For a normal Mac screenshot, press Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire screen or Shift-Command-4 to select a region. If by “a page” you mean an entire webpage that extends below the browser window, those shortcuts do not automatically scroll through it. Use Safari’s Web Archive for a saved webpage, Chrome Headless for an image or PDF, or a screenshot API when you need a repeatable full-page capture.
Choose the output before you capture
“Screenshot of a page” can mean several different files. Decide whether you need an image of what is visible, a tall image containing content below the fold, a PDF document, or an archive that can be opened later.

Apple’s screenshot tools capture screen content. They do not, by themselves, create one tall image by scrolling through an entire webpage.

Capture the visible page with Mac shortcuts
Capture the whole screen
- Open the webpage and arrange it as you want it to appear.
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- Find the screenshot on the desktop unless you previously changed the destination.
The result includes everything visible on the selected display, not just Safari or Chrome. Close private tabs, notifications, and unrelated windows before using this shortcut.

Capture a selected area
- Press and release Shift-Command-4.
- Drag over the portion of the page you want.
- Release the pointer to capture it. Press Esc while selecting to cancel.
This is usually the cleanest choice for a paragraph, chart, product card, or browser section. The selection is limited to what is currently visible.
Capture a browser window or menu
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the browser window or menu.
Hold Option while clicking to omit the window shadow. This is useful when you want a complete window boundary rather than a hand-drawn crop.
Use Screenshot for a timer, destination, and pointer controls
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the macOS Screenshot controls. From there you can choose a full-screen capture, window capture, or selected portion, set a timer, select a save location, and control whether the pointer appears. A floating thumbnail can be Control-clicked to save the capture to the Clipboard instead of keeping only a file.

On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents HDR capture as HEIF. For SDR and broader compatibility, choose the Most Compatible option, which uses PNG. If another application needs a conventional image, PNG is generally the safer interchange format.
Save an entire webpage in Safari
Safari’s archive workflow is different from a screenshot. Choose File > Save As, then select Web Archive or Page Source.

Web Archive
A Web Archive stores webpage graphics and preserves links while their destination pages remain available. It is useful when you want to reopen a page with much of its original structure, but it is not a single tall screenshot image. Some webpages may prevent Safari from saving items displayed on the page.
Page Source
Page Source saves the HTML source. It records markup rather than the rendered appearance, so it will not reproduce the visual page as a screenshot.
Use Web Archive when later inspection matters, Page Source when you need the HTML, and a screenshot workflow when the visual arrangement is the evidence you need.
Capture with Chrome’s command-line tools
Chrome provides two different command-line outputs through Headless Chrome. This route is intended for developers or anyone comfortable with Terminal; it is not the easiest keyboard-only method for an ordinary visible-screen capture.

PDF output
To create a document instead of an image, use --print-to-pdf:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf https://example.comA PDF can paginate long content and is not equivalent to one continuous screenshot. Use it when printing, searching, or sharing a document is more important than preserving one tall bitmap.
Wait for dynamic content
Pages that render after JavaScript runs may need additional time. Chrome’s Headless command-line options include --timeout, which lets the page load before capture:
chrome --headless --timeout=5000 --screenshot=page.png https://example.comChoose a delay long enough for the page’s content, but remember that a fixed delay cannot guarantee that every network request has finished. For repeatable automation, test pages with slow images, consent dialogs, and client-side rendering.

How to select the right method
- Visible content only: Use Shift-Command-3 for the display, Shift-Command-4 for a crop, or the window camera mode for a browser window.
- Everything below the fold as an image: Use a full-page capture tool such as Chrome Headless or an API. macOS’s basic shortcuts do not scroll automatically.
- A document for printing: Use Chrome’s
--print-to-pdf. - An editable or inspectable saved page: Use Safari Web Archive or Page Source, understanding that neither is a screenshot.
- Low technical effort: Use the macOS shortcuts. Command-line Chrome requires Terminal and a Chrome installation configured for headless use.

The shortcut does nothing
Press the keys together and release them; do not hold the mouse button while starting the shortcut. If another application has claimed the keyboard combination, open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5 and use its controls. Check macOS keyboard settings if the shortcut has been remapped.

The file is not on the desktop
Open Shift-Command-5 and inspect the save location. A previous configuration may send captures to Documents, Clipboard, Mail, or another destination. A floating thumbnail can also be dragged into an application or Control-clicked for save options.
The capture is cropped or misses content
Shift-Command-4 records only the rectangle you drag, and window capture records only the selected window. Scroll the page first for a different visible section, or switch to a full-page-capable method for content below the fold.

Some pages need JavaScript, authentication, cookies, or more loading time. Increase --timeout, verify the URL, and confirm that the page works in a normal browser. For protected or highly dynamic pages, configure the required session data in a capture service rather than assuming a screenshot command can bypass access controls.
Safari will not save part of a page
Apple notes that some webpages can prevent saving items displayed on the page. In that case, use a visible screenshot for the content you can see, or use another permitted capture method. A Web Archive still would not become a PNG screenshot.
Practical reliability and privacy checks
- Wait for images, fonts, and charts to finish rendering before a visible capture.
- Hide account numbers, private messages, API keys, and personal notifications.
- Check the viewport and display scaling when comparing captures from different Macs.
- For automation, record the URL, capture time, output format, viewport, and any wait settings.
- Use PDF for selectable text and printing; use PNG, JPEG, or WebP when the recipient needs an image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shift-Command-3 capture an entire scrolling webpage?
No. It captures the entire visible Mac screen. A page extending below the viewport needs a full-page tool, a PDF, or an archive workflow.
What is the difference between Safari Web Archive and Page Source?
Web Archive preserves a saved representation with graphics and links where destinations remain available; Page Source saves HTML markup. Neither is a rendered screenshot image.
