The most reliable way to support endangered species is to fund or join conservation that protects and restores the habitat a species needs, uses measurable objectives, and gives local and Indigenous rights-holders a meaningful role. Treat accreditation as one verification signal—not as proof that every claim, donation, or species outcome is guaranteed.
Start by identifying the species and habitat priorities, the threats being addressed, and how progress will be monitored. Then check who governs the work, what your contribution pays for, and whether any certification applies to a site, a facility, or a particular program.
Why habitat protection is central to species recovery
A threatened species cannot recover for long if the places it feeds, breeds, migrates, or shelters continue to disappear or deteriorate. Species and habitat planning therefore need to be designed together. IUCN Save Our Species uses IUCN Red List assessments to prioritize threatened species and frames success across three connected results: healthier species populations, better habitat, and benefits for people.

Habitat work is more than drawing a boundary on a map. Effective protection can involve governance and land-use planning, patrols and enforcement, ecological monitoring, restoration of degraded areas, safeguarding remaining natural habitat, and reconnecting fragmented areas when connectivity is important to the species. A project that performs only one of these functions may be useful, but its stated role should be clear.

IUCN describes conservation as a cycle of assessing the situation, planning a response, and acting on it. Save Our Species adds communication and an integrated focus on species, habitat, and people. This approach helps a supporter judge whether a proposed activity addresses a documented threat rather than simply sounding beneficial.
Four kinds of habitat action to look for
Protect remaining natural habitat
Protection can prevent conversion, destructive extraction, disturbance, or other pressures in places that still retain the ecological conditions a species requires. Ask which area is covered, what threat is being reduced, and who has authority to enforce the protection.
Restore degraded ecosystems
Restoration aims to recover ecological functions where habitat has been damaged. A credible plan should identify the degradation, the methods to address it, the expected time scale, and indicators that show whether habitat quality is improving. Restoration is not automatically appropriate everywhere; the project should explain why the selected intervention fits the species and site.

Roads, farms, development, and other changes can divide habitat into isolated patches. Where a species needs movement between patches, conservation may protect corridors or improve connections. Look for a location-specific rationale rather than a generic promise that connectivity is always the answer.
Improve management, monitoring, and enforcement
A protected area can fail if rules are unclear, underfunded, or not enforced. Strong programs describe governance arrangements, monitoring methods, reporting responsibilities, and how managers will respond when results fall short. These operational details are part of habitat protection, not administrative extras.
Choose a practical way to contribute
Your support can be directed at different scales. IUCN Save Our Species describes funding frontline conservation organizations with regional knowledge and offers partnership pathways. A particular fund or project may have different eligibility, earmarking, or reporting terms, so verify its current options before giving.

A due-diligence checklist for any conservation appeal
1. Name the ecological priority
Identify the threatened species, the habitat or landscape, and the life-cycle need involved. A proposal should explain whether it protects breeding sites, feeding grounds, migration routes, refuges, or another documented requirement. The IUCN Red List status can help establish why the species is a priority, but status alone does not prove that a proposed intervention will work.
2. Connect the activity to a threat
Ask what is causing the decline and how the project changes that pressure. Examples of useful answers include preventing habitat loss, improving management of an existing protected area, restoring a measured form of degradation, or reconnecting separated habitat. Be cautious when a project lists activities without explaining the causal chain from action to improved survival or habitat condition.
3. Examine objectives and indicators
Look for a baseline, a target, a time frame, and a method of measurement. Indicators might concern habitat area or condition, connectivity, enforcement performance, population trends, or another outcome relevant to the project. A promise to create activity without a way to judge ecological change is weaker evidence than a monitored plan.
4. Check governance and participation
Find out who makes decisions, who holds rights to the land or resources, and how local communities and Indigenous Peoples participate. IUCN Save Our Species describes people-centered conservation, local capacity building, and partnerships with frontline organizations. Meaningful participation should be visible in governance and benefit arrangements, not limited to a one-time consultation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Match the funding mechanism to your expectation
Determine whether your money is unrestricted, restricted to a theme, or assigned to a named activity. Ask when and how updates are provided and whether the organization reports setbacks as well as successes. If the terms do not establish project-level earmarking, do not assume that a donation produces a specific field result.

6. Verify recognition claims
Words such as accredited, certified, endorsed, or partner can refer to different things. Confirm the issuing body, the object being evaluated, the current status, and the date. A site certification, a facility accreditation, and a program partnership are not interchangeable.
7. Consider durability
Habitat gains can be temporary if funding, governance, or legal protection ends. Ask how management will continue, who will maintain monitoring, and what happens when threats change. A credible project explains its next decision point rather than presenting a one-time intervention as a permanent solution.
What the IUCN Green List actually verifies
The IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas is the clearest habitat-related certification in this context. It evaluates sites—not every organization that works at a site—against a standard covering good governance, sound design and planning, effective management, and successful conservation outcomes. The published standard identifies 17 criteria; its Version 1.1 was approved in November 2017.
The process includes site self-assessment and eligibility review. Candidate sites provide evidence, consult stakeholders, and receive a site visit. Evaluation and independent review inform Green List decisions, and listed sites must maintain the standard through continuing review. Operational requirements can change, so check the current Green List process pages when making a decision.
Green List status does not certify every statement made by a nonprofit, guarantee recovery of a particular species, or show that donations to the site are accepted through an affiliate arrangement. It is a signal about the governance, planning, management, and conservation performance of a protected or conserved area.
The IUCN resource page reported 87 Green Listings in October 2024. The same page described roughly 600 sites in the wider Green List community across more than 60 countries. Those figures are not equivalent: community participation does not mean that every site is certified. The resource page says listed sites undergo evaluation every five years.

How to check a Green List claim
- Open the official IUCN Green List site directory rather than relying on a logo in a campaign.
- Confirm the exact site name and country.
- Check whether the entry is listed, a candidate, applying, or preparing; these stages have different meanings.
- Record the status and date shown, because listings and process details can change.
- Read the available assessment information and compare it with the project’s own description of activities and funding.
How zoo and aquarium accreditation differs
AZA accreditation concerns zoological facilities. AZA says conservation is a priority for accredited members and documents field conservation work through its member resources and annual reporting. That information can help you investigate a zoo-linked project, but accreditation of the facility is not certification of every field project it supports.
In 2025, AZA reported that 235 accredited and certified related facilities reported approximately $372.4 million in conservation spending, affecting nearly 1,200 species and subspecies in 139 countries. This is an AZA community-reported figure, not an independently audited measure of the impact of one program or one donation. To evaluate a specific appeal, identify the field project, its ecological objectives, its local partners, and its own evidence of results.
| Recognition claim | What is being assessed | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| IUCN Green List | A protected or conserved area’s governance, design and planning, management, and conservation outcomes | That every organization involved is certified, that a species will recover, or that a donation is earmarked |
| AZA accreditation | A zoo or aquarium facility meeting AZA accreditation requirements | That every facility project has demonstrated field impact or that your gift funds a named activity |
| Program partner or fund recipient | A relationship or funding arrangement described by that program | Independent certification, universal reporting quality, or a guaranteed ecological outcome |
Use the STAR metric without turning it into a promise
IUCN’s Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric offers a location-specific way to assess the potential contribution of reducing threats or restoring habitat. It can help planners compare where actions may reduce extinction risk and connect a site to threatened-species priorities.
IUCN’s STAR page states that 56% of global extinction-risk reduction could be achieved by restoring habitats and that STAR incorporates data for 5,362 threatened and Near Threatened species. These are estimates and data-coverage figures presented in the metric’s context; they are not a prediction that a particular project or donation will deliver that share of risk reduction. Ask how a project uses STAR, what assumptions apply to the location, and which additional monitoring will test results.
A step-by-step way to select and support a program
- Define your scope. Decide whether you want to support a broad fund, a named habitat, or a long-term partnership. Note any geographic, species, or governance priorities that matter to you.
- Shortlist credible candidates. Gather the program’s species and habitat description, threat analysis, objectives, budget, governance information, and reporting schedule.
- Verify any label. Check the official Green List directory for a site claim or the official AZA information for a facility claim. Distinguish current accreditation or listing from application and preparation stages.
- Ask targeted questions. Request the project’s baseline, indicators, time frame, local decision-making arrangements, and explanation of how your contribution is used.
- Assess fit, not just visibility. Prefer a project whose action directly addresses a documented threat and whose monitoring can detect meaningful change. A famous organization is not automatically the best fit for every habitat.
- Give through the stated channel. Use the fund or project’s current official payment or partnership process. Save the receipt and the terms describing restrictions or reporting.
- Review updates critically. Compare reported activities with the original indicators. Look for evidence, changes in assumptions, and explanations for delays or negative results.
- Renew, change, or pause deliberately. Continue when the project shows credible progress and sound governance; ask for clarification or redirect support when reporting does not answer the agreed questions.
Comparison framework when several options look similar
Use the same questions for every candidate so that attractive branding does not replace evidence.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming a boundary equals protection
A map does not demonstrate effective management. Correct this by checking governance, enforcement, monitoring, and funding for ongoing operations.

Treating accreditation as a species-outcome guarantee
Certification evaluates a defined site or facility against a defined standard. It does not promise that one species will recover or that one donation caused a result. Evaluate the project’s own threat analysis and indicators.
Confusing an applicant with a certified site
Application, candidate, preparation, and listed stages are not interchangeable. Verify the status in the official directory and record the date you checked it.
Ignoring people who live with the habitat
Projects that exclude rights-holders can face conflict, weak compliance, or unfair distribution of costs. Look for documented participation, locally relevant governance, and attention to livelihoods and coexistence.

Using a global statistic as a personal impact claim
Figures such as the STAR estimate or an organization-wide spending total describe a broader analysis or community. They do not quantify the outcome of your individual gift. Ask for project-level evidence.
Choosing a project because the activity sounds familiar
Planting, patrols, or education can be appropriate, but only when they address the site’s documented threat. Require the ecological rationale and the expected chain of results.
What meaningful support looks like over time
Conservation is usually a sequence of decisions rather than a single transaction. A useful supporter helps maintain the cycle of assessment, planning, action, monitoring, and adaptation. That may mean providing flexible funding to a credible fund, staying with a named project long enough to evaluate outcomes, or forming a partnership that builds local capacity.
IUCN Save Our Species summarizes the collaborative principle directly: "We can only save species if we collaborate." In practice, collaboration means combining scientific assessment with regional knowledge, rights-holder participation, accountable governance, and transparent communication about both progress and failure.
