The right way to string a BLACK+DECKER weed eater depends on its model and spool design. Before opening the head, disconnect the trimmer from power or remove its battery, then check the model manual for the required line size and winding instructions. BLACK+DECKER manuals specify different line sizes and spool methods, so there is no single procedure or line gauge for every trimmer.
Before you open the trimmer head
- Make it safe: Unplug a corded trimmer or remove the battery before opening the head or touching the spool.
- Identify the spool: Determine whether your trimmer uses a single-line spool, a dual-line spool, or an auto-feed spool that you rewind with bulk line. Follow the procedure for that design and model.
- Check the manual: Use the model number to find the correct manual through BLACK+DECKER support. The manual governs the line size and type, spool fit, and any model-specific details.
BLACK+DECKER’s guidance is direct: “Use only the size and type of line recommended in your manual.”
Choose the line or replacement spool for your model
Do not choose line by brand alone. BLACK+DECKER’s product listings include both .065-inch and .080-inch examples, with compatibility tied to particular models.

How to rewind a dual-line spool
This is BLACK+DECKER’s documented method for a dual-line spool. It is not a universal procedure for every BLACK+DECKER head. The manufacturer’s instructions are available at BLACK+DECKER support.
- Unplug the trimmer or remove its battery.
- Press the housing tabs, remove the cover, and lift out the empty spool. Remove any old line.
- Feed about 2 cm of line into a slot in the spool’s upper section. Wind in the direction of the arrow, keeping the line in neat, even layers rather than crossing it.
- When the line reaches the spool recesses, cut it and park the end in the slots on one side of the spool.
- Repeat with a second length of line on the lower section, winding in the arrow’s direction. Park its end in unused slots.
- Refit the spool according to your model’s instructions. Before operating, release both line ends from their parking slots.
How to rewind bulk line on an auto-feed spool
Use this separate method only if your model has the relevant auto-feed bulk-line spool. BLACK+DECKER’s auto-feed instructions call for line of the size and type specified in the model manual.

- Disconnect power by unplugging the trimmer or removing its battery. Remove the cover and spool, then discard the old line.
- Insert about 12 mm (1/2 inch) of new line into the spool hole.
- Wind the line snugly and evenly in the direction of the arrow until it reaches the rim notches. Do not overfill the spool.
- Route the line through the spool-hub eyelet. Keep tension on the line as you place the spool in the hub, taking care not to trap the line underneath.
- Refit the cover according to the model instructions.
If the line will not feed
BLACK+DECKER describes its AFS mechanism as using centrifugal force to monitor line use and feed more as the cutting line shortens. Its troubleshooting guidance identifies poorly wound or trapped line as possible causes of feed problems.

- Disconnect power before inspecting the head.
- Check for crossed, loose, or unevenly layered line and rewind it neatly if needed.
- Check that line is not caught beneath the spool.
- If the problem continues, consult the manual for your model before replacing parts.
