On a Mac, a trackpad swipe over Safari’s tab bar can reveal tabs that do not fit on screen, but Apple does not document it as a gesture for activating the next or previous tab. To select a tab, click it; to find one visually, pinch closed to show Safari’s tab overview. For direct sequential switching, use Safari’s keyboard shortcuts.
Reveal tabs that are off-screen in Safari

Move the pointer over Safari’s tab bar. When more tabs are open than fit in the visible strip, swipe left or right over the bar to scroll through it. This reveals more tabs; it does not select one automatically. Apple’s Safari tab-arranging guide documents this behavior.

Find and select a tab using the trackpad
If you can’t readily spot the tab in the strip, pinch closed on the trackpad to display Safari’s all-tabs thumbnail overview, then click the page you want. Apple documents this gesture in its guide to viewing webpages in Safari tabs.
Switch directly to the next or previous Safari tab
For adjacent tabs without aiming at the tab bar, use a keyboard shortcut:

Jump to a numbered tab in Safari
Command-1 through Command-8 selects one of the first eight tabs; Command-9 selects the last tab. If these shortcuts do not work, check whether the option is enabled under Safari > Settings > Tabs. Apple’s tab-arranging guide describes the setting and shortcuts.

Why a swipe might change desktops instead
macOS documents a horizontal multi-finger swipe for moving between desktops and full-screen apps—not for cycling browser tabs. The documented finger count can vary: Apple describes four fingers in one configuration and notes that some macOS versions use three. To inspect or adjust available gestures, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad; on older macOS releases, the panel may be called System Preferences. See Apple’s Multi-Touch gesture guide.

Does this work in other Mac browsers?
The swipe-to-scroll, pinch-to-overview, and keyboard instructions here are documented for Safari. They should not be assumed to work the same way in Chrome, Firefox, or other apps; check the specific browser’s current settings and shortcuts.
