Use local AI to compare a job posting with your existing experience, find relevant evidence, and refine selected parts of your résumé and cover letter—not to invent a career history. A reliable process is to extract the role’s needs, map each one to a true example, revise only where the evidence supports it, and personally verify every claim before applying.
What local AI can—and cannot—do for an application
A local language model can help analyze a job description, compare it with your résumé, suggest focused edits, and critique a draft. The useful distinction is between improving how you present real qualifications and creating qualifications you do not have. AI can make up skills, overstate experience, miss errors, or produce generic prose, so treat its output as a draft rather than a source of facts. The University of Victoria Career Services warns that “AI tools will make up skills so you will need to make sure they are accurate and true to your own experience.”
A résumé is a structured record of relevant skills, experience, and achievements. A cover letter is a short narrative: it identifies the role, explains your genuine interest, and connects a few examples to the employer’s needs. AI can help organize and edit that narrative, but it cannot reliably supply your real motivation or personal knowledge of an organization.

A repeatable workflow for tailoring both documents
1. Build a source résumé or evidence inventory
Start with a fuller record of your work history, responsibilities, projects, education, credentials, volunteer experience, and achievements. Include numbers or outcomes only when you can substantiate them. This source document is the factual basis for tailoring; it is safer and more useful than asking a model to generate a career history from scratch.

2. Parse the job description before editing
Ask AI to list the posting’s required qualifications, preferred qualifications, responsibilities, recurring terms, and likely priorities. Then check its list against the actual posting. New Jersey’s Department of Labor recommends identifying keywords and phrases related to skills, experience, responsibilities, and duties, and writing down the requirements before drafting.
3. Map each requirement to evidence
For every important requirement, identify the exact résumé detail that supports it. Classify each item as supported, adjacent or transferable, or unsupported. Ask the model to identify what evidence is missing and pose questions rather than fill gaps with assumptions. A transferable skill belongs in the application only when you can point to a real example.

4. Revise only the relevant résumé sections
Ask for concise accomplishment bullets that preserve your facts while making relevant skills and results easier to see. Keep a separate list of possible gaps and terms from the posting to consider. Use the employer’s wording only when it truthfully describes your experience; repeating keywords without evidence is not a substitute for a qualification.
5. Draft the cover letter from evidence and real motivation
Use AI to outline or refine a letter around a small number of supported examples. Supply your own reason for wanting this role and employer, along with specific, accurate knowledge of the organization’s work. The letter should connect those details to what the employer needs, not repeat the résumé or rely on generic enthusiasm. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Career Center notes that a cover letter is more narrative than a résumé and that complex personal storytelling is a weakness for AI.

6. Verify, personalize, and proofread
Check every sentence against your source résumé and the job posting. Correct invented or exaggerated claims, restore your natural voice, and read the letter aloud to catch awkward or repetitive language. If possible, ask a mentor, friend, or career adviser to review accuracy, clarity, structure, and how professionally the documents represent you—checks also recommended by Tahatū Career Navigator.
7. Keep the presentation readable
Use standard section headings and a simple layout, spell out acronyms when useful, and include relevant posting terms in context. New Jersey guidance describes chronological résumés as a fit when work history and progression are central, and skills-forward or functional formats as options for some career changers or people with employment gaps. Choose a format that represents your actual history clearly. These readability practices are not a promise that a résumé will pass a particular applicant-tracking system (ATS).
A prompt that keeps the model grounded in your experience
Use a prompt that limits the model to supplied evidence and asks it to flag uncertainty instead of guessing. For example:
Compare the job description with my source résumé. First list the role’s required and preferred skills, responsibilities, and recurring terms. For each item, identify the résumé evidence that supports it. Mark unsupported requirements as gaps; do not infer that I have them. Suggest concise revisions using only facts in my résumé. Keep my dates, job titles, employers, metrics, and credentials unchanged. Ask me a question if essential evidence is missing. Then suggest a cover-letter outline using two supported examples and leave a placeholder for my personal reason for applying. Do not invent company facts or personal motivations.
This follows the guidance from career services to give specific instructions, compare actual experience with the posting, and review every AI suggestion for accuracy. You can also phrase the task simply: “Can you help me match my résumé experience to the qualifications listed in this job posting?” or “Compare my résumé and the job posting to tell me what’s missing.”

A local model may process text on your own computer, reducing the need to upload a résumé to an external AI service. But “local” alone does not prove that an app, browser extension, model download, or surrounding workflow is offline. Check the chosen tool’s current documentation and configuration to find out how it handles prompts, files, model downloads, and storage.
The ATS Buddy repository documents both local Ollama and browser-model options for that project; its browser route calls for desktop Chrome or Edge with WebGPU and hardware acceleration, and model downloads vary in size. Those are implementation-specific details, not universal requirements for local AI. Check the requirements of the particular software and model you plan to use. Available documentation does not establish a controlled comparison of the options’ writing quality or a general privacy guarantee.

Keep expectations realistic
- No guaranteed ATS result: Accurate keyword alignment and clear formatting can make qualifications easier to read, but the guidance here establishes no universal ATS scoring method or pass guarantee. Do not treat an AI match score as an employer’s actual ATS result.
- No proven hiring-rate lift: The cited career-service recommendations are guidance, not a controlled evaluation. They establish no numerical success rate or causal hiring benefit from AI-assisted tailoring.
- Employer rules still apply: Follow any instructions the employer gives about AI use. Illinois Career Center advises applicants not to assume AI tools will be available in the workplace.
