Pause the YouTube video on the frame you want, then use your device’s built-in screenshot command. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S and select the video area. On a Mac, use Screenshot controls or a screenshot shortcut. On iPhone or Android, use the phone’s standard screenshot controls; the exact buttons depend on the model.
YouTube’s creator tools explain how to set a custom thumbnail, but they do not provide a general frame-export button for arbitrary videos. A normal screen capture is therefore the practical method for saving a still image.
Before you capture: get the cleanest frame
- Open the YouTube video and move to the scene you need.
- Pause playback. Use the frame-step controls where available, or seek slightly backward and forward until the image is sharp.
- Wait for the playback controls, title bar, notifications and cursor to disappear. Moving the pointer away from the video can help.
- Use a selected-area capture instead of the whole screen when possible. This avoids browser tabs, bookmarks, chat messages and other private information.
- Save the image in your device’s screenshot folder or open it in the built-in editor to crop, annotate or share it.
A screenshot records the resolution currently rendered on your display. It cannot restore detail that is absent from a low-quality stream, a blurred frame or a small player.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture only the video
- Pause the video at the target frame.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool image overlay appears.
- Choose the rectangular snip mode and drag around the video frame.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to edit, save or share the capture.
This shortcut is for a still image. Do not confuse it with Windows+Shift+R, which opens video capture.

Capture the entire screen
Press PrtSc to copy a full-screen snapshot to the clipboard, then paste it into Paint or another image application and save it. Depending on your keyboard and Windows settings, you may need Fn+PrtSc on a laptop.
Windows troubleshooting
- No overlay: try the Start menu and open Snipping Tool directly, then choose New.
- Wrong area: press Esc and repeat the rectangular selection after the controls fade.
- Black or blank capture: reload the page, disable hardware-acceleration-related extensions temporarily, or try another browser. A protected app window may restrict capture.
Mac

- Pause the video.
- Press Shift+Command+4 and drag over the player. Release to capture.
- Find the image on the desktop by default, or open the thumbnail that briefly appears to mark up and share it.
Screenshot controls and full-screen capture
Press Shift+Command+5 to open macOS Screenshot controls. Choose to capture the entire screen, a window or a selected portion, then select Options for the save location and timer. A timer is useful when you need time to hide controls before the capture.
Some applications do not permit screenshots of their windows. If macOS reports that a window cannot be captured, try selecting the visible player area instead, or check the application’s permissions and restrictions.
iPhone
- Pause the video at the desired frame and wait for controls to disappear.
- Use the standard screenshot button combination for your iPhone model.
- Tap the thumbnail preview to crop or mark up the image, or leave it untouched.
- Open Photos to find the saved screenshot.
Button combinations vary between iPhone generations, so use Apple’s current iPhone screenshot instructions if you are unsure which buttons your model uses. If the preview is distracting, swipe it away; the image remains saved.

Android phones and tablets
- Pause the video on the frame you want.
- Use your device’s supported screenshot button combination or system screenshot action.
- Edit the preview if needed, then save.
- Look in the Screenshots album or your Photos app.
Android steps differ by manufacturer and Android version. If the usual method fails, consult the handset maker’s support instructions. Some devices also offer a quick-settings Screenshot tile, a palm gesture or a voice command.
Fix common quality and timing problems
Playback controls are in the image
Pause first, move the pointer away, and wait a moment. On a phone, tap an empty part of the player once and wait for the controls to fade before invoking the screenshot gesture.
The frame is soft or shows motion blur
Seek to a nearby moment and capture again. YouTube may display a different decoded frame after seeking, and a fast-moving scene can be blurred even when the video itself is high resolution.

Use Windows Snipping Tool, macOS selected-area capture or your phone’s crop editor. Turn on Do Not Disturb and close notifications before retrying.

The video will not display
Resolve the playback problem first: check the connection, reload YouTube and verify that the video is available in your region and account. A screenshot tool cannot capture a frame that never rendered.
You need many frames or a repeatable workflow
For occasional stills, built-in tools are sufficient. For a large set of URLs, scheduled captures or automated documentation, use an API rather than manually opening every video. Respect the video’s access controls and any terms that apply.

Making a screenshot for personal reference and publishing it in another work are different uses. YouTube says creators generally own copyright in original videos, while permission, Creative Commons terms, public-domain status and applicable exceptions may provide routes for reuse. Exceptions vary by country or region, and giving credit alone does not grant permission. If you plan to publish or reuse the image, check the creator’s permission or license and the copyright rules where you live.

Why is my screenshot black?
The player or application may restrict capture, or the page may not have rendered correctly. Reload, try another browser or capture the visible player area with a built-in tool.
Can I legally post a screenshot from someone else’s video?
Not automatically. Review the creator’s permission or license and the copyright exceptions that apply in your country; attribution alone is not permission.
Will an API capture the exact paused YouTube frame?
A URL-based screenshot captures the rendered page, not necessarily a chosen playback timestamp. Use a manual pause-and-capture workflow for frame precision.
