A theater can stream reliably on unstable power, but not by promising uninterrupted output. The practical approach is layered: put the streaming computer, encoder, modem and router on a correctly sized UPS so short dips and brief outages do not kill the stream; prepare an internet backup that does not fail for the same reason as the primary connection; and record the performance locally so a failed transmission does not also lose the capture. A UPS bridges only as long as its battery can carry the load. It cannot run a whole venue, and it cannot repair an internet outage upstream of the building.

Start with what each layer can and cannot cover

Before buying anything, separate the failures you are protecting against. A stream chain has three separate failure domains, and each needs its own protection:

  • Local power: brownouts, short dips and full outages at the venue. A UPS covers these for the length of its battery runtime. A generator can cover longer outages, but only if the transfer and power quality are right (see the generator section).
  • Internet path: the venue’s ISP line, its modem or ONT, and anything between the building and the platform. A UPS does not keep an ISP line working. Protecting the modem with a UPS keeps the modem powered; it does not make the line available.
  • Encoder and platform: the streaming computer, its software, and the streaming service itself. Power protection and a second network path help here, but a platform-side problem needs its own recovery steps.

A backup is only useful if it does not share the primary’s failure mode. Two internet lines that run on the same power feed and the same street cable are not two independent paths.

Step 1: Protect the smallest critical load

Put only the equipment that must stay live on battery-backed UPS outlets. For most theater streams that means:

  • WHAT YOU GET: 1* Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station, 1*AC adapter, 1* car charger cable, 1* user guide (𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝.)
  • The streaming computer or hardware encoder, with its monitor only if you need to see it during a power event.
  • The router and the modem or ONT for the primary internet line, plus the modem for any backup path that must work during an outage.
  • Audio-interface or control equipment only after you have checked its power draw and confirmed it is needed to keep the broadcast running.

Keep everything else off the battery outlets. Stage lights, house speakers, heaters, and laptops charging for other purposes all draw from the battery and shorten runtime for the equipment that matters.

Step 2: Size the UPS for watts, VA and time

APC’s UPS buying guide explains that watts measure real power, while VA reflects voltage multiplied by current. The equipment must stay within both of a UPS’s limits. APC recommends that the UPS output watt capacity be 20–25% above the total draw of the attached equipment. This is APC’s general selection guidance, not a universal standard, and it does not replace the load and runtime chart for the specific model you are considering. APC’s guide also states that runtime depends on the load, and that adding equipment reduces runtime, so back up only the most critical devices when runtime matters. Source: APC, UPS Buying Guide: Battery backup for uninterrupted power (checked 8 October 2026).

Worked sizing method

  1. List each device on the battery outlets and write down its real power draw in watts. Use the label, the manufacturer’s specification, or a measured figure from a plug-in power meter. Do not use the power supply’s maximum rating as a measured draw unless you have no other value.
  2. Add the draws together. Example for illustration only: a laptop encoder at 90 W, a router at 15 W and an ONT at 12 W give a total of 117 W.
  3. Apply APC’s 20–25% margin. In the example, 117 W × 1.20 to 1.25 is about 140–146 W, so the UPS output watt rating should be at least that figure.
  4. Check the VA rating as well. A UPS with enough watts but too few VA for the same load is still an undersized unit under APC’s guidance.
  5. Decide the bridge time you need. A 30-minute bridge is a different battery than a 3-minute controlled shutdown. Find the runtime at your actual total draw on the manufacturer’s chart. Do not estimate runtime from the battery’s nominal capacity alone.
  6. Confirm that the UPS has enough battery-backed outlets for every device on your list, and that its plug and voltage match your local supply.

What a UPS will not do

  • It will not run the whole theater. Lights, HVAC, and sound systems belong on a separate power plan.
  • A small desktop UPS is not a whole-venue solution, and frequent deep discharges shorten battery life. Plan a suitable longer-duration power arrangement if the outages are long or frequent.
  • Replacement batteries have to be available for the model you choose. Check that before purchase.

Once you have a candidate model, look for its runtime chart and confirm it has an automatic shutdown or alert feature so the computer can close cleanly when the battery is nearly empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Treat generator power as a separate question

A generator can supply power for much longer than a battery, but a generator is not automatically clean power. Power quality, voltage stability and the transfer arrangement all matter. Electronic Theatre Controls’ support article “Using DL 2 and DL 3 with a generator power” describes the risk for its own media servers and recommends isolation. It says: “You can avoid this potential problem by isolating DL.3 and DL.2 media servers from generators with a UPS or good quality power conditioner as you would do with DMX512 consoles and other front of house equipment.” Source: Electronic Theatre Controls support (checked 8 October 2026).

That warning is specific to the named ETC equipment. It does not establish that every generator is unsafe for streaming gear. The practical lesson is to ask the venue’s technical lead how the generator transfers, how it regulates voltage, and whether the stream chain can sit behind a UPS or power conditioner when it is on generator power.

Step 4: Build an internet path that fails independently

Use a primary path and a backup path that do not share a single point of failure. Options include a second wired ISP line, a cellular router or modem on a separate carrier, or a bonded connection that combines links. For each option, check:

  • Coverage: test signal strength in the exact room where the encoder sits, during the same hours as the performance.
  • Data allowance: a 6 Mbps stream uses roughly 2.7 GB per hour of data, before audio overhead and any retries. Confirm the plan covers the full performance plus rehearsal.
  • Power: the modem for each path needs its own UPS-protected outlet.
  • Failover: whether the backup switches automatically or needs a person to change the encoder’s network setting. Test which one you have.

Vimeo’s documentation describes two features that illustrate what a bonded path looks like, but they apply to Vimeo events only. Its Fail-Safe Streaming guide describes MPEG-DASH delivery intended to reduce interruptions, buffering and choppy playback from server or encoder issues, at the cost of more latency: about one minute for Fail-Safe, compared with roughly 15–20 seconds for default RTMPS. The same guide says Fail-Safe requires an Enterprise account with Events added, and it documents a backup MPEG-DASH stream option. Vimeo’s bonded network guide describes combining Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G/LTE links, with primary and standby choices. It states that bonding is available only when streaming to Vimeo with Fail-Safe Streaming and adds about one minute of latency compared with RTMP.

If your platform is YouTube, these specific features are not part of the picture. Check your encoder’s and platform’s own documentation for supported redundancy before assuming a second encoder or bonded link will take over the same stream key. A standby cellular modem can stay idle and avoid using data until the primary link fails, but only if it is configured and tested in advance. It is not independent if it depends on the same power feed as the primary.

Step 5: Record locally, so a failed transmission does not lose the performance

A local recording preserves the performance even if the stream drops. It does not keep remote viewers connected during a power failure, which is why it belongs in the plan as a second copy, not as a replacement for the stream.

In OBS Studio (the steps below use the labels in current versions; menus can shift slightly between releases):

  1. Open Settings > Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced.
  2. On the Recording tab, set the recording path to a drive with free space and a separate power source if possible. Set the recording format to MKV. MKV is written in a way that stays playable if OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly. MP4 can be left unplayable after a crash.
  3. Set the recording encoder to the same encoder as the stream, and use the same resolution and frame rate as the stream so the recording matches what viewers see.
  4. After a crash, open File > Remux Recordings to convert the MKV to MP4 for editing or upload.
  5. Start the recording before the stream, and confirm both are running in the status bar before doors.

Storage planning matters. At 6 Mbps of video, a recording takes about 2.7 GB per hour. At 9 Mbps it takes about 4 GB per hour. A two-hour performance at 6 Mbps therefore needs roughly 5.4 GB of free space, plus the audio and a safety margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Set the stream for the connection you actually have

Pick settings that the venue’s upload speed can sustain with headroom, rather than the highest quality the encoder can produce. In Settings > Stream in OBS, choose the YouTube service, use the server YouTube gives you for the event, and paste the stream key from YouTube Studio. Then set the following under Settings > Output > Streaming:

  • Rate control: CBR, which keeps the outgoing data steady and avoids sudden spikes that a shared venue line may not sustain.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube expects a regular keyframe interval for live ingest, and a consistent interval makes recovery after a dropout faster.
  • Video bitrate: within YouTube’s published recommended range for your resolution and frame rate (table below). Leave headroom: your upload speed should be well above the bitrate, because other devices in the venue also use the line.
  • Audio: AAC at 128 kbps, stereo. Audio glitches are often noticed faster than slightly softer video.
Resolution and frame rate YouTube’s recommended video bitrate (as published at the time of writing) Data per hour at the bottom of the range (approx.)
720p at 30 fps 1,500–4,000 kbps about 0.7–1.8 GB
720p at 60 fps 2,250–6,000 kbps about 1.0–2.7 GB
1080p at 30 fps 3,000–6,000 kbps about 1.35–2.7 GB
1080p at 60 fps 4,500–9,000 kbps about 2.0–4.05 GB

The bitrate and data columns come from YouTube’s recommended ranges, which can change, so confirm the current values in YouTube’s live encoder settings help before the event. The data column is simple arithmetic (kbps × 3,600 seconds per hour), before audio and protocol overhead.

Enable automatic reconnection

In OBS, turn on auto-reconnect in the advanced network options so the encoder retries after a brief drop instead of waiting for someone to press Start Streaming. The exact location of the setting depends on the OBS version, so check the Advanced section of Settings for a network or reconnect option, then test it during the rehearsal. Set a retry delay and a maximum number of retries that give the network time to recover without running indefinitely.

  • [Reliable UPS] - Never lose data or stop your devices during winter storms/blackouts! 10ms ultra-fast UPS switch protects CPAP, laptops, routers—critical for home emergencies when power cuts suddenly.

Step 7: Test the full chain before doors

  1. Run the actual encoder to the actual YouTube stream key, using the same network path the show will use. Stream for at least 15 minutes and confirm that YouTube Studio shows steady ingest.
  2. Test the backup internet path by switching to it while the stream is live, then switching back. Note how long the stream takes to recover on each path.
  3. Start the local recording and confirm the file plays back, including audio.
  4. Where it is safe and approved by the venue, simulate a brief power interruption by unplugging the UPS input from the wall, not the stream devices. Watch the UPS runtime, confirm the computer keeps streaming on battery, and confirm the UPS alarm and shutdown behavior.
  5. Check the UPS’s load and remaining runtime at the start of the show, and note the figure on the run sheet.
  6. Assign one person to watch stream status and to call the recovery plan. That person should not also be running the console or the camera.

During the show: a recovery sequence

  1. When the UPS alarms or the venue lights flicker, note the time and check whether the stream is still live in YouTube Studio.
  2. If the stream has dropped and the encoder is still running, let auto-reconnect work for its set window. If it does not recover, switch to the backup path.
  3. Send a short viewer message through the channel’s chat or the stream’s description, so viewers know the issue is being handled.
  4. If UPS runtime falls toward your shutdown threshold, save the local recording and shut the computer down cleanly rather than letting it lose power mid-write.

Common problems, causes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Stream drops during a short power dip Router, modem or encoder is on mains power rather than the UPS Move the router, modem/ONT and encoder to battery-backed outlets, then repeat the power-cut test.
UPS shows an overload warning Total draw is above the UPS’s watt or VA limit, or nonessential devices are on battery outlets Remove nonessential loads and recalculate the total using the watt and VA figures.
Runtime is far shorter than expected Battery is aged or the load is higher than estimated Check the battery’s age and self-test result, use the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your measured load, and replace the battery if needed.
Stream stutters when the generator takes over Voltage fluctuation or transfer disturbance on generator power Put the stream chain behind a UPS or good-quality power conditioner, as ETC recommends for its named media servers, and ask the venue’s electrician to check the transfer.
Backup internet does not take over Failover was never configured or tested, or the cellular signal is weak in the encoder’s room Test the switch during the rehearsal, confirm coverage at the exact position of the encoder, and document the manual switch steps.
Upload bitrate is not sustained Other devices share the venue line, or the bitrate is set above the available upload speed Lower the video bitrate, stop other uploads, and retest with the actual network.
Recording will not play after a crash The file was written as MP4 and was not finalized Use MKV for recordings, then run File > Remux Recordings to convert a recovered file.

Rights and platform rules for recordings

A performance recording can contain copyrighted music, scripts, choreography, costumes and the performers’ own rights. Before you stream a recording or upload it for replay, confirm that you have permission for each element. YouTube’s rules about reused content apply to recorded performances as well as live ones. The copyright safety checklist at streamneo.com/tools/copyright-safety-checklist is a practical starting point, but it does not replace permission from rights holders.

Or let it run in the cloud

Once the live show is over, the recording can keep a YouTube channel streaming without any equipment at the venue. StreamNeo is a cloud service made by Yorker Media that loops uploaded video on a YouTube live stream 24/7. It plays uploaded recordings. It does not carry the live feed from the theater, and it does not replace the UPS or the local recording.

  1. Upload the recording or build a playlist. Use the upload-time calculator to estimate how long the file will take to upload from the venue.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
  • Nothing has to stay on at home. The computer, the OBS install, and the venue’s connection can be switched off after the show, because the loop runs from the cloud.
  • One price, any quality up to 4K 60fps. Each slot includes one always-on stream at the quality you uploaded, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo recovers it automatically.
  • The first day is free, with no card. Each account gets one free day.
  • Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. Shorter and longer billing options are on the pricing page.
