You can stream shows on a 24/7 YouTube channel only if you have the rights to publicly rebroadcast them and meet YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. A streaming subscription, purchased episode, or disc does not by itself give you those rights. Before choosing software or paying for equipment, clear the content and confirm that the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID if required.

Can you stream TV shows on YouTube?

Only when you have a valid legal basis to rebroadcast them. YouTube’s Terms of Service limit use of its content to uses YouTube expressly authorizes or to uses supported by prior written permission from YouTube and, where applicable, the rights holder. They also say submitted content that includes another party’s intellectual property requires permission or another legal entitlement. YouTube Terms of Service.

Watching a show, subscribing to a streaming service, or owning a physical or digital copy does not establish permission to transmit it publicly. YouTube’s general guidance does not determine whether a particular license or show permits your planned broadcast. Check the actual agreement and the rules that apply where you operate; seek qualified legal advice if the scope is unclear.

What to clear before building the schedule

For every show or episode, establish that your rights cover the specific planned use. Ask the rights holder to confirm in writing the relevant territory, duration, platform, live transmission, monetization, and whether the stream may remain available as an archive or on demand. A right to show content live does not necessarily establish a right to keep a recording available afterward.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream, with a warning to stop using the content; if it remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright strike can also end a live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.

A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a stream can be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist, even when the content is licensed. Ask the rights holder to arrange allowlisting for your channel, then confirm it before a test stream.

Choose programming you are entitled to broadcast

Build the schedule only from material you own or are otherwise legally entitled to transmit. That may include your original programs, content licensed for the specific use, or other programming whose rights you can establish. If you cannot establish rebroadcast rights for a favorite show, do not put it in the lineup; use cleared programming instead.

Keep a record for each title: who controls the rights, what written permission or other legal basis applies, where and for how long you may broadcast, whether monetization is permitted, and whether live and archived use are covered. These records help you check the playlist against the rights granted; they do not replace confirmation from the rights holder or Content ID allowlisting where needed.

Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s live-stream starter guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person going live must be at least 16 years old. The page also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are YouTube platform limits, not recommended targets; recheck YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance before you begin because requirements can change.

  1. Check eligibility: Open YouTube Studio and review the channel’s live-stream status and any restrictions. Complete channel verification if needed.
  2. Confirm the operator meets the age requirement: YouTube’s current guidance sets the minimum at 16.
  3. Plan within the active-stream limits: Account for streams already running on the channel and streams using the same stream key.
  4. Check the rights and allowlisting: Do this before testing the broadcast; technical eligibility does not grant permission to show a program.

Set up a do-it-yourself continuous stream

YouTube supports going live with an encoder. OBS is one free software option; its official help portal links to streaming and encoding guides. YouTube and OBS do not establish a universal computer, capture card, camera, resolution, bitrate, or other hardware requirement for a 24/7 shows channel. Choose a configuration for your own source material and connection, and follow the current encoder guidance rather than assuming one setting fits every program.

  1. Prepare a cleared playlist: Include only programs covered by your documented rights. Confirm whether each item may be streamed live and whether YouTube may retain an archive.
  2. Install and configure an encoder: Use an encoder such as OBS and consult its current streaming guidance for setup. Test playback, audio, and the planned schedule with content you have permission to use.
  3. Create the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, use the live-stream setup flow to create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
  4. Connect the encoder: Enter the stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings and start the broadcast. Check the YouTube live dashboard for incoming video and audio before relying on the stream.
  5. Monitor and recover: A continuous broadcast needs an operator plan for encoder, computer, or network interruptions. Check YouTube Studio if the stream stops, and do not switch to another channel to evade an active restriction.
  6. Review the archive: Confirm that any recording or on-demand availability is within the rights you obtained. Remove or restrict an archive if your permissions do not cover it.

If YouTube interrupts or stops the stream

  • A placeholder appears or the stream is interrupted: YouTube may have matched third-party content. Stop using the flagged material and check the live dashboard and notifications. Contact the rights holder to verify the scope of permission and whether the channel is allowlisted through Content ID.
  • The broadcast ends or live access is restricted: Check YouTube Studio for copyright strikes and restrictions. YouTube identifies a copyright strike on an active stream and a match to another copyrighted live broadcast among possible reasons live-stream access may be turned off. Follow the platform’s resolution process; using another channel to stream while a restriction is active is prohibited circumvention. See YouTube’s live-stream access guidance.
  • The encoder is not sending a stable broadcast: Check the encoder’s connection, selected stream key, and local network, then verify whether YouTube Studio is receiving the stream. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a universal 24/7 reliability target or hardware setup.
  • The show is licensed but still gets flagged: Ask the rights holder to confirm that the correct channel has been allowlisted in Content ID. Do not assume that a contract alone prevents automated interruption.

Cost and planning

OBS is free to use, but software, hardware, or a cloud service cannot grant broadcast rights. Resolve rights first, then choose a workflow based on whether you can maintain and recover a continuous encoder stream. YouTube’s cited guidance does not require a specific PC, capture card, camera, or other product for this use.

For a continuous schedule, plan who will respond to interruptions, how you will verify the stream is back, and what viewers will see during an outage. Agree with the rights holder on live and archived use before enabling any recording or replay.
