This is a pre-release guide to the Call of Duty DMZ game mode, not advice for a real radiation emergency. In Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, the publisher says the eastern Hajin high-radiation area requires an in-game gas mask and contains exclusive loot. Decide whether that loot is worth the exposure, and keep a workable route to extraction. Game equipment offers no real-world protection.
What radiation means in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
Call of Duty describes Modern Warfare 4 DMZ as an extraction shooter set in the fictional Hajin exclusion zone. Its June 6, 2026 deep dive depicts a region affected by radiation and mass evacuation, including a reactor area, city, prison, and military base. These are fictional game-world details, not descriptions of a real hazard.
The publisher places a high-radiation area in eastern Hajin. It says the area contains loot available only at that point of interest and requires a gas mask for entry. The official deep dive also lists radiation blockers among craftable consumables. Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 DMZ deep dive does not give reliable figures for radiation damage, gas-mask durability, or blocker duration, so there is no substantiated timer or equipment ranking to rely on.

Choose between routing around the area and entering it for its exclusive loot. The better choice depends on whether the loot or objective matters to your run and whether you can still reach an extraction point. This is a risk-based decision, not a tested optimal strategy.

| Choice | Potential value | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid or route around the area | Preserves time and avoids the area’s exposure risk. | You give up the exclusive loot located there. |
| Enter with the in-game gas mask | Gives you a chance to pursue the area’s exclusive loot or an objective there. | Budget for the trip and the return; the publisher has not stated exact protection durations or exposure values. |
Before committing, check your intended route and current extraction options. If reaching the area would leave too little time or too few viable exits, skip it. Call of Duty frames DMZ around weighing exploration, resources, missions, combat, and extraction against growing operational risk.
Plan extraction before radiation closes routes
Do not assume that carrying a gas mask guarantees you can extract. In the separate DMZ: Recon game context, Call of Duty’s official guide says radiation spreads as the countdown runs down and can remove exfil locations it reaches—even when a player has a gas mask. The guide advises considering exfil before the timer runs out. Read Call of Duty’s DMZ: Recon 101 guide.

That guide concerns DMZ: Recon. Its exact timings and map behavior are not established for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, so treat it as a reason to plan ahead, not proof that the two games use identical mechanics. In Modern Warfare 4, verify the live map and available exits in your match rather than relying on a remembered timer.

What radiation blockers can—and cannot—be assumed to do
The Modern Warfare 4 deep dive identifies radiation blockers as craftable in-game consumables. It does not establish their duration, whether they grant immunity, or how their protection compares with a gas mask. Use only the item description and behavior confirmed in the released game; do not plan around an assumed number of seconds or guaranteed protection.

For a real radiation emergency, follow emergency instructions
DMZ’s gas masks and radiation blockers are fictional game items, not real emergency equipment guidance. If an actual nuclear or radiation emergency occurs, follow local alerts and instructions from emergency authorities. The CDC’s core advice is to get inside: building walls can block much harmful radiation. If you are outside and cannot get indoors immediately, covering your mouth and nose with a mask, cloth, or towel may help reduce inhalation of radioactive material while you seek shelter. This is temporary, not a substitute for shelter or official directions. CDC: What to Do—Get Inside.
HHS REMM describes damage and radiation zones as variable planning concepts for responders, not as a civilian route-planning guide. Do not use game maps or responder-zone descriptions to decide how to enter a potentially contaminated area. HHS REMM: Nuclear detonation planning guidance.
