To sync a Roku voice remote, put the Roku device and remote into pairing mode. On the remote, hold its pairing button for five seconds until the status light flashes; if it has no pairing button, hold Back and Home together for five seconds. A Roku simple remote has no voice button, uses infrared, and does not pair.

Identify which Roku remote you have

  • Voice remote: It has a voice or microphone button near the directional pad and pairs wirelessly. The pairing control varies by model. Roku’s pairing instructions cover the voice-remote procedure.
  • Simple remote: It has no voice button and uses infrared (IR). It does not pair; it needs batteries and a clear path to the Roku device. Roku’s simple-remote guidance describes this setup.

How to pair a Roku voice remote

  1. Put the Roku device in pairing mode. If another remote works, or you can control Roku with the mobile app, press Home and go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue. Follow the on-screen prompts.
  2. If you cannot use another remote, restart the Roku device. Unplug its power, wait at least five seconds, then plug it back in. When the Home screen appears, proceed to pairing the remote.
  3. Put the voice remote in pairing mode. If it has a pairing button, look on the back or under the battery cover and hold it for five seconds, until the status light flashes. If it has no pairing button, hold Back + Home together for five seconds until the light flashes.
  4. Wait for the pairing confirmation. The Roku device and remote need to be in pairing mode at the same time. Follow any instructions displayed on the TV.

See Roku’s voice-remote pairing steps for the official procedure.

What to do if pairing fails

  • Make sure both the Roku device and remote entered pairing mode at the same time, then repeat the steps.
  • Restart the Roku player or TV and try pairing again.
  • Check that the batteries are seated and have charge, or recharge the remote if its model has a rechargeable battery.
  • Move the remote closer to the device, clear obstacles, and reduce possible electronic interference.
  • If you do not have a working remote, use the Roku mobile app for temporary control, if available for your device and network.

Roku’s pairing guidance and troubleshooting instructions provide additional help.

If your Roku remote has no pairing button

First confirm that it is a voice remote by looking for a voice or microphone button. If it is, hold Back + Home together for five seconds until the status light flashes, then wait for the Roku device to show the pairing confirmation. A simple remote has no voice button and does not pair, so this button sequence will not apply.

How to use a Roku simple remote

Insert fresh, matching batteries, or remove the battery pull tab if the remote is new. Point the remote toward the front of the Roku device and make sure nothing blocks the signal. Simple remotes use infrared, so a direct, unobstructed line of sight is needed; there is no pairing mode to activate.

Pairing is separate from TV power and volume setup

Pairing connects a voice remote to the Roku device. Setting up TV power and volume control is a separate feature available only on certain remotes. To configure it, go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes, select your voice remote, then choose Set up remote for TV control. TV compatibility varies, and HDMI-CEC settings can affect control. See Roku’s remote guidance for details.

Choosing a replacement remote

If your remote is lost or faulty, identify your Roku device model and whether the old remote was a voice or simple remote before choosing a replacement. Match the replacement type to the device; a remote that looks similar may not be compatible. Roku’s voice-remote compatibility information lists supported device and remote models.
