the page’s HTML source code.
Neither option produces a full-page screenshot image. Some webpages may prevent Safari from saving items that appear on the page. Choose Chrome’s full-size screenshot when you need a PNG, JPEG, or other image for documentation, review, or sharing.

Dynamic pages, lazy loading, and completeness
A full-size command can capture the document’s full layout, but no browser command can guarantee that every site has already generated every piece of content. Pages may fetch data after a delay, require a click, or insert images only when a section approaches the viewport. For the most complete result:

- Wait for the page’s initial network activity and visible loading indicators to finish.
- Accept or dismiss consent dialogs and close overlays that obscure content.
- Scroll through long sections so scroll-triggered components have a chance to load.
- Expand accordions, tabs, or “load more” controls if those items belong in the record.
- Capture again after the final state is visible.
If the site changes while you capture, the image may represent a mixture of states. For legal, compliance, or archival work, record the URL and capture time alongside the image.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot is only one screen tall
You probably used Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-5, or a window capture. Repeat the Chrome Device Mode workflow and select Capture a full size screenshot, not an area screenshot.
I cannot find “Capture a full size screenshot”
Confirm that Device Mode is enabled and that you opened More options in its toolbar. DevTools labels can change between Chrome releases; if the menu differs, consult Chrome’s current DevTools documentation and look specifically for the full-size screenshot action.

The image contains a cookie banner or chat widget
Dismiss the banner or widget before capturing. If the control is fixed to the viewport, it may appear repeatedly or cover content in the result; close it and capture again.
Images or sections are blank
Give the page more time, scroll through it, and retry. This commonly occurs when content is lazy-loaded, depends on JavaScript, or is blocked by a failed network request. Expand collapsed sections manually when necessary.

The page is extremely wide or very tall
Choose an appropriate Device Mode width before capture. A very wide layout can create an unwieldy image; for documentation, a narrower responsive breakpoint may be easier to read. For very long pages, consider saving the image in an image editor or splitting it into documented sections after capture.
Safari saved a file, but it is not an image
That is expected for Web Archive and Page Source. Open the file in Safari for viewing or inspect the HTML source; use Chrome’s full-size screenshot command when an image is required.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
For an occasional manual capture, Chrome is free and immediate. Its result depends on the page’s current browser state, loaded resources, viewport, and interactive elements. An API is more useful when you need the same URL captured on a schedule, from code, at several viewport sizes, or as a PDF.
