To stream Netflix in 4K Ultra HD, you need an eligible Netflix plan, playback quality set to Auto or High, a stable internet connection of at least 15 Mbps, and a Netflix-supported 4K device connected to a compatible display. Every link in the chain matters: a 4K television or streaming player alone does not guarantee Netflix will play in 4K.
What you need to watch Netflix in 4K
- An Ultra HD-capable Netflix plan: Netflix requires a plan that includes Ultra HD. Names and plan benefits can change; check Netflix’s current plan options before subscribing or changing plans.
- A stable internet connection: Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of 4K playback; network congestion and other factors can affect quality. You can check your connection with Fast.com. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds.
- Playback quality set to Auto or High: Netflix’s device guidance lists either setting for Ultra HD playback. On a web browser, open Account, select the profile, then go to Playback settings and choose Auto or High. Labels can vary by app or device.
- A Netflix-supported 4K device: This may be a television with a supported Netflix app, an external streaming player, or a compatible computer. Support depends on the exact model; general 4K capability does not establish Netflix 4K support. Check Netflix’s guidance for your device, including its pages for LG TVs and streaming media players, Amazon Fire TV devices, or Google TV Streamer.
- A 4K display and compatible connection: The display should support 4K Ultra HD at 60 Hz. When using an external player, Netflix specifies an HDMI connection that supports HDCP 2.2 or later. Use the correct TV input and check the instructions for both the TV and player.
Set up Netflix for 4K playback
- Confirm your plan. Check your Netflix account’s plan details and make sure Ultra HD is included.
- Set playback quality. In a browser, go to Account → Profile → Playback settings and select Auto or High. If the path or label differs in your app, check its profile or playback settings.
- Check your connection. Test the connection and confirm it is stable and reaches Netflix’s recommended 15 Mbps or higher. A speed test is a point-in-time measurement, so it may not reflect performance during viewing.
- Check the device and display chain. Confirm that Netflix supports Ultra HD on the exact player or TV model, that the display supports 4K at 60 Hz, and—if using an external player—that it is connected to an HDCP 2.2-or-later HDMI port.
- Play a title and allow quality to adapt. Streaming quality can adjust to the connection and other conditions; meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee every moment will be delivered in 4K.
Watching Netflix in 4K on a Windows computer
A 4K monitor by itself is not enough. Netflix’s Windows guidance lists Windows 11, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or the Netflix Windows app, along with supported graphics hardware, a 4K 60 Hz screen, and an HDCP 2.2-compatible display connection. Some Windows devices may not include the HEVC codec; Netflix notes that the HEVC video extension may be needed. Check the current Netflix Windows computer requirements against your specific system.
4K resolution and HDR are separate features. Netflix’s Windows guidance treats HDR as requiring an HDR-capable display and compatible system components; plan support may also be required. A 4K setup does not automatically provide HDR.

Work through the playback chain in order rather than assuming the television’s resolution is the problem:

- Internet performance: Check that the connection is stable and meets Netflix’s 15 Mbps recommendation. If it fluctuates, try again when fewer devices are using the connection or improve the connection to the player.
- Device support: Look up the exact TV, player, or computer configuration in Netflix’s device guidance. A device that can output 4K in other apps may not support Netflix Ultra HD.
- HDMI and display settings: For an external player, confirm the cable is connected to the TV’s 4K-capable, HDCP 2.2-or-later input. Check that the player’s display resolution is set to 4K and that the television is on the correct input.
- Windows components: Check Windows version, browser or app, graphics hardware, HEVC availability, 4K 60 Hz display, and HDCP connection against Netflix’s current Windows checklist.
4K is not the same as HDR
4K describes picture resolution; HDR is a separate picture feature. To watch HDR, the display and the rest of the system must support HDR, and Netflix may require a plan that includes it. Confirm the requirements for your device rather than treating a 4K label as proof of HDR support.
