To screenshot a Wikipedia article, open it on your device, bring the part you want into view, then use your device’s screenshot controls. A standard screenshot captures what is visible on the screen—not automatically the whole article. For a longer capture, use Android’s scrolling-capture option where available; if you need a document of the article, use Wikipedia’s PDF option or your browser’s Print to PDF instead.
Choose the right kind of capture
Decide what you need before taking the shot: a visible portion as an image, a longer scrolling capture, or a document containing the article. The controls depend on the device and, in some cases, its operating-system version or model.

Take the screenshot on a computer
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open the Wikipedia article and scroll to the content you want to capture.
- For a selection or a particular window, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose a snip mode, and select the article area. Snipping Tool supports rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen snips.
- When the capture opens in Snipping Tool, edit it if needed, then use the save or share controls.
For a quick full-screen capture, press Print Screen. Depending on your settings, this may copy the image to the clipboard or open a selection overlay; follow the interface that appears. If the key does not behave as expected, use Snipping Tool. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
Mac
- Open the article and position it so the relevant text and enough identifying context are visible.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then drag around the browser content you want to include.
- To capture the whole screen instead, press Shift-Command-3.
For an article image, select the browser content rather than the whole desktop when possible; crop unrelated desktop details if necessary. MediaWiki’s screenshot guide recommends PNG for screenshots and documents these shortcuts: Help:Screenshots.

Take the screenshot on a phone
iPhone
- Open the Wikipedia article and scroll to the section you want.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up together.
- On a Touch ID model, quickly press and release the Side button and Home together, or use Top plus Home on a model with a top button.
- Tap the preview to crop or mark up the image, then save or share it. Screenshots are also available in Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.
Button combinations depend on the iPhone model. Apple’s instructions, current to iOS 26 and published June 3, 2026, are at Take a screenshot on your iPhone. Apple notes that iOS 18 and earlier show a temporary thumbnail after capture.
Android
- Open the article and display the section you want to capture.
- Try pressing Power and Volume Down together.
- If that does not work, hold Power and tap Screenshot.
- To capture more of a long page, look for Capture more after the first screenshot, then extend the selected area if the option is offered.
Google says scrolling capture is available on Android 12 and later for most screens that allow scrolling; it is not guaranteed for every device or screen. Check Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots, or look in your device’s Gallery on older setups. If neither button method works, Google advises checking the device maker’s support guidance. See Google’s Android screenshot help.
Capture a long article without confusing it with a screenshot
A normal screen capture records the screen or selected region at that moment. It will not include text farther down the article simply because the page is long. On Android 12 or later, Capture more may let you extend a screenshot of a supported scrollable screen. The feature and supported screens vary, so check the result rather than assuming it contains the entire article.

On Windows or Mac, you can capture separate sections as you scroll, but those are separate images unless you combine them yourself. If your actual goal is to keep or share the whole article in a readable document, use Wikipedia’s Tools menu and Download as PDF when available, or choose your browser’s print destination to save a PDF. Menu labels and availability can change. A PDF preserves a document layout; it is not an image screenshot.
Make the image clear and useful
- Include context. Keep the article title or section heading in frame when it helps another person identify what the screenshot shows.
- Crop deliberately. Remove unrelated tabs, desktop controls, or phone notifications, but do not crop away context needed to understand the excerpt.
- Check the result. Open the saved image and confirm text is readable and the intended passage is present before sharing it.
- Choose the right output. MediaWiki recommends PNG for screenshots. A PDF is more suitable when you need a document rather than a standalone image.
If you plan to republish the screenshot
A screenshot may contain Wikipedia text and images with licensing or attribution requirements. Wikimedia’s guidance is written primarily for creating and uploading screenshots to Wikimedia Commons; it recommends cropping to relevant content and notes that removing unnecessary logos, images, and text can make copyright status easier to determine. It also says that when a screenshot contains a significant amount of article text, credit the page authors in the upload form and use the {{Wikipedia-screenshot}} tag. This is not a complete rights determination for every external use: check the relevant licenses and requirements for the material and the place where you intend to publish it.

For browser-rendered captures, options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device presets, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicking an element, hiding selectors, waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. You can also set headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, and geolocation; configure PDF paper size, margins, landscape, and page ranges; and use transparent backgrounds, image resizing, caching TTL, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, the usage API, and OpenAPI spec. The screenshot shortcut does nothing
On Windows, open Snipping Tool directly if Print Screen is configured differently or copied an image without opening an editor. On Android, try the alternative Power-menu method; hardware combinations can vary by manufacturer. On iPhone, confirm which button layout your model has and press the buttons quickly together.
The screenshot shows only part of the article
That is expected from a standard screen capture. Scroll and take additional captures, try Android’s Capture more if supported, or save a PDF if you need the article as a longer document.

Android does not offer Capture more
Google specifies Android 12 or later and most scrollable screens, not every device or page. If the option is absent, capture the visible sections separately or use the PDF alternative.
The capture includes clutter or unreadable text
Reposition the article, select only the browser content or relevant region, and inspect the saved image. Crop unrelated interface details while preserving enough context to identify the article or passage.
You need a shareable complete article
Use Wikipedia’s PDF export when available, or browser Print to PDF. Do not label the resulting document a screenshot: it is a PDF alternative with a different format and purpose.

On iPhone, find it in Photos under Collections, Media Types, and Screenshots. On Android, check Photos under Collections and On this device, then Screenshots; older devices may use Gallery.
