To capture a specific image from a YouTube video, open the video on a computer, click the player, move to the moment you need, press K to pause, and use comma or period to step backward or forward one frame. Press F for a larger full-screen view, then use your operating system’s screenshot shortcut to capture the video area. On a phone, pause and compose the frame, then use the normal screenshot button combination for that device.
The result is a screenshot of what is displayed, not an original video frame file. Browser controls, captions, page margins or other overlays can be included unless you capture only the player region and crop the result.
Choose the capture method that fits your device

Use a desktop region capture when you need only the player. Use a phone screenshot when the video is already composed correctly on a mobile display. If exact timing matters, use the desktop frame-step controls rather than trying to stop playback by eye.
Take a frame-accurate screenshot on Windows
- Open the video page. Navigate to the YouTube page containing the video, and click inside the player. YouTube’s current computer experience requires player focus before its keyboard shortcuts respond. See YouTube’s keyboard-shortcut documentation.
- Find the approximate moment. Drag the seek bar, or use J to move back 10 seconds, L to move forward 10 seconds, and the left or right arrows on the seek bar to move 5 seconds.
- Pause playback. Press K. If the key does nothing, click the player again and retry; typing in the browser address bar or another control means the player does not have focus.
- Choose the exact frame. While paused, press comma to step backward one frame or period to step forward one frame. Press repeatedly to compare adjacent frames and stop on the clearest expression, title card or action.
- Enlarge the player if useful. Press F to enter full-screen mode. YouTube documents scrolling back up in full screen to hide surrounding elements; moving the pointer away and waiting also lets transient controls disappear. Full screen enlarges the displayed image but does not create detail that is absent from the source video.
- Open Snipping Tool. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Select a rectangular region around the player, or choose a window or full-screen mode when that better matches your purpose. Microsoft documents these modes in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
- Save and inspect. Click the Snipping Tool notification, check the capture, then save it in the required format and location. Crop away browser chrome, captions or margins if they were included.
When controls remain visible
Controls may remain on a paused player because the pointer is over the video or a control has focus. Move the pointer outside the player and wait for temporary controls to fade. If a title, caption or other page element still overlaps the image, use a tighter Snipping Tool selection and crop the saved file. Do not rely on a universal “hide controls” key for every paused-video situation.

Take a frame-accurate screenshot on a Mac
- Open the YouTube page and click inside the player so the shortcuts have focus.
- Use the seek bar, J, L or the 5-second arrow controls to approach the desired time.
- Press K to pause, then use comma and period for one-frame adjustments.
- Press F for full screen if a larger player makes composition easier. Move the pointer away and wait for temporary controls to disappear.
- Press Shift + Command + 4, drag around the video, and release to capture that region. Press Shift + Command + 3 for the entire display, or Shift + Command + 5 to open macOS screenshot controls. Apple lists these options in Take a screenshot on Mac.
- Open the saved image, crop any unwanted page content, and rename or move it as needed.
Take a screenshot on Android
- Open the video in the YouTube app or mobile browser.
- Pause at the desired moment and adjust the seek bar. Mobile YouTube does not provide the desktop comma-and-period frame-step workflow, so compose the image as precisely as the touch controls allow.
- Press Power + Volume Down together. The exact animation, toolbar and save location depend on the device.
- Tap the screenshot preview or notification to crop away browser controls, the app interface or other parts of the display.
Google notes that Android screenshot controls can vary by manufacturer and model. If the documented combination does not work, consult the device maker’s instructions in addition to Android Help.
Take a screenshot on an iPhone
- Open the video, pause it, and position the playhead as carefully as possible.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, press the Side button + Volume Up at the same time.
- On an iPhone with a Home button, press Home + Side or Home + Top, depending on the model.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears to crop or mark up the image, or swipe it away to save it immediately. Apple’s model-specific combinations are listed in Take a screenshot on iPhone.
Capture only the video instead of the whole page
Desktop region capture
Region capture is normally the cleanest option: pause the player, move the pointer away, wait for controls to fade, and drag tightly around the video. Leave a small margin if the player edge is difficult to see, then crop precisely in the screenshot editor.
Full-screen capture
Full screen removes most surrounding page content and gives you a larger displayed player. It is useful when the video is small in the normal page layout, but the screenshot still represents the screen’s rendered size and may include a control bar if it appears at capture time.
Mobile cropping
Phone screenshots include the entire visible display, including status icons and YouTube navigation. Crop those areas after capture. The final dimensions are constrained by the phone’s screen, not by the video’s original upload resolution.

Handle captions, cards and end screens
Captions are part of the displayed player. Turn them off before pausing if they obscure the subject, or crop and edit the resulting screenshot only where that is appropriate for your use. A video’s end-screen cards can cover the final frames. YouTube announced a Hide button for dismissing end screens on the current video; it is an end-screen control, not a general method for hiding every player overlay. Why the screenshot looks wrong
The shortcut does nothing
Click the player first. YouTube’s keyboard shortcuts are context-sensitive in the current computer experience, so a focused address bar, seek bar or page element can intercept the key. Press K again after clicking the video.
The image is one or two frames early
Pause with K, then use period to advance one frame or comma to go back one. Repeat until motion blur, an open mouth or a transition is in the desired position.
The player is too small
Press F before capturing. If the browser does not enter full screen, use the player’s full-screen button and move the pointer away. A larger display can improve framing, but it cannot increase the source video’s encoded detail.

Browser chrome or controls are in the file
Use a rectangular desktop capture around the player, or crop the saved image. On mobile, crop the status bar and YouTube interface. Wait for controls to fade before invoking the screenshot shortcut.
The Android buttons do not work
Power-and-Volume-Down is the common combination documented by Google, but hardware layouts and customized software differ. Check the phone manufacturer’s support instructions for that model.
The screenshot is black or blank
Confirm that the video is visibly rendering before capturing, and try the operating system’s normal screenshot tool rather than a browser extension. If the page itself has not loaded, reload it and verify that playback works first.

- A screenshot records the pixels currently displayed. It is not a direct export of the YouTube source file.
- Full-screen playback and a high-density display can produce a larger capture, but scaling cannot restore detail lost through compression or a low-resolution upload.
- Pause before invoking capture. A moving video can produce a blurred frame even when the screenshot shortcut works correctly.
- Check the saved image at 100% size. Capturing the entire display and later enlarging a small player usually gives a less useful result than capturing a tightly framed player region.
- Keep the original capture until you have checked the crop, timing and readability of any text.
Automate a page screenshot instead
If your goal is a repeatable screenshot of a YouTube page rather than a manually selected video frame, an API can remove browser setup. Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube’s Hide button remove every overlay from a paused video?
No. YouTube documents Hide for end-screen elements on the current video. It is not a universal control for captions, playback controls, browser chrome or other page overlays.
Can an automated API select the exact frame I see after pressing comma or period?
Not from the page URL alone. Exact frame selection requires controlling playback timing in a browser or manually pausing and stepping through frames; a page screenshot API captures the rendered page state it receives.
