On most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, press and release the Power (or Side) button and Volume Down together. The display flashes and a preview toolbar appears. Older Galaxy models with a physical Home button may use Power + Home instead.
Choose the method that fits your Galaxy device

Samsung changes button placement and menu labels across models, software versions, carriers and regions. If a control named here is missing, use the manual for your exact Galaxy model rather than assuming the feature is available.
Take a standard screenshot with the buttons
- Open the app or screen you want to save. Anything visible at the moment of capture can appear in the image, including the status area and on-screen controls.
- Press the Power or Side button and Volume Down at the same time.
- Release the buttons when the screen flashes. A brief, simultaneous press is the safest approach; holding the buttons for a long time can open the power menu or change the volume instead.
- Use the preview thumbnail or toolbar if you need to crop, share or start another action. If you do nothing, the image is saved automatically.
On a Galaxy model with a physical Home button, substitute Home for Volume Down and press Power + Home together. The exact location of the Side/Power key differs between models, so orient the phone before pressing both controls.

Use Palm swipe when you do not want to press buttons
Palm swipe to capture is an optional gesture. It is not present on every Galaxy device and may be disabled by default.

- Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Find Palm swipe to capture (the wording can vary) and turn it on if the option is available.
- Place the edge of your hand on one side of the display and sweep it across the screen in one motion.
- Wait for the flash and preview toolbar, then edit or share the image as needed.
Samsung notes that the palm gesture is unavailable while the keyboard is showing. Close the keyboard and use the button shortcut instead, or use the gesture after leaving the text field. A thick case or screen protector can also make the swipe harder to detect; remove the case temporarily while testing.
Capture a long webpage with Scroll capture
A normal screenshot records only what is currently visible. For a page, conversation or document that extends below the display, use the scrolling control after starting a regular capture.
- Take a standard screenshot with the button combination or another enabled method.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap Scroll capture (usually shown as a down-arrow icon).
- Continue tapping the control to extend the image downward. Stop when the required content is included.
- Allow the phone to finish assembling the image, then save, crop or share it from the preview.
The control appears only when Samsung detects content that can scroll. It is not a universal full-page capture for every app or screen; a fixed home screen, a protected view or a screen with no additional content will not offer it. Very long pages may be easier to handle as several captures if one image becomes difficult to view or share.

Other built-in options
S Pen Screen write
Supported Galaxy devices can use an S Pen feature such as Screen write to capture and annotate the current screen. The command and Air command layout vary by model. Treat it as an optional workflow, not a requirement: the button shortcut works without an S Pen.
Voice commands
Some Samsung configurations expose a screenshot command through a voice assistant. Availability depends on the assistant, language, account and software version. If the command is not offered, use the physical buttons or an enabled gesture.
Find the saved screenshot
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Albums.
- Open Screenshots to view captures in chronological order.
You can also browse the image through My Files if you prefer the file manager or need to attach the image to another app. From Gallery, open a screenshot to crop or share it. A scroll capture is stored as one tall image rather than as the individual screen sections used to create it.

When Samsung refuses to capture the screen
Some apps and screens deliberately block screenshots for security or privacy reasons. Samsung may display a message saying that a security policy prevents capture. That is a restriction imposed by the content or device policy, not a button problem. Do not try to bypass it by switching to Palm swipe, Scroll capture or another capture method. Capture only screens that the app and your organization allow you to save.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work
Nothing happens when both buttons are pressed
- Press the two buttons together and release at the flash; do not press one noticeably earlier.
- Try the Side/Power key with Volume Down, not Volume Up.
- If the phone has a physical Home button, try Power + Home.
- Remove a case temporarily if it prevents either key from traveling fully.
- Check your model’s manual if the keys or shortcut differ from these combinations.
The power menu or volume control appears
This usually means the buttons were held too long or one was pressed first. Close the menu, place both fingers on the keys, press simultaneously, and release as soon as the display flashes.
Palm swipe is missing or unreliable
- Return to Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures; the feature may be disabled or unavailable on your model.
- Keep the keyboard closed while swiping.
- Use the edge of your hand, move across the whole display, and try the button method if the gesture still does not register.
Scroll capture does not appear
First confirm that the page actually scrolls. The option is conditional and appears on the screenshot toolbar only when Samsung detects additional content. A protected app, a fixed screen or a model without the feature will not show the control.

The image cannot be located
Check Gallery > Albums > Screenshots, then use My Files to search the device if Gallery is filtered to a different album or view. If the capture was blocked by a security policy, no image will have been created.
Model and software differences to expect
Samsung sells Galaxy phones and tablets with different button layouts and software builds. A Canadian support page, for example, cautions that carrier, software and model can change the displayed settings; the same qualification applies when you use instructions from another market. Menu names may move after a system update, and a feature documented for a newer device may not exist on an older one. When the instructions do not match your screen, search Samsung support for the exact model number and software version shown in Settings > About phone, or consult the device manual.

Can I use the same shortcut on a Galaxy tablet?
