For a quick full-page website screenshot, use Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot tool and choose Save full page. In Chrome, use DevTools Device Mode and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Pick full-page, visible-viewport, or cropped capture according to what you need to show, then check the saved image before adding it to your portfolio.
Choose the screenshot that tells the right story
A portfolio image should show the part of the work you want a viewer to understand. Choose the capture scope before you open the browser tool:
- Full page: Use this when the page’s structure, content hierarchy, or visual flow from top to bottom is important.
- Visible viewport: Use this when the key work fits on screen and you want a focused image without a long page.
- Selected area: Use this to highlight one component or detail, such as a navigation menu, hero section, or card layout.
These are presentation choices, not a claim that one kind of screenshot performs better in hiring. If a full-page capture becomes too tall to inspect comfortably, consider using a focused image or more than one view instead.

Firefox has a built-in screenshot tool for capturing the visible page, a selected area, or the full page. Mozilla’s support instructions, last updated June 15, 2026, document these steps:

- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty part of the page. On macOS, Control-click instead. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page for the entire page or Save visible for the current viewport. You can also select a region or a page part that Firefox highlights automatically.
- Save the image, then open the downloaded file and inspect it at a useful zoom level.
Mozilla’s instructions are at Firefox Screenshots support. If you need to capture an individual element or use Firefox Developer Tools, its Developer Tools screenshot guide describes full-page and element capture. The full-page screenshot icon may need to be enabled in Developer Tools settings; captures are saved to Downloads.
Capture a full page or cropped area in Chrome
Capture the whole webpage
- Open the webpage in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Switch DevTools to Device Mode.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome’s Device Mode documentation also describes Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. In Device-specific mode, a device frame can be included if it is shown before capture. That can help communicate a simulated device presentation, but it is different from a plain page capture.
Capture just one area
- Open the DevTools Command Menu.
- Type screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the area you want to include.
Chrome notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. See the DevTools Command Menu documentation. Browser menus can change; if a label is missing, use DevTools command search or the browser’s current help to find the equivalent command.

Check the image before you publish it
A browser screenshot is a record of what loaded at the time of capture, not necessarily a perfect representation of every visitor’s experience. Review the file at full size and check for:
- Content cut off at the top, bottom, or sides, especially if you captured only the viewport.
- Images, fonts, or page sections that had not finished loading.
- Sticky headers or overlays that cover important content in a full-page capture.
- Unexpected consent dialogs, chat widgets, or other popups obscuring the design.
- Personal information, account details, or browser UI that should not appear in a public portfolio.
If the shot misses a section, wait for the page to finish loading and capture again. For a portfolio case study, a useful caption can identify the browser view or viewport and whether the image shows a live site, a past design, a prototype, or your own redesign.

Represent the work and its ownership honestly
Make the status of the work clear. If you redesigned an existing site as a personal exercise, say that it is an independent redesign rather than implying that the site owner commissioned or approved it. Do not suggest endorsement unless you have permission to make that claim.

The browser command is missing
Menu labels and locations can move between browser versions. In Chrome, search for “screenshot” in the DevTools Command Menu; in Firefox, check the current browser help for the screenshot tool. For Chrome area capture, make sure DevTools is docked.

The full-page result is incomplete or awkward
Wait until the page has loaded before capturing and inspect the saved image. A page with sticky elements or content that loads as you scroll may need a fresh capture after loading. Firefox Developer Tools can capture the entire page, and Chrome Device Mode offers full-size capture; if the result still does not present well, use a viewport or area image that better fits the portfolio entry.
The screenshot includes a popup or consent banner

The image does not show the design at the intended size
For a specific device presentation, Chrome Device Mode supports device simulation and can include a device frame when one is shown. For a general browser-native capture, use the normal page view and avoid implying that the screenshot is an exact image of every screen size.
