You can move your saved places from Google Maps to Apple Maps, but the documented process is not a universal one-click transfer. First make a Google Takeout archive so you retain a copy; then either recreate places in Apple Maps Guides or use a third-party converter and carefully check its matches. Changing which app opens navigation links is a separate setting to verify on your iPhone.
What “switching” involves
There are two separate tasks: moving or recreating your saved places, and changing which app opens navigation links. Saving places in Apple Maps does not automatically change your navigation defaults, and changing a default does not transfer saved data.
Identify what you have saved in Google Maps
On iPhone, open Google Maps and tap Saved. Check which places and lists you want to keep. Ordinary saved lists, labeled places, and projects in My Maps are distinct features; identify where each item lives before choosing a transfer method. Google’s Maps help describes saved places and My Maps separately.

Make a backup with Google Takeout
- Open Google Takeout and select the Google data you want to export. Google’s general Takeout guidance explains selecting data, choosing delivery and archive file type, and creating an archive; it does not establish every Maps-specific export field or file name.
- Keep the downloaded archive as a backup while you build and review your Apple Maps collection. Google says downloading an archive does not delete the original data.
- Account for changes made while the archive is being prepared: Google cautions that changes between the export request and archive creation may not be included. Check Google Maps again for recent additions before relying on the archive as a complete snapshot. See Google’s Takeout download guidance.
Google also notes that “Recently saved” is unavailable if you have not saved places in the last 180 days, and “Nearby saved” is unavailable when no saved places are within 25 km (about 16 miles). Those are Google Maps display conditions, not limits on what you can transfer. Details are in Google Maps saved places help.

Choose how to add places to Apple Maps

Manually recreate a small collection
- In Apple Maps, create a custom Guide for the places you want to keep. Apple’s guide to saving places documents creating and editing Guides.
- Search Apple Maps for a saved place, or locate it on the map and select its pin.
- Add the result to the Guide. Review the place name and location before moving to the next saved item.
- Repeat for each place, organizing your Guides in a way that makes sense for your future use.

Consider a third-party bulk converter for a larger collection
GoToAppleMaps says its service accepts Google Takeout CSV and other formats, matches locations, and creates an Apple Maps Guide link. Its product listing also describes an iOS app and support for formats including CSV, KML/KMZ, GPX, GeoJSON, and JSON. These are vendor claims; capabilities and listings can change. The vendor says that named places improve matching, generic pins may not match perfectly, and multiple lists are combined into one Guide. Do not assume that original list groupings, notes, or categories will carry over. Review the resulting Guide against your Takeout archive before relying on it.

Check the converted or recreated places
- Confirm that each result is the intended location, especially when a business has several branches or multiple places share a name.
- Pay extra attention to unnamed pins and coordinate-based locations; a plausible search match is not proof it is the same destination.
- Look for duplicate entries and compare the resulting collection with the original lists in Google Maps.
- Check whether any notes or categories you care about are present. Neither manual recreation nor the vendor-described conversion should be treated as a guaranteed transfer of those details.
Change which app opens navigation links separately
Do this after deciding how you want to use your saved places. Default-app controls can vary by iOS release and region, and the available official documentation does not establish one universal current path for making Apple Maps the default for every navigation link. Check the current Default Apps controls in your iPhone’s Settings and follow the options shown on your device. Google’s instructions for choosing Google Maps inside Chrome are specific to Chrome and do not establish a system-wide iPhone setting; see Google’s Chrome help.
