The right Adobe screenshot method depends on what you need to preserve. Use your operating system’s capture tool for a picture of an Adobe window, Export Frame in Premiere Pro for a video still, Export for Screens in Illustrator for artwork, InDesign’s image export for a page, Acrobat’s clipboard or Grab commands for a PDF, and FrameMaker’s RoboScreenCapture when you need annotated screen captures.

First decide whether you need a screen picture or an exported asset
An operating-system screenshot records exactly what is visible: menus, panels, dialogs and other application chrome. Adobe’s export commands instead render document content. That distinction affects pixel dimensions, color and whether the result remains connected to editable project content.
- Capture the interface: use the OS screenshot utility. This is the correct approach for Photoshop tutorials, bug reports and documenting a setting.
- Capture content cleanly: use the application’s export command. Artboards, pages and video frames are exported without the surrounding desktop.
- Make a PDF from a capture: capture to the clipboard or use Acrobat’s Grab service, rather than exporting an editable Acrobat document.
Capture Photoshop or another Adobe window
Windows
- Display the Photoshop canvas, panel or dialog you want to document.
- Use Windows’ screenshot function to capture the current window, a selected region or the entire screen. Pressing Print Screen places a screen capture on the Clipboard.
- In Photoshop, choose File > New and accept the Clipboard dimensions, then paste with Edit > Paste. You can also open a saved PNG or JPEG with File > Open.
- Crop, annotate or add a callout on a separate layer. Save a working PSD if you may need to revise the annotation, then export the final image from Photoshop.
macOS
- Show the Adobe window or region to be documented.
- Use macOS Screenshot to select a window, portion of the screen or full display. Save the file, or send the capture to the Clipboard when you need to paste it directly.
- Paste the Clipboard image into a Photoshop document, or choose File > Open for the saved capture.
This method includes whatever is visible, so hide private documents, account information and other windows before capturing. It is also the only method in this guide that intentionally records the complete Adobe interface.

Windows: Clipboard Image
- Capture the current window or screen with Windows. The Print Screen key is one way to copy the result to the Clipboard.
- Open Acrobat and choose File > Create PDF > From Clipboard Image.
- Acrobat converts the clipboard capture to a PDF and opens it. Save the PDF, then use Acrobat’s normal tools if you need to add comments, redact information or combine it with other pages.
macOS: Acrobat Services and Grab
- In Acrobat, choose Acrobat > Services > Grab.
- Select Screen for a full display, Selection for a region or Timed Screen when you need a delay to open a menu.
- Acrobat converts the capture to a PDF and opens it for saving or further editing.
These commands create a PDF whose page contains the screenshot. They do not convert a screenshot into editable text or rebuild an editable Acrobat source document.

Save a video frame from Premiere Pro
- Add the clip to a sequence and move the playhead to the exact frame you want.
- Show the clip in the Source Monitor or the sequence in the Program Monitor.
- Choose Export Frame. The command is available from the monitor controls.
- Enter a filename, choose an image format and destination, and select OK.
- Enable Import into project when you want Premiere to add the still to the project panel for later editing or placement in the timeline.
If Export Frame is missing
The Export Frame icon is not visible by default. Open the monitor panel’s Button Editor, add Export Frame to the control strip and apply the change. Adobe’s cited Premiere help page was updated January 21, 2026; labels can still vary slightly with workspace and release.
Use a high-quality still format
For DPX, TIFF, TRG or PNG, choose File > Export > Media, set the desired image format and clear Export As Sequence. Clearing that option makes Premiere write one frame instead of a numbered image sequence. This route gives more format and encoding control than the quick monitor button.
Export an Illustrator artboard or asset
- Open the Illustrator document and decide whether to export complete artboards or selected assets.
- Choose File > Export > Export for Screens.
- In the Artboards or Assets view, select the items to export and choose an output folder.
- Select PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF, then choose a scale such as 1x, 2x or 3x. You can generate multiple scale variants in one operation.
- Export and inspect the resulting files at their target size.
Export for Screens produces the design, not Illustrator’s panels or desktop. The available Adobe guide is for CC 2018, so the exact panel location and wording may differ in newer Illustrator releases. If you need a picture of the Illustrator interface itself, use the operating-system method instead.

Export an InDesign page as an image
- Open the document and choose the page or spread to share.
- Use InDesign’s export command and select JPEG or PNG as the format.
- Set the page or spread range, output location and image quality or resolution options exposed by your version.
- For an image intended primarily for a monitor, choose the low screen-resolution option documented by Adobe. Use a higher setting when the image will be printed or enlarged.
- Export, then check text legibility and image sharpness at the size where recipients will view it.
This workflow exports page content without the InDesign application frame. It is preferable to a desktop screenshot when the recipient needs a clean page image for review or distribution.
Use FrameMaker’s dedicated capture utility
FrameMaker documentation describes RoboScreenCapture, a built-in utility for captures that need more than a quick clipboard image. Choose the capture mode that matches the screen area:

Troubleshooting common Adobe screenshot problems
The screenshot contains the wrong monitor or a blank region
Re-select the display, window or region in the operating-system capture tool. On multi-monitor systems, move the Adobe window fully onto the intended display before capturing. For an asset-only result, stop using a desktop capture and switch to Illustrator, InDesign or Premiere’s export workflow.
Premiere exports the wrong frame
Stop playback, zoom the monitor if necessary and move the playhead one frame at a time until the timecode is correct. Confirm that you invoked Export Frame from the monitor showing the intended source or sequence. If a numbered sequence appears, return to File > Export > Media and clear Export As Sequence.
Export Frame is not on the Premiere monitor
Open the monitor’s Button Editor and add the icon. Workspace layouts can hide controls, so resetting or widening the monitor may also reveal the button.
The Illustrator export has no panels, guides or desktop
That is expected: Export for Screens renders artboards or assets. Capture the Illustrator window with the OS screenshot utility when interface context is required.

InDesign output looks soft
Check the export resolution and the intended viewing size. The low screen-resolution setting is designed for on-screen use; choose a higher setting when readers will zoom or print. Export a PNG when sharp interface-like text is more important than JPEG compression.
Acrobat creates a PDF with an unexpected crop
Capture only the required region before invoking Clipboard Image or Grab. For macOS, use Selection rather than Screen; for a menu that disappears too quickly, use Timed Screen.
Private information appears in the result
Close unrelated documents and notifications, hide account details and review the image at 100 percent before sharing. Cropping afterward is not a substitute for preventing sensitive content from being captured.
The image is too large to email or upload
Export the cleanest source at the target dimensions instead of downscaling a full desktop capture. For a Premiere still, choose an appropriate format; for Illustrator, export the required scale rather than every available scale. If you must resize, keep an untouched master and create a separate delivery copy.
