The safest way to support conservation is to evaluate the claim before the brand: identify the place, species, ecosystem or outcome; ask what would happen without the project; inspect the baseline, measurement method and independent checks; and confirm who is accountable if results do not last. Treat a certification or “nature-positive” label as a starting point for investigation, not proof.

Then match the funding route to the evidence. A donation, restricted grant, loan, investment, trust fund, blended-finance vehicle, nature credit and regulated conservation bank each carry different rights, risks, time horizons and claims. The sections below show how to test a project and choose support without overstating what your money achieves.

What greenwashing looks like in conservation

Greenwashing is not limited to an outright false statement. In conservation, it often appears when a broad image or label implies a specific environmental result that the project has not demonstrated. A forest photograph, a “nature-positive” badge or a promise to “protect biodiversity” can conceal missing information about location, baseline conditions, additionality, permanence, measurement, community rights or financial accountability.

The practical test is whether the project can connect your support to a defined result through a transparent chain of evidence. You should be able to tell:

  • what area, species, habitat or ecological function is covered;
  • what condition existed before the intervention;
  • what would probably happen without the project;
  • what activity your money enables;
  • how progress and failure are measured;
  • who independently checks the numbers; and
  • who carries the risk if funding ends or the promised result does not occur.

If those answers are replaced by slogans, treat the offer as unverified regardless of how attractive its branding appears.

Start with the exact claim

Turn a slogan into a testable statement

Rewrite the project’s headline in concrete terms. “Supports rainforest protection” should become a statement such as: a named area in a named jurisdiction will be managed for a specified period, using identified activities, with forest loss measured against a stated baseline. “Protects a threatened species” should identify the species, habitat, intervention and indicator of success.

Ask the organization to distinguish between an input, an activity and an outcome. Your payment is an input. Patrols, habitat restoration or community enterprise are activities. Fewer incursions, improved breeding success or a measured increase in intact habitat are outcomes. A project that reports only money spent or workshops held has not yet shown the environmental result implied by a stronger claim.

Ask what happens without the project

This is the additionality question. Support is additional when it enables a conservation result that would not otherwise happen, rather than paying for work already required by law, already financed or certain to occur from another source. Request the project’s counterfactual or baseline explanation and ask which assumptions could make the result look larger than it is.

Define the time period

A result can be real for one season and disappear later. Ask how long the claimed benefit is expected to last, what legal or financial arrangements protect it, and what happens after the initial funding period. A conservation promise without a durability plan is incomplete even when the first-year activity is credible.

Use this seven-part screening checklist

1. Specificity

Look for a project name, precise location and clearly described ecological outcome. The documentation should state a baseline, the measurement method, the reporting interval and the unit in which results are expressed. “A percentage of proceeds supports nature” is not specific enough to evaluate.

2. Additionality

Find out whether your contribution changes the project’s scope, timing or survival. Ask whether the work is a statutory obligation, covered by an existing budget, or already financed by another buyer. If the project cannot explain what would be different because of your support, do not treat the payment as causing the advertised benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Durability and responsibility

Check the land or resource rights, contracts, management body, reserve funds and contingency arrangements that protect the result. Ask who is responsible if a fire, policy change, funding shortfall or management failure reverses the outcome. For a multi-year claim, the answer should cover the entire claimed period, not only the next reporting date.

4. Independent evidence

Look for monitoring reports, a public registry, agency records or a credible third-party verification process. Read the methodology as well as the summary. Verification should test the project’s data and calculations; an organization’s own statement that it met its target is not the same control.

5. No double counting

For credits and offsets, each unit should be identifiable, tracked and retired or otherwise prevented from being claimed by more than one buyer. Ask where units are registered, how ownership changes are recorded, and how the project prevents the same reduction or conservation outcome from appearing in multiple claims.

6. People and rights

Identify who governs the project and whose land, livelihood or customary rights are affected. Indigenous Peoples and local communities should be involved in decisions, with rights recognized, benefits negotiated transparently and a functioning grievance process. A project that publishes ecological figures but says little about consent, tenure or benefit sharing has a material accountability gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Claims discipline

Read the exact language the organization authorizes supporters to use. A responsible project explains what a contribution does and does not mean. Be cautious when a donation is presented as fully “canceling” your impact without evidence and accounting that support that exact claim. Funding a conservation activity is not automatically equivalent to neutralizing a separate emission, habitat loss or other impact.

Scrutinize credits and offsets more strictly

Apply the mitigation hierarchy

For biodiversity offsets, the order matters: avoid damage first, minimize what cannot be avoided, restore or rehabilitate what can be restored, and consider an offset only for residual impacts. Conservation International’s offset principles identify permanence, additionality and equivalence as core requirements. An offset should not become a license to damage an ecosystem that could have been protected in the first place.

Check the accounting behind an offset claim

The Federal Trade Commission’s Environmental Claims: Summary of the Green Guides states: “Marketers should have competent and reliable scientific evidence to support carbon offset claims.” The FTC also says offset claims should use appropriate accounting, avoid selling the same reductions more than once, disclose relevant timing limitations and address whether the activity is already legally required. These are U.S. guidance materials; legal requirements differ in other jurisdictions.

Broad environmental seals can mislead when their basis is not clearly conveyed. A logo is therefore a prompt to locate the underlying methodology, registry and verification—not a substitute for them.

Test equivalence and timing

An offset must be comparable to the impact it is supposed to address under the applicable rules. Ask whether the same species, habitat, carbon pool or geographic area is covered, and whether the timing of the benefit matches the timing of the impact. A claim that combines unrelated benefits into one “nature” number needs an especially clear explanation of equivalence.

Follow the control chain from eligibility to maintenance

FHWA’s ecosystem crediting guidance describes a useful sequence: establish eligibility; set a baseline and quantify credits; verify the calculation; register the units; sell them; and continue maintenance and verification. The guidance concerns ecosystem credit strategies and is not a universal certification of every conservation donation, but the sequence exposes where weak projects tend to hide uncertainty.

  1. Eligibility: Confirm that the activity and site qualify under the relevant program and that the project has the necessary rights.
  2. Baseline and quantification: Read how the “without-project” condition is defined and how the number of credits or units is calculated.
  3. Verification: Identify the independent body, its scope and the date of the latest review.
  4. Registration: Check that units have unique identifiers and a public or auditable record.
  5. Sale and retirement: Confirm who owns a unit at each stage and how a retired unit is removed from future use.
  6. Ongoing maintenance: Look for inspections, reversal procedures, corrective actions and funding after the initial sale.

If a project can describe only the sale but not the baseline, verification or maintenance, you cannot assess the environmental claim reliably.

Check community governance and benefit sharing

Conservation International’s principles for natural climate solutions call for support for Indigenous and community rights, social and environmental safeguards, negotiated benefit sharing with host communities and governments, rigorous quality standards and third-party verification. These principles are useful questions to ask any project, while recognizing that they are Conservation International’s stated principles rather than a universal certification.

Choose a support route that fits your role

Funding mechanisms are not interchangeable. Compare the purpose of your money, your financial exposure, the project’s governance, the expected time horizon and the evidence you will receive.

Route What it is Questions to ask Main caution
Donation A contribution that normally does not create a repayment claim. Is it unrestricted or tied to a named activity? What result will be reported, and when? Do not assume a donation cancels an impact or buys a quantified offset.
Restricted grant Funding limited to agreed purposes, activities or milestones. Who sets the restrictions, how are changes approved, and what happens if milestones are missed? Restrictions can improve accountability but may reduce the implementer’s flexibility.
Loan or investment Capital provided with an expectation of repayment, return or another financial outcome. Who bears ecological and financial risk? What is independently verified, and what is the current legal status? Financial return does not prove conservation impact; losses are possible.
Trust fund A structure intended to provide longer-term financing for conservation. Who governs the fund, how are assets invested or released, and what safeguards protect the principal? Long duration does not guarantee good project selection or measurable outcomes.
Blended finance Public and private sources combined in one financing structure. Which party supplies each layer of capital, who receives concessions, and how are outcomes checked? Complexity can make responsibility and risk difficult to see.
Nature credit An emerging mechanism intended to finance measurable nature outcomes. What is the unit, baseline, verification method, registry and retirement rule? The market is evolving; a potential financing tool is not proof of project-level success.
Conservation banking In the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service description, habitat for specified species is permanently protected and managed in exchange for approved credits sold to developers offsetting impacts to those same species. Which species and geography qualify, what agency approves the credits, and how is permanent management funded? It is regulated and species- and location-specific, not the same as an unrestricted donation.

Conservation International describes these broad approaches but does not establish that one is best for every individual. Select the route whose restrictions, risk and reporting match what you are prepared to accept.

Understand emerging nature finance without overclaiming

Nature credits

Conservation International describes nature credits as a potential additional and complementary way to finance nature, with a need for high-integrity and equitable markets. The organization estimates the biodiversity conservation financing gap at US$700 billion per year; the publication year for that figure is not established on the cited page. The estimate does not mean credits alone will close the gap, and it says nothing by itself about the quality of a particular project.

Outcomes-linked bonds

Conservation International describes its Manta Impact Bond as providing upfront private capital for marine protection, community livelihoods and conservation management, with investor repayment tied to independently verified ecological and social outcomes. The page describes the project as in development. Check its current status, terms, verification arrangements and availability before treating it as active or considering an investment. The structure illustrates how repayment can be linked to outcomes; it is not a guarantee that every bond or project will perform well.

A practical decision process before you pay

  1. Write down the claim. Copy the project’s exact wording and identify whether it promises an activity, an outcome, an offset or a financial return.
  2. Locate the project. Record the site, species or ecosystem, responsible organization, legal jurisdiction and implementation partners.
  3. Request the evidence pack. Ask for the baseline, methodology, monitoring reports, verification statement, registry record and maintenance plan.
  4. Test additionality. Ask what would happen without your money and whether law or existing finance already requires or funds the activity.
  5. Inspect governance. Identify decision-makers, land or resource rights, community agreements, benefit-sharing terms and grievance channels.
  6. Match the instrument. Decide whether a flexible donation, restricted grant, repayable capital or credit purchase suits your risk and time horizon.
  7. Check the claim you may make. Obtain written guidance on whether you may say you supported a project, purchased a credit or offset an impact. Use the narrowest statement supported by the evidence.
  8. Keep records. Save the agreement, receipt, unit identifier, retirement confirmation and reporting schedule so future claims can be checked.

Red flags that justify walking away

  • A project has no named location, baseline or measurable outcome.
  • A “nature-positive” label is prominent, but the methodology and verifier are unavailable.
  • The organization promises to “fully cancel” an impact without explaining additionality, equivalence, permanence and accounting.
  • The activity appears legally required or already financed, yet the project presents all support as an additional result.
  • One reduction, restoration action or credit can be claimed by several buyers.
  • Results are reported without an independent check, registry or dated monitoring record.
  • Community consent, tenure, benefit sharing or grievance procedures are absent or treated as public-relations language.
  • The project cannot explain who pays for protection after the initial funding or who bears reversal risk.
  • An investment is solicited while the project’s status, terms or verification process remains unclear.

What to say about your support

Use language that matches the evidence. “I donated to a project that reports habitat restoration in [named location]” describes a contribution without claiming that a separate impact has been erased. A stronger statement—such as claiming a specific number of verified credits—requires a unique unit, documented accounting, retirement record and a methodology that supports the claim. If the project has not established those elements, do not upgrade a donation into an offset or guaranteed ecological outcome.

Keep the project’s limitations with the result. If permanence is conditional, verification is periodic or the market is still developing, those qualifications belong in any public description. Precision protects the project, affected communities and your own credibility.

Questions to send before committing funds

Ask for written answers to these questions, not only a presentation or marketing page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What exact result does this payment support, at what site and for what period?
  • What is the baseline, and what would happen without this project?
  • Which activities are legally required or already funded?
  • How is the result measured, who verifies it and where are reports published?
  • How are units registered, transferred and retired to prevent double counting?
  • What protects the result if funding stops, ownership changes or a reversal occurs?
  • Who holds land or resource rights, who makes decisions and how are benefits shared?
  • What grievance process is available to local and Indigenous communities?
  • What exact wording may supporters use, and what wording is prohibited?
  • If this is a loan, investment or bond, what are the repayment terms, risks and current status?

A project that answers these questions clearly is easier to compare with alternatives and easier to hold accountable. One that avoids them is asking you to trust branding in place of evidence.
