Use the shortcut for your operating system: Windows + PrtScn saves the whole screen, Shift + Command + 3 captures the entire Mac display, and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows opens Chromebook capture controls. The sections below explain where each file goes, what to do when a key is missing, and when a Clipboard or selection workflow is better.

A “full-screen” shortcut captures what is displayed on your monitor. It is different from a full-page web capture, which continues below the browser’s visible viewport.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Save the entire screen directly to a file
- Arrange the windows and monitors exactly as you want them captured.
- Press Windows + PrtScn together. The display may briefly dim.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open the newest PNG file, or copy, rename and move it as needed.
This method saves automatically, so it is the most reliable Windows shortcut when you need a file rather than a temporary image.
When the keyboard has no PrtScn key
On a laptop or compact keyboard, the Print Screen function may share another key or be omitted. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as the fallback. Hold all three keys briefly, then check Pictures > Screenshots.

If your keyboard has a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scr or a similar abbreviation, use that key in place of PrtScn. Some manufacturers require Fn with it; the keyboard’s printed secondary icon indicates when that is necessary.
Copy the full screen instead of saving a file
Press the plain Print Screen key to copy the entire screen to the Clipboard. Open Paint, Photos, an email or another image-capable app, press Ctrl + V, and save from that app. Because this route is Clipboard-only, nothing appears in Pictures/Screenshots until you paste and save it.
Use Snipping Tool for full screen, a window or a region
Press Windows + Shift + S. Snipping Tool presents capture modes for a rectangular region, a free-form region, a single window and the full screen. Choose the full-screen mode when you want the whole display but also need the option to annotate or share the result from the notification that appears.

macOS
Capture every visible display
- Close or arrange anything that should not appear.
- Press and release Shift + Command + 3.
- Find the resulting image on the desktop, which is the default save location.
On a Mac with more than one display, the shortcut captures the connected screens according to macOS’s screenshot behavior. If you need only one window or a selected area, use the Screenshot app instead of the all-screen shortcut.
Copy the image to the Clipboard
Add Control to the shortcut: press Control + Shift + Command + 3. macOS places the capture on the Clipboard rather than creating the normal desktop file. Paste it into an image editor, document or message.
Open the Screenshot app
Press Shift + Command + 5 on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. The control bar lets you capture the entire screen, a window or a selected portion. It also provides a timer, a save-location selector, thumbnail behavior and pointer-visibility controls. Use these settings when a fixed desktop save location or an immediate three-key capture is not suitable.

Some apps, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. A black or protected result in such an app is an application restriction, not a keyboard failure.

Chromebook and ChromeOS
Open capture controls and choose full screen
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is normally on the top row and looks like a rectangle beside two vertical lines.
- In the Screen Capture controls, select the full-screen option.
- Click or tap the screen to capture it.
- Open the Files app and check Downloads, the default folder for screenshots.
The same controls also offer window and partial-area captures. You can change the destination folder from the capture interface if Downloads is not where you want future files.
Use an external keyboard without Show windows
Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 for external keyboards that do not have a Show windows key. After the controls open, select full screen and verify the file in Downloads or your selected folder.

What “full screen” includes—and what it does not
- A full-screen shortcut records the desktop image currently displayed, including visible application windows, menus and notifications.
- It does not automatically capture a web page’s content below the browser window. Use a browser’s full-page capture feature or a webpage screenshot service for that job.
- Anything hidden behind another window, minimized or outside the captured display is not visible in the resulting image.
- Clipboard workflows do not create a permanent file until you paste and save them.
Find, move and verify the screenshot
Windows
Open File Explorer, choose Pictures and then Screenshots. Sort by date modified to find the latest capture. If you used plain Print Screen, paste into an image-capable app instead; there will be no new file until you save it.
Mac
Look on the desktop for the newest image. If you used the Control-modified shortcut, paste from the Clipboard. If you changed the destination in the Screenshot app, check that folder instead.

Open the Files app and select Downloads, unless you selected another destination in Screen Capture. The file appears after the capture notification completes.

Troubleshooting common shortcut problems
Nothing happens on Windows
- Check that you are pressing the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
- Try Fn + Windows + Space Bar when there is no dedicated Print Screen key.
- Press plain Print Screen and paste into Paint. If that works, the keyboard is sending the key and the issue is likely the Windows-save shortcut or an OEM keyboard mode.
- On managed work computers, an administrator policy or keyboard utility can disable capture shortcuts. Test with Snipping Tool to separate a policy issue from a hardware issue.
The Windows image is not where expected
Windows + PrtScn uses Pictures/Screenshots. Plain Print Screen uses the Clipboard and therefore has no automatic file location. Paste and save it manually.
The Mac shortcut saves nothing
- Confirm you pressed and released Shift + Command + 3, rather than holding the keys while pressing another key.
- Check the desktop and the destination configured in Shift + Command + 5.
- If the target is a protected app window, try capturing another application to determine whether the app is blocking screenshots.
Chromebook controls do not open
- Use the Chromebook’s Show windows key, or the external-keyboard fallback Ctrl + Shift + F5.
- Press the keys together rather than one at a time, and make sure Ctrl and Shift are the left or right modifiers recognized by the keyboard.
- Check Downloads and the destination shown in Screen Capture after the controls appear.
The capture is black or incomplete
Protected media can prevent an application window from being captured. For ordinary windows, make sure the content was visible before pressing the shortcut and repeat the capture after closing transient menus or overlays. A keyboard shortcut cannot recover pixels that an application deliberately refuses to render.
Choosing a keyboard for a Windows laptop or desktop
Most people do not need new hardware: Snipping Tool and the documented Fn fallback solve the missing-key problem. If you take frequent Windows captures and your current keyboard has no convenient Print Screen function, a USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is a reasonable conditional purchase. Confirm the layout, the operating-system compatibility and current inventory before buying; key legends and Fn behavior vary by model.
