If you run out of ammo while a heavy ARC is still attacking, stop trying to win a damage race. Break line of sight, get behind solid cover, recover stamina when you have a safe moment, and move toward an extraction route you have already identified. The available enemy guides do not establish a reliable no-ammo method for killing heavy ARCs, and each machine’s attacks call for different cover.
What to do first when your ammo is gone
- Stop firing at armor. ARC armor penetration matters: the Epic Games Store survival guide identifies Ferro and Hullcracker as useful against machines, while Kettle, Stitcher, and Bobcat are more difficult choices. If you have no suitable ammunition left, continuing to shoot is not a dependable way to stop a heavy ARC.
- Break line of sight. Move behind a substantial object, around a corner, or inside a building. A moment out of view can give you room to choose a route rather than remaining exposed.
- Choose a route before sprinting. Aim for cover along the way and a known exit, not simply the nearest open ground. Save sprinting for the stretches where speed matters.
- Keep moving toward survival, not a kill. Do not count on unarmed attacks or an unspecified item to defeat a heavy ARC; the cited guides do not establish a reliable no-ammo kill tactic.
Manage stamina on the way out
The Epic Games Store survival guide says sprinting quickly depletes stamina, while standing, walking, and crouching gradually restore it. Use that recovery when you are protected and out of immediate danger instead of sprinting continuously until you cannot move quickly when you need to.
- Holster your weapon when appropriate: the guide says doing so makes you run faster.
- Slide after sprinting if it helps you move through the route; the guide says sliding after a sprint does not expend stamina.
- Do not trade safe cover for a small movement shortcut. A route that gives you a chance to recover is more useful than one that leaves you exposed with depleted stamina.
Choose extraction with its noise in mind
Find extraction points before you need to flee. The survival guide lists Raider Hatches, Cargo Elevators, Airshafts, and other exits; Raider Hatches require a key. Regular extraction controls make a loud noise that can attract ARC machines and human opponents, so reaching an exit does not mean the danger is over.
- From cover, identify a route to the exit and the places where you can break line of sight along the way.
- Approach using cover rather than crossing open ground without a plan.
- Before activating a regular extraction control, account for the noise and the possibility of drawing nearby enemies. Be ready to use cover while extraction proceeds.
- If your intended exit is a Raider Hatch, make sure you have its required key; do not assume every exit works the same way.
Adjust your cover to the enemy
Cover is not interchangeable when an ARC has different ways to attack you. GameSpot’s enemy guide gives these examples; they are situational tactics, not a guarantee of escape.

Rocketeer
Get inside substantial cover, such as a building interior, rather than relying on a thin obstacle in the open. GameSpot warns that the Rocketeer’s rockets have splash damage, so merely being near cover may not protect you.
Leaper
A doorway can limit the Leaper’s jumps and give you a more controlled space to move through. Use it to break the attack’s approach and continue toward a safer route; do not mistake the doorway tactic for a guaranteed way to defeat it without ammunition.

Bastion
Use a large object or a corner to break line of sight and manage the Bastion’s machine-gun bursts. GameSpot’s advice to attack between firing rounds is for a fight with ammunition; if you are empty, use the cover to disengage instead.

The survival guide describes bandages as restoring health over time and shield rechargers as restoring shield energy. These can help you recover, but using an item while exposed does not solve the immediate threat. Get behind cover first if you can. If a teammate is down, the guide says you can revive them by holding the interaction button or using a Defibrillator; whether that is safe depends on the enemy’s position and your available cover.

Prepare before the next run
The most useful response to running dry is to reduce the chance that your loadout leaves you unable to handle the ARC you meet. The Epic Games Store guide says players can equip up to two weapons and advises considering ARC Armor Penetration before engaging. A second weapon helps only if its ammunition is available and its matchup is useful.
- Consider whether your weapons’ penetration suits the machines you expect to face; the guide names Ferro and Hullcracker as useful against machines.
- Check that you have ammunition for the weapons you bring. A weapon without the right ammo is not a backup plan.
- Locate extraction points early and consider whether your route offers hard cover and places to recover stamina.
- Keep the noise from regular extraction controls in mind when deciding where and how to disengage.
Enemy weak points are useful when you still have suitable ammunition: GameSpot describes targeting a Leaper’s face and legs, a Rocketeer’s thrusters, and a Bastion’s leg joints and rear canister. Those are combat targets, not a substitute for ammunition when your priority is escape.
